How to Install a Dryer Vent Through a Brick Wall

In this video, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich show you how to install a dryer vent through a brick wall. Installing a dryer vent through a brick wall can seem to be a difficult challenge, but in this video we'll show how we installed a dryer vent from a basement laundry room through a crawl space and out an exterior brick wall.
Proper dryer venting using semi-rigid ducting provides an optimum smooth walled exit for dryer venting. In many areas of the U.S., the corrugated flexible ducting is no longer allowed. Thousands of fires are caused by lint every year. So the material for the ducting matters.
Assembling the dryer vent ducting is done in a way to minimize the number and degree of turns so that the exhaust has the most direct path out of the house. There is a dryer vent installation code which addresses long runs and how many turns are allowable. A DIY'er should make themselves familiar with the dryer venting codes.
The tools needed for this job include metal shears, foil tape, and a saw and drill.

Would this be similar for installing a bathroom vent? Also did you cut the original hole by chiseling or with a drill?

don't forget to tape those long snap joints.....also, depending on where you live, there may be a requirement for the height of the vent hood from the ground due to snow accumulation.

Appareciate the vid sir.. It must be a different type of red brick that my home is built with. I was unable to chisel away and ended up using a bosch carbide hole saw on it.

Nice video. Seems like an underpowered drill to use for that big of a hole saw. Was it burning up smoking after?

Hello Random Shiz, no, this is a Dewalt cordless drill and it is awesome! It has plenty of power. The only issue is that the batteries wear down after a while. But we have at least 5 Dewalt cordless tools, so that means we have plenty of batteries, which we continually recharge all day and we never run out of power. Thanks for the comment!

Wouldn't a lint trap just above the dryer be helpful with fewer worries about lint collecting in the pipes?

Hey Chef, Thanks for making the point. Dryers have lint traps too. The problem is likely that people are neglecting cleaning them out as they should. Big fire risk then.Thanks for watching.

A vertical dryer vent is not a good choice. It may have been your only choice but it will present problems down the road. Good video.

Hey Michael, This is a basement laundry room so there was no choice. But that being said, IF ( and admittedly that may be a big ‘if’ for some folks ) the vent gets periodic cleaning, then the homeowner should be fine. Like most things in life, proper care is key. Thx for the view and input!

I think that run is too long. Typically a dryer will require an inline fan to assist In proper venting when your runs exceed 10 feet. But, if it is working.... nice install

This is not an install in brick, this is a replacement. If you were installing, you would need to drill a new hole.

Hey Big, Not really sure what the concern is, but to us, brick is just another house material that must relent to the builder wishes. No damage is done to the structure - every brick house has quite a number of holes for utilities and the like. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

I have a kitchen on the first floor HAVE TO VENT to the side BRICK WALL I can't go up to the roof. The builder vented the dryer via the brick wall too.
