Although using a router gives a nice finished look especially for rounded hinges, I like Tommy's other method in another video when he uses what he called a "gauge block." It leaves less room for hinge placement error.

At the end, “now all we have to do is drill for the hardware” IF you have a jig, to drill the door face, the side, and the jam for the strike plate.

adjusting a frame is a lot more work than cutting a door, multiple connecting pieces vs one piece

That's not true at all. Same as your Quote is a lie. Title/video is about how to hang a door not drill for hardware. And since you have pre drilled doors a lot.

Simple enough but why not leave 1/4" or possibly more for an undercut? Airflow,but also if they decide to do carpet in the future it won't swing correctly. Ask me how I know 😂

When we bought our house, we had carpet in all the bedrooms and hallway. We removed the carpet and installed hardwood floors, now the doors have a big gap at the bottom. Light and sound travel across the hallway among the bedrooms. It is annoying. We probably need to install door sweeps to fix the issues.

I am curious as to why there are two hinges in the video, rather than three hinges? How is it determined how many hinges are needed?

Hollow doors can handle 2 hinges, solid doors three..

I don’t quite follow Tommy on the height. He didn’t level it, in fact that one shim on the floor means it could be sitting wrong, yes?

By the looks of things, the door frame's header wasn't level. So instead of redoing the entire frame to level it, just make it look level by trimming the difference off the door.

@@stevejensen3471 It’s not that I think Tommy is wrong. When I find myself thinking Tommy is wrong I go lay down until I get over it. There’s just something missing in the video which confuses me.

@@Nill757 Love Tommy for sure but this is a bad demonstration. The shim (or it's thickness) on the floor wasn't even mentioned nor was the fact that two shims of the same thickness should be placed on the floor so the bottom of the door tracks the slope of the floor. You then shim the door level in the jamb to get the correct top rail alignment before you measure for the scribe as only then can you get an accurate top scribe. Then after cutting the top scribe, Tommy suddenly lifts the door so there's an 1/8-inch gap at the top without mentioning anything about the size of the gap or slope at the bottom! There must have been a sizable gap at the bottom of that door. As far as the hinge mortises on the door, call me old fashioned but I've always scribed the hinge outline with my uknife, deepened the grooves with my chisel, and then used my hand router plane to cut the exact depth of the mortise. I also use a vix bit to drill the hinge holes so they are exactly centered! Been hanging doors for 40 years.

@@stevejensen3471 Yes I expect a detailed demo of hanging a door would be more than TOH videos would be allowed. I think the total gap dimension top and bottom is defined by the half inch he measures on the top w the door on the floor (almost). Then, its dealers choice how spread the half inch between top and bottom. That shim down at bottom I imagine is to square the the door to the jam as you say, w a slightly not level floor. There’s another video where he goes through that IIrc. No doubt those in the trade many years have seen several ways to cut hinge mortises. Tommy likes his routers, uses them every chance (maybe pushed to sell them on air dunno). Anyway Tommy’s way works too as that door closes and. swings on the money.
