I'm kind of confused as to what I should do with my left hand. I've watched various videos on holding the violin and it seems like the palm of my hand shouldn't be touching the neck because nobody else's does, but mine does. I can't really clamp it between my chin and shoulder for very long so my left arm is basically the only thing holding it up. I don't really know if this is a problem or not.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 жыл бұрын
yes, thats right, the palm of your hand should NOT be touching the neck. You should hold the neck between your thumb and side of the index finger and the left arm also hold the weight of the violin up whilst playing. Thats how 'I' do it anyway - im sure others are ever so slightly different....

YES! A significant amount! Im assuming you have a student quality violin here, but if you thinking about spending $14 on D'Addarios strings, I wouldn't bother and just keep your own strings the violin came with. There will be no difference and you will have wasted $14. If you get the dominants, you will (or should) hear a much improved tone and a smoother ride so to speak and the bow will glide.

Hello Alison, I am very much enjoying your videos. I was watching a video of Hilary Hahn playing Mozart Violin Concerto 3 she doesn't appear to be holding the neck at all. Again, a very good video - it reminds me of my first piano and classical guitar lessons when I was told all the things you do NOT do. It somehow stuck with me all my life and I never accustomed any bad habits on either instrument. I sometimes cringe when I see professional guitar players that use their thumb for chords... How would I place my thumb correctly on a viola neck? AT the centre back and parallel to the strings?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

+George Tempest i would have thought its the same as the violin - but I have never played the viola and I dont like to comment or advise on instruments I have not played as it would be very unprofessional of me to do so. Best to ask a viola player - sorry, but I dont want to mis-advise you.

well i tried around quite a bit and just something i dont understand: if i hold the violin at 10 o clock the most comfortable way for me to hold it is by facing straight forward (12 o clock) cause well usually thats how we stand around 95% of the time right? now looking to the left or right doesnt hurt instantly but if i imagine professionals practicing 4-7 hours a day... doesnt it start to hurt? only point of reference is going on long car rides as a child (~5 hours to the closest relatives) looking out the window... super stiff neck at the end of it ... so i can hold the violin that way no problem but doesnt that lead to pain/injury? (i remember hearing someone say/reading somehere that facing straight forward basically only placing the jaw on the chin rest is the right way to go) just want to know cause if i try to play facing straight my bow is just impossible to control up down crooked everything

How come I always see these videos late. Have been wondering how to correct the way my daughter held the violin. In spite of reminding her about holding the violin more towards the shoulder, it always came front. I was getting frustrated thinking how to correct it. From your video I understand, it is all about the placement of the music stand. Thanks Alison. I was searching on something else. Do you have a Violin tutorial on Shift's. My daughter is stuck in Exercise in Shifting & Study in First and Third positions (Open String Shifts)- This is in Eta Cohen Violin Method- Book 3. Is there any Lessons or book written by you in Shifts. If so please let me know. Based on your video on purchase of Piano, Got my daughter the Yamaha 115DP and did purchase your first book on Piano. Hello Alison. I just started playing the violin, and I use a shoulder rest, I was wondering if it is alright / desirable for the violin to tilt a bit down and to the right, so that the bridge is not completely parallel to the floor. I cannot hold the violin comfortably without it tilting in this manner.

Hey Allison, I have a question that may be hard to answer without seeing me in person, but it's worth a shot.. I can not for the life of me seem to get a good grip on the violin with my chin and shoulder.. Whenever I think I've got it, I test the fingerboard, and without gripping the neck, fingering makes the edge of chin rest dig so hard into my jaw bone that it's actually immensely painful. (I have a fatty chin so things that dig in tend to be more intense than usual.) I've adjusted my position to every variation I could without it being outright incorrect, and in most of them, the violin keeps wanting to slide forward unless I grip with my chin so hard to the point of possible bruising! (And even then it barely makes a difference.) I can't even practice, it hurts so much! Do you have any ideas about what I might be doing wrong? Could it be the chin rest? Do they make chin rests that are more flat and without that high edge?
@kimransingh6222
@kimransingh6222 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, in one of Alison's videos, she mentions the mulko chin rest. It's the one she uses and it is so much better as it has a very thin edge and doesn't dig in at all. It is very comfortable. Also if you find that your violin is slipping and you want to fill that gap, maybe consider a shoulder rest. But I really do recommend that mulko chin rest.

