Loved the vid, Kudos. Wear Gloves when whinching!!! 35 years of Africa 4x4 will take you places nobody has been, will also teach you the hard way, easier to listen to an old bugger. Seen nastly recoveries and which failures. Even so loved you video and also picked up some tips for me to remember. Now where can I find a mate to do all that heavy lifting? Well done!

Great Video Steve. The isolator switch is a catch 22 situation: if don't install it you have a BIG wire always live but if you install it you have one more device that can fail in an emergency situation. As far as winching the car in half I haven't come across one single person that it has happened yet. Thanks
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 4 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree it’s another thing to fail but it’s not a massive job to just bolt the 2 wires together if needed. I’ve heard story’s of it but never really seen it. I have seen winches get stuck on and destroy the front of cars before.

@@Australian4x4Adventures yep I've had two of those type of switches fail on me. Still glad I have one installed, because I had the solenoid break off inside the control box and rub through the wires on the inside. Plus I'm paranoid of someone bumping on the remote and destroying my bar and winch.

Great video Steve as always. I don't like using isolators on winches as I have seen so many fail. Instead of using an isolator on my car, I have alter the control box wiring and allow it to activate only with the ignition on, just incase you decide to winch my car in half lol

@@petersgq351c doing it your way means you have voltage always live running from the battery along yhe thick power cable. With the isolater ol mate is using, there isnt 12v power running through the cables all the time, good if u ever get into a front on accident and so there isnt a live 12v power feed running all through the engine bay that could arc out and cause a fire.

Only one key point missing like all the winch install videos and also for refitting a winch as well, the install videos need to make a verbal point that its important that a winch motor is on the drivers side of a vehicle and the clutch on the passenger side and if a rear winch is being fitted then the motor is on the passenger side and clutch on the drivers side for a rear winch set up. I see quite a few winches installed the wrong way and often people with the motor on the wrong side and you can noticeably tell the difference when swapped to the correct way installed. Also assuming the drum brakes are designed to work better in one directions. I learnt that hard way and now have mine mounted the correct way.

@andrewwright6618 Жыл бұрын
@@chas3r_DWAG I would say logic that's the way the manufactures design them to work. If you want more logic ask the questions to your winch manufacturer. I say this as the Runva winch manufacturer confirmed they should be fitted a certain way with rope in o certain way as well.
@chas3r_DWAG
@chas3r_DWAG Жыл бұрын
See the winch I just bought had both sides needing to be clocked to be that orientation and then on top of that it puts the electrical connections further away from the battery which is worse from an electrical stand point eg. Volt drop. I have now put it in the way you have mentioned but to me the logical choice would be whatever gives the electrical system the least stress. Mechanically it seems the same to me. I will say my mechanical aptitude isn't the greatest though 😅
@andrewwright6618
@andrewwright6618 Жыл бұрын
@@chas3r_DWAG you will find it pulls slightley harder and when holding the rope it wont slow slightly. Assuming the brakes were also designed to work best one way. i had a winch brake fail with the winch back to front but now that winch the right way works as designed. as far as volt drop you can add larger 00 cable if your concerned

Thanks Steve, that is a good looking winch, and the cheapest of the second tier winches at about a grand. I didn't see where you put it, that little red strap, but point of contention: If it has a loop at one end then it goes on the hook - Warn style, but if it has a loop at both ends it is meant to be a load limiting device to stop the cable from unspooling all the way to the bolt that ties the rope to the drum - how many loops did your little red strap have?? Cheers mate.

"I'm gonna winch ya car onto the tow truck or a trailer and pinch it.. lol" as if, ok a new idea for someone. I have been a towie & heavy haulage operator for many years and NEVER heard of anyone saying "I'm gonna winch ya car in half" it must be where your hanging out haha... My Winch has NO winch isolator switch and it was put in by a professional. What is wrong with filing or taking some off the side of the free winch spool control handle to make it turn fully or grind some of the bull bar frame to achieve the same goal? So do you pay ya mates lots or not.. I think they need to tell you to bugger off and "Do it Ya-self".... I was always taught (Ex-RAN Firefighter) to put the dampner at the Middle of the length of tow as it can be seen and also breaks the direction of the ricochet, thus possibly saving your life.
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 4 жыл бұрын
I’ll try find a photo of a car being winched in half and post it on my insta 😂. The winch damper in the middle of the run came from when everyone used cable. Rope doesn’t hold energy so it just drops. Unfortunately the hook doesn’t. So you cover the hook.
@TimsBitsnPieces
@TimsBitsnPieces 4 жыл бұрын
@@Australian4x4Adventures Your correct Re the cable days, but I would still put the dampner at about 1/2 length so I can see it (the cable) and see what is happening..
