TPMS, A tire pressure monitoring system lets you know if a tire is leaking air or if it is flat and creating dangerous driving conditions. Since older cars dont have TPMS and it is a really nice feature to have. In this video I show you how to install an inexpensive TPMS for your car or truck.

Having worked on cars before TPMS was mandated and after, I will say it helps prolong tire life. Now, I agree that people should "just check their tires". But I can tell you that many people simply do not. They don't check anything on their car. The amount of tires that come into the shop under inflated is far less today than in 2005. The amount of tires I have replaced due to inflation wear is far less. Personally I am glad only 1 of my cars have it (wife's Tiguan)

@@greatpix The weight of the sensor will probably be about 15-30 grams. Most tyre balancing machines will balance by 5g increments. A 30g imbalance after a year of wear is considered 'normal' for a car daily-driven, but ideally, should be rebalanced. However, not necessary. Keep in mind that a road wheel is naturally lighter where the valve inserts due to the fact it's less metal to create a hole. That's why, when you get new tyres, you'll sometimes see little dots on the tyre itself.

Thanks so much for the video, Chris! I just got done learning about tires in my auto class and realized how important it is to keep track of tire pressure. Also this makes me wonder: why don't manufacturers use this system? Instead they put the TPMS between the tire and wheel on the other side of the valve stem. Oh and fun fact my auto instructor told me, some TPMS sensors also read tire temperature but for some reason, people were dumb enough to think that the higher the temperature, the better it is for the tires so manufacturers had to remove that feature.

VIDEO IDEA. You could do a video on replacing an aging factory stereo head unit with a new one/aftermarket. You could include running a new power supply. When I did my radio I had to run a new positive power supply because the stock radio got its power in a way I didn't understand. Monsoon if you've ever heard of it. complicated radio system. I put in new speakers too. The stock speakers had 4 wires each which would not work with a new head unit.

Bought several sets of a less expensive model last year and had very good luck with them on several cars EXCEPT they came with aluminum (silver) security lock nuts, not brass as in your video. Over time, galvanic corrosion froze the lock nuts in position, requiring me to cut them off the stems using diagonal or side cutter pliers (the nuts need to be out of the way to refill the tires). Put the sensors back on, and no one has ever stolen a single one, and none have loosened on their own. So, my advice is DON'T install the lock nuts if they are aluminum!

You can not check your tire pressures while your vehicle is in motion. And when it's in motion is when you pick up something that will cause your tire to go flat. And with a TPMS, it gives you ample time to pull over and check to see if your tire is going flat and put the spare on and not damage your tires. It's especially useful when you have expensive, low profile tires.

TPMS saves lives. Was cruising down the road at 75 MPH on a very bumpy freeway. Picked up a screw (verified by finding hole in tire carcass after tire blew). The screw somehow came out of tire. Not knowing that tire was deflating while driving on bumpy freeway, it was slowly deflating causing tire to overheat. Before I could sense that something was wrong tire exploded and truck ( towing small trailer, which also was causing resistance making it hard to detect that I had an upcoming catastrophe). It was dawn and getting dark which added another problem. I did not see all the smoke coming from the overheating tire. The tires were in good condition and properly inflated before I drove, for anyone who might think that was an issue ( as mentioned earlier I did find the original cause of the problem, I always check my tires on long trips even when stopping for food, rest and gas). All of a sudden car in right lane started flashing head lights, I looked in right side mirror and could see the smoke in his headlights, tire exploded at that moment causing for a wild ride. Managed to slow down an get over to shoulder, but it wasn't easy. Changing a tire at night along a fast moving freeway is scary and no fun. TPMS would have given my a heads-up that I had an issue and given me time to find a lit area off of the freeway to plug or change the tire in a safer location. I do carry a small compressor and plug kit on trips (Nevada to Pennsylvania).Hopefully they make an aftermarket kit that also gives a low pressure warning.Trying to keep a vehicle in control, changing a tire along a fast moving freeway at night, 3-4 hours of lost travel time, $200 for a new tire. Yeah $109, I'll take it.

