Todays video is about how to grow silver maple trees from seed. Silver maples are a beautiful, relatively common maple tree that grows quickly. The bark has a distinct shaggy/flakey appearance and the leaves have a silver underside hence the name silver maple. Identifying this tree is relatively easy and growing it from seed is very simple. Just follow the steps in the video and you should be set!
Any questions or comments please comment below and i would be happy to answer. And as always, Think Green!

This worked perfectly for me! I planted 3 trees and all of them spouted, 2 died, but that was because one a used jet mode on the hose (not knowing you shouldn’t do that), the other one was diseased. Anyway the point is a now have a perfectly healthy 1-year old tree that’s 17 inches and still growing.

Great video and young Maple trees. My Dad collected a very young Maple sapling this size for me in 2000. We put it in a pot and it has grown really well over the years. It got to about 14 feet tall in 2016 but didn't grow much bigger than that. I decided to prune it down to 2 feet leaving one side branch and it responded nicely with 5 new branches from the trunk and is now 4 feet tall and looking more like a small leafy tree rather than a stump. My latest youtube videos show it's recovery this year. The tree also appeared a lot in my 2018/19 video updates so it's original form can be seen. All the best :)

I didn't know how I should plant them so your information is very welcome. I will need to buy some potting soil and hopefully I will have success. I am not sure how often to water them. If you like tons of pollen, helicopter seeds everywhere, a root system that will rattle your teeth when you mow over it and large branches that snap off in medium wind this is the tree for you! And let's not forget that one can be covered in Later Flies with one 40 feet away barely having any. Hornets love nesting in them, I leave them alone. Benefits are, however, they tolerate less than ideal soil conditions and provide nice shade. I'm starting new seedlings and planting them waaaay back on the property in part sun in the spring.

thank you for this informative video, I have 3 questions : 1- There are some videos who instruct to plant the seeds in the fridge between 3-5 degrees Celsius, is that important? 2- Should I wait until the spring season to implant the seeds? 3- I have different maple seeds for 2 years, red maple, silver maple and sugar maple from Canada, do you think they are still good to germinate? thank you very much!
@paull2937
@paull2937 2 жыл бұрын
In my backyard, there are hundreds of red maples that planted themselves. I took one of them and transplanted it into a cup, before they all get mowed over, because I want to see what happens to it. I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing with silver maples. So no, I don’t think planting the seeds in the fridge is necessary. I noticed those tiny red maple trees in mid April, so yes, you will need to wait until the spring season. And no, if you have kept maple seeds lying around for 2 years, I’m 99% sure they won’t germinate anymore.

I'm growing a cpl of different types of maples (not sure, something like a red maple like the Canadian flag but looks reddish deep pink in fall and another type I don't know) but my seedlings just look a bit sick. some look ok, some the leaves are curling in a little bit, others are turning white or yellow at the tips. I'm keeping the soil moist not wet, they're in the shade, and protected from any strong wind, so I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong... I'm also growing liquid ambers, and some of them are fine, and others just plain die, or die as they try to come up... any ideas?

Tribe-Racing thanks for replying :) they're under shelter, so it's only what I give them. I moved them so they got less wind and sun and they seem to be doing better. but some still just die. esp the liquid ambers. we've had weird weather flucuating quite a lot. we had one day of sudden 38c with hot winds and I lost two maples (we almost lost ppl too it was so sudden! 😅) mum said I wasn't watering enough, so I'm watering more, they look better, but not amazing.

Please do a video on how to eradicate silver maple. A trash tree. Absolutely a terrible tree. New sticks falling on the yard every day. A wind storm almost guaranteed to cause branches to break/split off the tree. Avoid these mistakes of nature. Builders love to plant these in your yard when they build new homes. They're cheap, fast growing, have shallow roots, break easily, clutter up the neighborhood every year with seeds (helicopters), and volunteer trees in your flower beds, around bushes, and in your yard, (and all of your neighbors yards.

Silver maple trees are a junk tree, if they weren’t trees we would call them weeds. And there is nothing to growing them - their samaras will land on anything and if the landing area resembles soil the samara will sprout a tree. And in spring and summer you can just take a live cutting from a silver maple tree and stick it into the ground doing nothing special to it, and it will take root. If your area is getting infested by the spotted lantern fly, you don’t want a silver maple - the SLF is attracted to them by over an order of magnitude more than a red maple. I would question the motivation behind anybody promoting the planting of silver maple trees.
