In todays video I break down the process of growing a red oak tree from seed/acorn. The process and video is overall very similar to my white oak video, except that red oak species need stratification. Most oak species are red oak such as shurmard, willow, northern red and many more so this video can be applied to each of those species. Hope the video is interesting and helpful to anyone trying to grow red oak from acorn. Thanks again guys and see you in the next one!

I've collected almost 100 acorns and couple of them are now grown into small trees. You can check it out on my channel - how about yours? I live in europe and its not natural habitat for northern red oaks yet they grow here in parks in my town. I have also native oaks "Quercus robur"(european oak or as americans call it "english oak").

@@kristi7429 You dont have to wait so long - i put them into the fridge on 25 september and i took em out in half december. They were broken but they didnt full sprouted yet - but you could see the white acorn through broken shell and i put them little bit to the ground(basically half above the ground) and about 15 to 20 day later they were growing. So you dont have to wait so long. When the shell is broken and you can see white acorn - its ready to be planted into soil.

Last fall I collected about 800 acorns of red oak( we have some beautiful specimens in our city park), but didn't know about the water test till now. So i just buried them around the empty lots of a small forrest nearby. If only 10 % of them grow, i'll be happy. This season I will use the water method, however. Great job, greetins from Croatia!

Thanks for the very informative video about the red ash seed/acorn. It was impressive hearing you explain how to test the seed/acorn (to see if it was good) by placing it in water. Recently on a trip, I picked up just one seed/acorn from a beautiful red oak tree and carried it back home with the intention of planting it in my yard. I had no idea that so many of the seed/acorns were bad. Otherwise, I would have grabbed a lot more. Following your advise to test this seed/acorn, I placed my only seed in a bowl of water. Happily, it is a keeper! I was relieved to see my seed/acorn fall to the bottom of the bowl! Thanks again for your video.

Winters here are supposed to be very mild, but after the Texas Snowpocalypse of '21, I can never be too certain what to expect out there. I don't know the specific red oak species of my acorns (the common red oak species where I live are interfertile and they hybridize a lot), but I really hope they will do well!

I have a shumard red oak in my back yard. I picked up about 20 acorns from it and even some right off the tree. I came in and did the water test. They all sank. I left them out in the kitchen, then 2 days later I started to put them in a baggie as per your cold stratification process, and decided I’d try the water test again to make sure. This time they all floated. Why? So yesterday, I picked 15 more up. Float tested them and they sank. Today, I float test and they are all floating. Why? Are they still good to cold stratify? Thx!

I have some acorns that have sprouted, and are around 6-7 inches tall. I currently have some chicken wire over them, but I’m afraid the chicken wire is starting to interfere with the saplings. Do you think the chicken wire is necessary anymore? Or will squirrels still dig them up?
@brick31312
@brick31312 4 жыл бұрын
Edit: definitely keep the chicken wire on at all costs. I took it off for 2 days and the chipmunks went to town. They only went for the acorns themselves so if the tree is established enough and doesn’t need the acorn for energy anymore it will be fine. They will dig up the soil around the roots though. A lot of the acorns were eaten, but two months later at least 3/4 of the trees are still alive. My advice is keep the trees covered with chicken wire until they have established themselves for at least a year.

I actually have 3 growing naturally at the far border in my back yard on an unstable uphill slope that I am hoping these beautiful specimens will be a miracle for. What do I do if I don't know if it's a white oak or red oak, if I put it in the fridge for two months will White oaks grow in the first few weeks, or will they die?
@greenthinking7247

Take a picture of the leaves and properly identify the species. There's an app called picture this that is for plant identification and it is a great aid i use. general advice is red oaks have pointed lobe tips and white oaks have rounded ones.

@@greenthinking7247 That's the problem, my mom collected these acorns while her and my brother were at a tournament a few states away, and she never got any pictures. I just need to know if having all the acorns cold stratify would kill the White oaks, or if it's fine. Googling it was no help, so this is the next thing I thought of. I've tried identifying them by acorns alone, but many species look to similar.

@@grifb9741 Gotcha. No cold stratifying won't kill them if they are white oaks so you should be fine. What I would do is cold stratify most of the acorns (moist peat moss in a bag in the fridge) then i would attempt to grow a few right now in soil and see the results. White oaks germinate pretty quickly if in moist soil so you should know rather soon

@@greenthinking7247 Thanks for the info! Just one more question, when you say grow a few right away, do you mean take them out of the bag and into a pot outside of the fridge? Or would they sprout in the bag within a few weeks? (There's a lot of variety in the acorns I have) Edit: Also If anyone's interested I might put up a video when they're sprouted. maybe. If I do it would be this next spring probably

I live in Poland europe and despite the fact that natural habitat for northern red oak is America - we have those here in parks and they grow good. I would like to grow here other american oaks like "burr oak" and "white oak" but unfortunately i cant see them here. I love oaks - amazing trees. I have some videos of growing process if anyone interested. I have plenty Quercus Robur (european oak) seedlings and quercus rubra (american red oak). I would make more seedlings but i have no space in house to put them during the winter. I will plant more in spring outside be cause i have a lot of acorns from 2020 fall. I've collected at least 300 acorns.

@@arminiuszmazowszanin2670 I understand. But Canada is a different country then america. But the northern red oak is native and a huge part of the forests in eastern Canada.

Serious question, why bother potting them, is that so you can protect them? Can't you just plant them in the ground where you want them after they've sprouted over the winter?
@greenthinking7247
@greenthinking7247 3 жыл бұрын
I bother nurturing them myself so I can watch them mature into healthy trees, then decide where I would like to plant them. Plus squirrels and wildlife are incredible at digging up all kinds of tree seeds even in urban areas so the chances of it not growing are significantly higher when it is just planted in the ground. Great question my friend!