To the smart asses saying they just wouldn't be lazy and check their tire pressure with an analog gauge. If your that proactive about checking your pressure good for you. But what you arent proactive enough to do is check your wheel temp. So when your temp is significantly higher on one wheel compared to the other three you'll know somethings wrong and have it checked out. Its how i was able to diagnose that my wheel bearing was bad even though it hadnt started to make a clear sound yet. But it did save me from chewing up a $300+ tire too badly. I think it had just started to cup. But it could have been a bad caliper or a couple other things thats best to catch as early as possible. Ill always have a tpms monitor system on my vehicle and trailers. Its an invaluable tool. Anyone saying otherwise is woefully misinformed on exactly what they do. Id suggest reading up on something before you make a foolish statement about it

I have an 07 Chevy Cobalt and it didn't come with TPMS because it was made in late 2006 and sold as a 2007 model. TPMS became mandatory on all vehicles made after 09/01/2007. Purchased the kit shortly after buying new tires a few years ago. The tires are low profile and is difficult to tell if they are low on air. One day, around a year after buying the tires, I got into the car and the monitor was beeping. Showed the front right tire was low. Looked at the tire and it looked ok. Checked the tire and it had a nail in it. Aired it up and later on got the tire fixed. Saved me from driving on a low/flat tire which would have ruined it . A new tire alone would have cost over $100.

They Work perfectly fine, one should be carful with the placing of them but with some testing its easy. In the end if you bump into something it's Going to cost more than 15€ to fix, So it a good safety feature to prevent damage repairs. Even if a part fails, the whole kit cost 15€ you could replace cheaply each part. An OEM sensor costs wayyy more than this whole kit and in the end does the same. Do a video it's worth it!

As an auto tech that works in a tire shop, never fill your tires to the pressure on the sidewall. That's the absolute maximum they should be at. As you drive, your tires heat up, heat = expansion. If you have already filled your tires to their max pressure, BOOM! You just had a blowout. I see this CONSTANTLY in the summer. Always go by the door sticker, or if you don't have one, go at least 10-15 psi below the max on the sidewall.

They should consider adding a pressure monitor for the spare tire. That's often difficult to access when you want to check it. Unless I add a valve stem extension, I have to remove mine from the storage well in the trunk just to reach the Schrader valve.

I bought some after watching this video a year ago. I did it primarily because I have 24" rims and little rubber between the rim and road. This assures my tires are fully pressured and I don't have to worry about damaging the rims or tires.

When you change your tires make sure to use metal valves and not rubber. The TPMS valve cover is heavy and put some strain on the valve causing a tear after some use.

Awesome, this is much better than having to dismount a tire, then take the tire apart, to just replace a disposable TPMS followed by putting the tire back together and re-balancing it. All that work gets expensive fast, especially since not many DIYers have access to a tire machine at home.

Sadly some cars the cigarette plug is on the bottom of the center console under the A/C controls normally in front of the gear stick so you wont be able to see the pressures, unless their is a version with a portable screen that you can place somewhere.

PSA, the market is now flooded with low quality external sensor TPMS systems similar to this one. Some of them plug into the cigar lighter like this one, some of them plug into USB, and some of them have solar power chargers. The real scam appears to be sets that are sold without the specialized tool shown at 4:24 which is required to open it up and replace the sensor batteries. I have yet to buy a set that includes the tool, grr. There are some other interesting problems with the design. First is that you no longer rely on your valves in your valve stems to keep the pressure in the tire. Instead, the sensor opens that valve and the seal with the sensor on the valve stem is what maintains the pressure. Chris was really good to emphasize the soapy water check before continuing. Second problem is that these little devices add some outward force to the valve stems when the wheels are rotating at high speed. I have seen users report that their valve stems failed after a short amount of use.

However, the USB port on the side still had power and worked fine. Was super bummed but figure maybe that's why they stopped selling em and the reason it was on clearance. Was accurate and I really liked being able to see the temperatures of each individual wheel, that could help warn of a wheel bearing gone or going bad. Are you using yours? Does it still work?
