Want to learn how to hit driver straight? I bet you do. For me driver is the most important club in the bag as it sets you up for easier approach shots. Keep hitting lots of fairways and you dramatically lower your scores.
The great majority of average golfers don't know how to hit driver straight. Typically, they come over the top. Depending on the face relative to the path they hit pulls, pull hooks and pull slices. If the face is severely open you may even hit push slices.
So in order to hit your driver straight you need to swing on the right path. This path is slightly from the inside. This inside out path is directly related to your body tilt at impact. If you tilt forward you will send the club over the top. If you tilt back you will attack from the inside which is want we want.
This tip shows you numerous ways to get this inside out swing path so please understand what is happening then start to try some of these drills in practice swings and at the range. If you get this backwards tilt you will be well on your way to learning how to hit driver straight.

Thanks so much. I have been keeping it simple since 1991. I know what people can handle and how much they practice (not much). Give them complicated moves etc. and they will never get it. If it's simple people can understand what they need to do and actually try it. If they see results quickly they will keep doing it. As they get excited they will want to learn more and want to practice more etc. Complicated is never going to work. I learned this a long time ago when I was learning the swing. The day I made it simple was the day I got it.

Paul, I went back to the basics and stopped fixating on looking behind the ball so much. That was causing me to stay way behind and slide, resulting in that duck hook we discussed. Instead, I now remind myself to keep a little tilt, okay to look behind the ball, but just to get through the shot and not kill it. As soon as I started doing that, my drives went back to normal. I'm pounding the living heck out of the ball effortlessly. Easy 280-300 and that's not even at full capacity.

I've never written a testimonial for any product, or have written responses to any videos on KZfaq, but here I go. I have been thinking over and over again on what to say to help persuade people that Paul Wilson is the best golf teacher there is. But all I can really say, is to just have "faith". I remember years ago when I watched all other KZfaq golf lessons, and trying what I learned at the driving range - but they all seemed very difficult to follow (for example, some will tell you to "squat" in your downswing. What does that mean exactly? Am I squatting down 1 inch? 2 inches? How can I get that exact figure every time?). I also remember the day I almost hit 200 golf balls at the range, and hit every single ball thin. Almost gave up the game back then. Then I came across Paul Wilson on KZfaq. Desperate to give a change, I just tried what Paul told me to do (I began with the "downswing triggers"). And for the first time in many weeks, I noticed that I was at least hitting the ball solid repeatedly. I went back home and saw every video Paul had - and soon, I noticed people coming up to me at driving ranges asking whether I had played varsity golf as a highschooler, because I had such a good looking swing. I recently learned about the CoachLink app, which lets me show Paul my swing in real time, and for Paul to give me tips. I tried it for the first time today, a little dubious as to whether he could clearly see my swing and give me an accurate diagnosis. The first thing Paul asked for me to fix was my grip. As everyone knows, changing grips is not easy - it can lead to bad shots for a while. However, I had faith - Paul's videos had told me that changing swings can initially result in bad shots, but that it would be important to just focus on that change. I hit around 100 balls just trying to get adjusted to the grip. I was quite desperate, as I had a pretty important golf round with my friends later in the afternoon. I have to admit, even after 100 balls, the grip still felt out of place. But I stuck to it, even in the afternoon when playing with my friends. I thought to myself - hey, I'll just proceed with a smooth swing, not caring about the score. The result? What can I say - I hit the balls straighter than before, and surprisingly, much, much longer than before even with a slower swing (I was looking at a 175 yard par 3, and hit a six iron - and hit it over the green by another 15 yards. By the way, I'm a short Asian). I really hope that everyone can just invest a day or two into Paul's videos. I think the most interesting thing about golf is that, unlike other sports, mere "practice" does not in any way make you better. You can hit 200 golf balls a day for five months, and not improve even the slightest (believe me, this is from my own experience). This is due to the fact that golf is really counter-intuitive. However, with the understanding of the fundamentals, unbelievable improvement can come within a matter of days. And Paul Wilson's videos make all the complicated theories that other teachers preach into less than 5 major lessons (right finish position, backswing coil, downswing trigger, grip and head position). Most of us have played golf for years, but without much improvement. Perhaps we should all now just invest a couple of days, perhaps three to Paul's lessons? What can we lose? Just have faith. Thank you Paul for making all my days of playing golf not be a massive waste (fyi, I'm still working on the other issues you spotted for me today. Talk to you in a month).

