Though it is well into the late fall, many "hard" maples are still holding onto their 'winged key' seeds or 'samara's'. We will be identifying some of the varieties of maples, collecting seeds, and how to store and save seeds for the early spring!
In future episodes we will look at a closer and more specific look into how to properly store and sow seeds and how to germinate and start growing Maple trees into seedlings.
Also coming up this season: Pine Cones, Birch Tree Seeds and Maple Tree Seed collections and many more!~

Your the Bob Ross of trees!! I will say I watched a video or two awhile back & not only was I blown away with the information in it but I now have a bag full of sprouting oak trees! I am curious on how to exactly identify maples by their bark?? I have a lot of trees very close together where I hunt & its hard to tell the difference between them. I recently went to the Wv pumpkin festival & it got me interested in maple & hickory syrup & I thought about trying it myself but I don't want to kill of the tree by doing so or any trees that I might mistake for maples. Side note, since Ive watched a few videos in the past hour, now my wife wants to watch more & is thinking on going out in the woods with me since she now knows what trees shes looking at so for that I thank you BRT(Bob Ross of Trees :)

Chem istry LOL BRT, must say I LOVE that. Also must say, maybe the most admired comment I have received in a while. I loved Bob Ross (still do) and am happy to hear your interest in the channel. I am very happy to hear you have had success with oaks trees, as an arborist and tree lover, those trees are high on my list of favourites, though I do love them all! In regards to the tree ID by bark, it is a tough task even by the most avid tree lovers. When seeking out trees in the winter (no leaves, seeds or flowers) to identify with, the bark, tree form and location can tell you a lot. There are many good books and websites that can help with this, and taking your own photos and making notes also is a great tool for 'keying' trees. Maples have smooth bark as juveniles and can become quite rough, similar to some evergreens at older ages. Pictures can be a good reference, but comparing from winter to summer once leaves sprout is often best with the wide range of hybrids that can be found in some areas. Please feel free to contact me privately if you have other questions,a s I would love to help you out further...thanks for watching and connecting..JJ

I will just like to tell that this video is very informative. I stay in Malaysia which is a very sunny n hot tropical country. We also get enough of rain. Im just wondering that can we plant these maple trees in our country. Eventhough, i had never seen even one maple tree in my country. But i still hope that one day i can plant my owm maple at somewhere in my country. I often get jealous of other countries because they have many maple trees but here i dont even have one. Three years ago i went to Australia, Perth where i saw a lot of maple trees. So i brought back two maple leaves as my remembrance. Im still glad for having at least a maple leaf till now. But it's dry now. And i made a frame for it and hanged it in my room hoping and wandering that one day i can plant my own maple tree. Tqvm for this very interesting video n letting me to share my experience about the maple leaf. Lastly, I have a really big addiction in this maple trees.

Great voice ... easy to listen to. I came here trying to identify a tree I only saw from a distance. It appeared to have a black and white bark and have a canopy that could have been from a maple. I will need to pull over and get close to that tree and see if it's as pretty as it looked from a distance.

It is incredible that some of the Soft Maples will not blossom or show seeds for 30 years! I am glad that there are many that will share seeds much earlier in their life! Sugar maples sometimes take up to 40 years before being able to tap! Allowing for the tree to be about 12 inches in diameter. You can then tap away at that point, with up to 3 taps in each, using the tree for over 100 of years, or trees life! I may have to include that info in my next video, thank you! Thanks for watching!

A mature maple tree will produce thousands of seeds every Year in May dropping like helicopters. They grow so fast that if you ignore them for three months, they are difficult to pull out of the ground. If you step on it on your lawn they sprout like mushrooms! I have to meticulously pick them up to prevent them from ruining my lawn. I can collect about 2 garbage bags each year, maybe more because they are being blown by the winds. It also cause clogging of my roof gutters.

Hey, I have some great maple ideas that will not only survive, but thrive in Florida! The Red Maple and Silver Maple will do well, in well drained soil in northern areas of Florida. There is also a Florida Maple, (Acer Floridanum), which is known as the Florida Sugar Maple. It does well in a lot of soil conditions, and is a great shade tree! These should give you some great fall color while in Florida! Feel free to PM me for more specific details!

Hi Jeremiah, Great video. Very informative and personal. You have a very calming voice. haha In your research have you found best soil, weather, moisture, temperature etc for growing Maple? I am going to attempt to grow a Maple Bonsai. I live in Alberta now and really miss Ontario's colours. We can not seem to grow Maple here. But I am thinking if I control the environment inside, I may just pull it off. P.S. Wanna send me some Maple seeds? Lol
@JeremiahJohnson84
@JeremiahJohnson84 7 жыл бұрын
Great idea Joda...I know you can make this happen... When I moved from Ontario to Vancouver, there was a huge learning curve in terms of the new trees, soil conditions and temperatures. The best advice I can give, is try and match the existing conditions that the existing trees were growing in. Meaning, if you're able to grow the new seeds into a soil that is similar to the area that tree was growing in ie- sandy soil/ loamy/ dry or moist. PM me and I will be able to send you some seeds in the coming month. JJ

I planted a young red rocket maple last Fall. In early May it produced beautiful red flowery seeds (?) which then fell off and now there is nothing. There are some red nodules but no leaves and it is now June 1st in Alberta. The tree is green if you cut a branch so apparently not dead. When will this tree which is now about 8 ft tall put out leaves? Thanks so much.

Wow- beautiful! To be honest, I didn't know that tree even existed...I think you should contact me Private message as I will need to look into this tree. Please follow up with PM...thanks for watching...JJ84

hi, i have a sugar male (i believe) that naturally will have seeds fall and begin to grow on there own. i live in a zone 8 and i dont know what to do with them. i want them to be moveable so what i was thinking is i dig them up with as much of the root as possible, then i put them in a solo cup with holes in the bottom and leave them where i dug them up and put the same soil that it began growing in. Can you just tell me if this a good idea and what conditions it truly should be in? jz

Thanks for the question. You would have to check the growing moisture zones where you live and then check to see which maples would be best suited for your climate and winters. Hi John thanks for the comment. Sounds like it could be a few diseases but either way, its a sign the tree is not doing to well. It is probably either Anthracnose, Fungal Leaf spot or Sooty Mold. They all produce these black spots. Best solution: Remove affected leaves on ground from around tree to reduce spreading or affecting pest creating hosts. Then trim and prune back any dead or heavily affected branches. As Sooty mold is spread by aphids and scale insects, and the others are fungal diseases I would recommend spraying a insecticide and fungicide. Check out GrowOrganica.com the organic kelp extract spray will help nicely as a fungicide. Take care of the tree this spring and possibly identify the exact cause and It should come back! Good luck, let me know if I can help out more!
