My D140 has a couple of rods around the motor pulley that make it difficult for the belt to be knocked off. Unfortunately, it also makes it difficult to get the belt back on. haha

Awesome video! Very well done and everything was straight forward and easy to understand. I will sheepishly admit I had no idea you move the idler pulley to make the final belt placement. In the past I was just manhandling the deck on my D160 and walking it onto the pulley. Very hard to do and now I know better.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines All turned out good , But it was a tight fit . I had to roll it on the main pulley , thought it was too tight - started it up and let it run for a while - had a good sound , all was well . Thanks again ... Keep those videos coming ....

i had to watch your video to see how the tension spring hooks up on the pulley and deck, i think the curved end hooks up on the pulley and the angled end twists and drops into the deck hole near the front . also a D160

Great job. Quick fix. The only thing I do differently is I lay out 2 pieces of 2"×2" under each side of the deck before I lower it all the way so that it's high enough off the ground that I can remove all the hardware without having to lift up on the deck. Cheers.

Thanks for guidance, man! Much appreciated. Got the belt replaced no problem. Since I had the deck off thought I'd replace the blades. Well - whomever put those bolts on last time must have used an impact driver!!! I could NOT get them off. Tips?

Leverage, long pipe on ratchet or wrench and blocks to hold the blades.

I’m pretty sure most or all 48” edge mower decks are very similar. Just make sure you get the correct belt for your model. I think I have seen some mower decks have more idler pulleys then others. That may have gone back some years. They all blend together in my head!LOL. Take your time and you’ll do fine:). Thank you for watching and the kind comment.

Official JD belt from the Lowe's I bought my tractor over 4yrs ago. 22hp v twin running strong 💪 keeping up with the maintenance and greasing everything on the reg... cause I plan on keeping this baby for as loooong as possible! Thanks again for your well informed video; I wouldn't have known the loop pattern without you! ✌️😎

I have a JD S120 w/3 hr.. My question, why does it blow white smoke ONLY when I start it? All's well the rest of the time, oil level is fine, dealer says it's pre-lube burning off, I'm leery, can you help me? Thanks.

If you have the choke on to long it would smoke but normally that would be blackish. I have never heard of “pre-lube” on a twin cylinder small engine but ok. I would say if it keeps happening and after you hit the ten hour mark and it’s still doing it, You should have a warranty and tell them you want it fixed. Oil is seeping past a oil seal or a ring isn’t seated properly. It’s internal in the engine and it should not blow white smoke at all with very low hrs. That’s my opinion.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks for the reply. They said to wait until 12-15 hr. if still happens to call them. I'm with you @ 10 hrs. Had to return it for a new starter after 1/2 hr. No problem with that returned in 1 day BUT now this?? Hope I didn't get a lemon?? I do like the mower, it does a good job cutting. Thanks again and I love the videos.

What is that U-shaped bar over top one of the pulleys? I just put a new belt on and was almost done mowing and the belt snapped.

Some mower decks had a extra guide. You either have more issue with the deck or did not use a John Deere belt. The belt guide would not make the belt break unless belt was running on the guide. Possible you hit something? Or cutting extremely tall grass? These are a guesses. Obviously cannot say either way without seeing the machine.

Thank you…..grass was not real high since we had no rain since last cut. Did not hit anything….maybe I put it on wrong which I doubt but I may have put pulleys back on in wrong order since I bought the 3 new blade spindles

Mr. Johnson, On those plastic covers covering the pullies, I have a bolt missing, is there a place to buy a few of those? I have been looking for a lawnmower graveyard so I can stock up on miscellaneous bolts screws and hardware with no luck. I got that idea while working on my sailboat, when I was restoring it I hit a few graveyards and got obsolete parts.

I would take one of the bolts to your local hardware store and they should be able to help. OR order them online.