Hi Paul - well, it is the end of the month and I went to the practice range! Background: I have been doing 100 swings of the body swing 6 days a week for four weeks (I didn't count the various other drills you recommend we do daily in those 100 swings, but I have been doing them). So I figure that is 2,400 swings. I absolutely had a blast at the range - and I didn't "hit" a thing - somehow the range balls would occasionally get in the path of my swing, though! My sand wedge went a consistent 90 yards (straight) and my 7 iron went a consistent 125 yards (straight as a Nevada highway). When I picked up my driver is where my trouble began - the first shots were the most perfect slices you have ever seen - a good 75 yards to the right. I then did what you suggest and turned the club over in my swing and hit beautiful hooks. However, when I tried to straighten them out, I went back to the slice. So, I did another thing you suggested and I slowed my swing down - then my driver was consistently going 200 yards straight as an arrow. So, I guess my timing of my upper body is not in sync with my lower body and I have more work to do! Which I will do because I am committed to getting a better swing. I walked down the area where the practice tee areas are so I could line up my range finder with where my slices were landing and they were out there about 250 yards, so I know I have potential - I just need to get there. Oh, and I did purchase an annual subscription to your Ignition Golf so I have that to help me as well!

@@paulwilsongolf Hi Paul - you weren't kidding, there are tons of tips in the Ignition Golf series! So, based on your wise "don't get off track" suggestion, I need your advice. I have been practicing the body swing at home 6 days a week, 100 swings/day for 2 1/2 months now. I found your incredible tips on the short game of golf in the ignition series. I want to go play one round of golf before the snow starts flying - the golf course officially closes September 30. That being the case, what is the best routine for short game practice shots as well as the body swing? Should I just alternate short game one day and body swing the next?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
I would go play as much as you want now. First round or two I would play by yourself. 3 extra balls in your pocket. This is in The Body Swing. Swing no more than 50% speed doing the full swing. Don't keep score. Hit shots and drop another if you hit a bad one. Get used to using the new swing. As you do then go up a little until you are doing it at top speed. It's all about getting used to it. Most people go out there and just try to hammer it as hard as they can so they just keep doing their old swing. If you are learning a new swing then you need to do the new swing.

Hi Paul. Great tip. For irons, assuming you had the correct ball position in the stance, would trying to hit up work? It seems to me that the concept of hitting down for irons is wrong and the body tilt causes the divots you get with the shorter clubs. Thanks!

You can do it! You need to go out by yourself with 3 golf balls in your pocket. You don't keep score. You swing at 50%. Drop balls and hit extra shots. It is about actually trying something new when you play. If you keep doing your old swing when do you ever change. With driver you pick a close target a few yards away or way way way in the distance that you cannot possibly reach. You cannot pick a fairway bunker at 250. This is a distance thought. So with new targets your thought to hit the fairway not hit it 250 down the fairway. Keep doing this by yourself until you get used to it. Right now if you play with others you will think distance and you will hit some bad shots. So try my way and get make the switch.

So you need to do my roll over drill with driver. Get ever ball hooking. You do this by rolling from the top. Forget direction. All you care about is spin. If every ball has hook spin you know what the ball is going to do before you do it. This would be half right. Once you can hook about 10 in a row you switch to firing your body to straighten it out (direction). The answers are right here. If you are pulling you are starting your arms first. This leans your body forward and you send it over the top. Test it. Tee up a 7 iron. Hit some shots tilting your spine left then tilt right and see who it changes the direction (not spin) of your shots. So if you tilt left and the ball starts left this would tell you that you need to tilt more right. That doesn't tell me anything. Where is it going? You are most likely trying to work on too many things never mastering anything. At least get the wrists working. Roll it from the top on purpose. Get every ball hooking. Then you know where the ball is going to go before you hit it. At this point you start switching to legs and hips to straighten it out. Watch your ball and it will tell you exactly what to do.

How are you going to put the club on the ball. Plus, you will end up hitting the ground behind the ball with too much weight on the back foot. You get the tilt through the shift. Like hitting the accelerator on a car. Fire the lower and upper god back. So don't tilt excessively.
