Great Question! Ram pump as a permanent hassle free system just isn't feesable. It works, it pumps but there's constant maintenance and upkeep. You basically have to keep your eye on it twice a day to ensure you're still pumping water. Then there's the freeze factor associated, it's just not a permanent setup...can't leave the farm for a day without something going wrong

Thank you for another great video. Can you share your rationale for not using the spare vertical pipe for twisting stability? I understand the second group of four solar panels was overkill.

I am from a colder climate but we drill a 1/16 weap hole in the tubing so the well drains below the frost line. Solar wells will freeze solid at night.

Can someone please tell me why my husband refuses to install any alternate power supply for our well? Okay, you don't know. But I'm so frustrated trying to get him to see how important it is to have a back up power system in place just in case the unthinkable happens. He feels there's no danger. WTH!

Iv´e been struggling with batteries for years, pumping water with an off grid system. I realized that this system is exactly what i need. Taking away the pump from my house is huge difference, since it´s about 1.7 KW/h less. Plus, the battery bank had to be pretty big to sustain that consumption without damaging the batteries (some lasted less than a year!) Thanks for the upload

Have you checked the price of a new complete windmill installation lately? It would cost double this install....and doing it without special equipment would be very difficult. We replace thousands of windmills every year....I know folks think they look cool but wait until they have to work on them. Some ranchers even leave the windmill up for looks but put a solar pump in for maintenance free water.

I worked construction building commercial solar fields. During the final QC walkthrough, we had a few panels that needed to be replaced. When the electricians disconnected one of those MC4 connectors, there was about a 16" power arc. Very powerful.

My thought exactly. I thought cows rub against anything that doesn't shock them. Raccoons and other critters (some two legged) can also cause problems. Better consider caging it in, instead of using the panels as shade. maybe also electrifying it; I hope we are both wrong. Also, it isn't too hard to imagine some thief getting electrocuted while trying to steal the solar panels. Electric utilities have paid millions to families of thieves who were electrocuted while stealing copper wire.

@@marlinl.306 1.. if your stealing something and you get hurt.. well they/families shouldn't be able to sue.. that's just wrong.. and after he put the panels on I think he said he would be putting a fence around it..

@@chelemichele1524Best I can remember the thief had been a lineman at one time, and had an understanding of how the safety equipment at the substation works, and he thought he had tripped the recloser (giant breaker), but it failed to work. I think the court found the power company guilty of negligence. agree completely that criminals should not have the same rights as law abiding citizens. I didn't catch that he was planning to add a fence. I remember him mentioning that the cows could use the solar panels as shade. so the fence can't be very far from the panels. Thanks for letting me know. Oh, and Josh, thanks for putting out videos like this one. I never considered a pump without a battery. I hope it works great for you. I know you spend lots of time doing research, and I'm sure it will pay off.

If you are putting a fence around the solar and well a simple trick you can do is to add a small chain link fence just outside that and plant some faster growing berry bushes between the fence lines as the cows will think they are getting a treat as they eat what they can reach. You will still get some berries on the inside of the fence with what is between them being for the wild animals in the area with the only real work you need to do is to cut the old limbs as they grow in but you can dispose of them by simply tossing to the cows.

Pumping water during the day to an elevated tank, or a ground tank at the highest point on the property is the most efficient solution. Use the free and reliable solar (it works everyday of the year) to pump water to the tank, you have your water and energy (gravity) stored in one. Perfect for that extinguishing the night time fire. Josh said it, store water not energy, just store your water up a bit higher, gravity is great at distributing water :-) Tanks are cheaper than batteries, locally produced, environmentally friendly and have a much longer life.

Running straight solar to DC devices is so much more efficient and so much cheaper. You’re almost never gonna need to use that at night anyway and a couple extra panels are cheaper than the battery, you could also put a battery in the back of your YouTV and probably jump it if you really needed to but it’s a couple extra panels even on days where you don’t have a ton of sunlight with enough panels it should still run. There are all kinds of DC things that you can run straight off of panels. I saw a guy use a DC mini split system for the upstairs of his house and he just turned it on the thermostat and whenever it was sunny enough outside to make it hot there was enough power to run it it wasn’t even connected to the grid it just ran straight off of panels and he only had four panels. There are all kinds of fans and exhaust systems and things that you can put on workshops and sheds and even animal shelters and there of course are all kinds of solar lights everybody knows about that would be really nice out in the middle of your property if you did have to deal with some thing at night and they look great on your pond. There are also very simple systems that you can get that are more than enough power to run Garage Doors and battery chargers. I’ve even seen a guy who had a golf cart that ran straight off of solar panels only and had no batteries and I’ve seen a small pontoon boat where the canopy was all solar panels that could run directly off of the panels or battery. But when you get rid of the inverter and batteries you save a ton of money and it is so much more efficient, inverse waste 15 to 30% of the power the panels are making anyway, if you can bypass that and go straight to DC run devices like this it’s so much cheaper and more efficient. Plus once you install one or two it’s pretty easy and you can buy most of the stuff online or a kit and do it yourself and save a ton of money on that as well. I never even thought of using one for a well pump without a battery. That’s pretty awesome. With a 200 W panel you can also restore almost unusable car batteries. It’s dangerous so of course I would never recommend it but basically pop the caps off and you can hook up a 200 W 12 V charger straight to it which is pretty much what a solar panel is at 200 W and you just watch it and disconnect when it starts to boil and just let it do that for about 10 minutes at a time for two or three hours and all the crud sticks to the electrodes in the batteries and causes them to die starts to chip and flake off then you can shake up your battery and dump all that out and put new acid in and your battery can last year’s longer. There are a lot of people out there doing that with the old lead acid batteries that a lot of people are sitting in their garage they just don’t really work and they’re keeping around for The core charge, But if you ever got stuck out somewhere in a survival situation, It’s a great way to restore your battery or even if it’s just dead fast charge it. You can get enough charge back in a 12 V battery with a 200 W panel usually within 5 to 10 minutes to start your vehicle again. I saw that one on KZfaq and the guy just took one of the connectors and wired it to a couple battery clamps and used the solar panel to recharge the battery on his Wood mill that wasn’t starting. Fun stuff

yep...spacing miscommunication on our parts.....If I'd have known how the whole setup was made I'd have seen that issue and corrected it...but we live and we learn....I've got another post going in next week and we'll double the power capacity!

Nice system hope it serves you well. Just curious if a battery pack could be installed as backup power?

Shawn, a battery could be used on any of our systems but this system is for stock water and irrigation of pasture so it is not needed. Storing water is always cheaper than storing power. When we design systems we like to understand the usage so we can make the system as efficient as possible, which will save you money.

Pretty close to what I'm looking for, but would be interested in a ballpark cost for what you did. I'm aware every product list and individual installation is different. Having an idea of cost will let me know if it's worth it to investigate further. Thanks and keep up the great information you put out.

won't do me a bit of good to tell ya cost...because prices are changing so much. Every system is gonna be different and the cost will reflect it...you may not need all the power or pump that I need. Hit up the contact Lorentz solar link and you can talk to someone about what you have and what you need my friend

He won’t give you the cost because it was probably $3000+. So regardless of price change what did this system cost you. You put this content out there so just say what it cost.

He won’t give you the estimate because it’s probably too much and he got it for free for this video
