What is Mobility? And how does it affect our ability to perform skills such as the L-sit?
Today we dig into exactly this as well as the exact exercises I used to improve my mobility for the L-sit.

Such a good video, love how much detail you go into! I am trying to work on my flexibility as currently sitting in an L-Shape with my back straight feels like a stretch. Is this an issue I am having with my hamstrings or hip flexors? When I'm doing a hamstring stretch I can go down further and reach my ankles.

This is actually such a great question that I am going to pin it. To test this, you can do two things: Test 1 1. Do what I did at 1:19 but with your back aganst a wall. Try to get to 90°. Test 2 1. stand up straight, and face forward, sidways in to a mirror 2. Get a friend to hold a stick against your back so that the stick goes from the back of your head to your bum line (I tried to find another way to articulate that =S ) 3. slowly bend forward but stop when your back begins to round against the stick. If in either of these tests, you struggle to get to 90° (an L-shape), you'll need to work on your 'Pike flexibility' - I've got a video on how to improve pike flexibility on my channel too 👌🏿

Thanks a lot for this video, that exercise really left my quads burning! I’ve always blamed my hamstring flexibility despite being able to sit perfectly but recently my flexibility has really improved and I can touch the ground with flat palms however I still wasn’t able to do a L sit or even get my legs straight while hanging so this video makes a lot of sense.
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! And yeah getting palms to the floor is a HUGE achievement! Not sure how accurate it is but general consensus is that more than half of adults can't touch their toes. So you're already more mobile than most! 💪🏿

Excellent discussion of how mobility differs from flexibility. I'm making progress on flexibility (touching dem toes) but still struggle with activation at the extremes of the RoM for some movements. Very good assessment and solution!

Glad you liked it, and I hope this helps. I know what you mean, active range passive range can be entirely different things, let alone building strength in those areas too!

this is so true. I had been stretching my hamstrings wrong for ages, and only realised when I did my back in. turns out I had been weakening my lower back and needed to focus more on hip mobility. my chiropractor gave me exercises that really helped me, but my time out injured has seriously limited how much I can develop

Wow, seriously what an amazing video. More people NEED this information. And to answer your question I started doing exercises to strengthen my hip flexors. I started with lying leg raises and then sitted leg raises. I went from only being able to get into the L sit through a tuck position to being able to raise my legs off the ground after only a few weeks. I hadn't really thought of it in terms of mobility I was simply trying to strengthen my hip flexors, now I understand how I did it. Thanks mate.
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 3 жыл бұрын
You're really welcome, Cesar - glad you liked it. And you're right, the line between mobility work and strength work get blurred the more we train 'correctly' - i.e. building global strength in a way that will have long term benefits.

Thank you so much for addressing those who have issues with hip flexors! The one problem is that I can’t even L-sit on the floor without my back wanting to lean backwards. I tried this exercise and the maximum I could do was hold my back straight while my legs were as well, but I couldn’t lift them off the floor without bending my back at all. Is there a fix for this?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is a big problem, and highlights the difference that having good passive flexibility has on your ability to be active in that same range. My advice is to work on your flexibility as a focus first then get strong in that new range of motion. Here is how I improved my own pike flexibility: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j790gc9h16eae6c.html 👊🏿

@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad it helped you out! Your cramp will likely be an issue to do with lack of familiarity and lack of strength at that end-range. Sucks as it sounds, you just have to push through cramp. Try the exercises mentioned here regularly and the cramp should subside

What do you think is the issue causing me to not be able to extend my leg flat during the exercise at 3:30 ? I doubt it is the strenght because my legs lift me everyday and I am fit. I can't make an angle greater than 130° though. Even if I am sitting, extend my leg on the ground and try to lift it with the help of my hand while keeping it straight. If I want to break the 80°(relqtive to a vertical axis) I have to bend the knee.

How far out should you sit for a seated kick? I find the kicks easier when I sit with my thighs fully supported as opposed to when only my butt is supported.

@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd 2 жыл бұрын
It kinda trains the whole core, but the L-sit alone, won't build defined blocky abs. think of it more of a conditioning exercise that will allow you to develop a stronger core so that you can work on more advanced ab exercises that will THEN lead to blockier abs =]