Thanks for the vid! In the 6 years after my 8 years of violin lessons I taught myself how to hold the violin in a totally wrong way; I let the violin rest on my wrist. This feels like the only natural way to hold it for me because I'm so used to it and it makes a vibrato very easy (for me). If I hold it like I should, my hand feels like it's frozen and all the flexibility is gone in an instant. Vibrato feels impossible. Any tips? :(
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 7 жыл бұрын
If you continue holding the violin with the wrist - its the reason you cant do vibrato and wont be able to do it properly. It also means you wont progress as you will never be able to change positions easily. I would recommend you keep your wrist down and learn that way - you will soon find things becoming much easier.

Kieran Hudspith Nothing on my index finger touches the violin except the very tip of the finger. Perhaps too much of your finger is touching the neck, preventing movement - without seeing you, I can only guess at that though.

The Online Piano and Violin Tutor That is the problem I have so I tried holding the violin neck more with the pad of my thumb. While it fixed the vibrato I find I cant play as good so im quite confused about what I should do

Nina Rochester Gai, without seeing you, I cant really say much as I dont know whats going on and I could end up advising you wrongly with disastrous effects. I can only say, that you need to find a middle ground. Vibrato etc take months to develop, so if you have just moved your index finger and still cant get it, you need to give it a month or so as moving even an eighth of a millimetre can take weeks to get used too.

I can't figure out how or where to put the violin on my shoulder, everything i try makes the violin tip downward at an angle or it's so far left I can't reach it and I don't know what to do, please somebody helppp

You could try using a shoulder rest or a cloth under the violin and make sure you are holding it in the correct position and your left arm is not holding it too low.

My thumb tends to slip to the side of the neck of the violin, especially when I play on the G string. I always thought it went under the neck, but when I do that, it's harder to play the G string. What do I do then?

You mean you thumb slips up higher poking above the finger board, or lower disappearing under the neck??
@ambarrivera6049

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. It just sits on the side, but it's not really higher than the fingerboard, and it's not lower than the neck. I'm not sure where to place it???

Im sorry - I dont follow you then? If you say its not going higher or lower, whats the problem?
@ambarrivera6049

Well, I was wondering wether it had to be directly under the neck or to the side. I'm really sorry I can't be more specific, but thanks for helping anyway.

Is it normal to get the back of my neck tired from holding the violin? and a bit of.. uncomfortability with the chinrest and my chin?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 жыл бұрын
There will be some discomfort but there should be no pain. If there is actual pain, you need to stop and see a doctor. It should feel uncomfortable in a way that its something new you are getting used to. You could try a thinner chinrest or a shoulder rest or use a cloth under the violin etc etc. i cant tell you what is comfortable - only you can do that but you will have to experiment what what is comfortable for you and what is not.

You may need to try using a shoulder rest.

The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Okay, I do believe it would make things easier but I want to learn how to balance the violin without the need of a shoulder rest for one main reason, my budget. It may be the chin rest, it digs into me like a rock. Thank you for responding :D
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

You could try using a cloth or sponge attached with an elastic band on the bottom - you just need to experiment. I used a velvet (dont ask me why velvet - perhaps I was a little princess about it back then haha) piece of material when I was transitioning from using a shoulder rest to nothing. It just made things a little more comfortable whilst I got used to no shoulder rest.

I think the chin-rest on my violin is actually misshapen. It has a perculiarly massive bulge sticking out to the side that doesn't actually allow my chin to touch it properly, let alone rest on it.

Well you are very knowledgeable and very nice but yo be honest you talk to much. This video is about how to hold the violin and NOT about what some people think about how you teach or what your students say and do. Or selling a shoulder rest. So please stick to the subject. And that is How to Hold the Violin😊
