In this episode of “Wrenching with Rottweiler” Chris tackles installing a new AXP Skid Plate on the KTM 890 Rally shop bike. He discusses the hardware that comes with the bike, how to mount the brackets, properly bolting the skid plate to the bike, and even adding the graphics. The AXP Poly Skid Plate for the 790/890 Adventure comes in two colors (Orange & Black) and can be installed with ease.
AXP Racing's Poly Skid Plate for the KTM 790/890 Adventure features a tough, thick 8mm poly plate that's designed to protect your Engine, Fuel Tanks & your Rear Shock Linkage. AXP's design utilizes aluminum mounting brackets which mount to existing skid plate mounts and frame points, unlike other skid plates that utilize engine mounting points. HDPE is a great material for skid plates because it's lightweight, durable, flexes on impact and slides over obstacles. Unlike Aluminum plates which are heavy, bend and more times than not cause annoying vibration noise caused by metal on metal contact at the mount.

Already have the AXP from you but learned a few things, like loosening the footpeg bolts! I’m always wedging that spacer in with a soft mallet. You guys put out great videos and PDF instructions (airbox & single brake disc come to mind) and really helpful when you include the torque specs & loctite info….saves time. And it looks like AXP changed the design slightly with the crap flap cutouts so you don’t have to align the front top bolts through both pieces any more, making it a little easier. Thanks again. Great stuff.

I did a few things different. For the footpeg mount I loosened up all three bolts. I started the footpeg bolt without the spacer so I could move the skid plate around. I did the front bolts, but I didn't tighten them up. Then I went back to the rear bolts and put the spacer in, then tightened them up. I went back to the front and tightened them up. I have an Adventure (non-R), I replaced the low fender with a high fender. It was hitting the crap flap, so I ended up trimming part of the top of the crap flap off with a cutting wheel. Really easy, now I have a handful of bolts from the stock skidplate I can use for spares. Thanks for the help!

Just installed mine, thanks! Very helpful the only different that I had to do was to loose the Torx 50 of the left foot peg, so the bush can fit. Thanks!

I read through couple of ADV posts regarding modifying the fuel pump guard. I just thought of alternative mod. Ask AXP to cut a hole in skid plate where the fuel pump is and weld a cap on top of the hole. That would effectively increase spacing by thickness of AXP plastic.

I just did this install after having this plate sitting for a while, and the chain can be pushed to touch the plate aluminum rail. The chain itself doesn't seem super loose, but I'm just guessing that this should not touch. I had my dealer replace and drop a tooth on the front sprocket but they kept the original chain and I also have the Xplor Pro shocks... any idea how this can work out?

Great install videos as usual. Question: the entire skid plate has to come out for oil change?

Not really. You just need to remove the four front bolts and it will pivot down. Or, if you have a tricky funnel you can leave it in place. The mounts to allow room for the side drain screws to come out, but you'll still get a little oil in the pan with that method. The four bolt thing in the front is easy and worth it.

Great video...Is there any chance that this AXP skid plate can be made to work with my OEM KTM center stand?

With some creativity maybe, but it uses the same mounts that the rear center stand does to mount the rear of the skid pan. I’m not sure if anyone has done it, and I know that with a 901 Norden they are offering two different types that work with and without the center stand so maybe at some point they may offer that for the 890 adventure as well. For now they don’t work with them on the KTM, but again with some creativity you may be able to figure it out if you were a decent fabricator.

Do you require / have the Rottweiler fuel pump guard? Do you have to remove the foot pegs bolts to remove AXP skid plate for oil + filter change?

It’s not required with the skid pan, but certainly a good thing to have. An oil change can be done by just removing the (4) bolts at the front of the pan (about one minute) and just hinging the pan down. Super easy.

That's awesome. Do you know if the AXP is strong enough to support a ATV / jack under the skid plate to lift bike for working on wheels ? @@RottweilerPerformance

@@greatfallskam As long as the lifting point is a larger surface area we have done it just fine. We would avoid using something that is smaller and would focus the weight on a small area though. A dedicated street bike jack that spreads the load would be perfect. We have one here and it works well with the AXP.

What do you do with the hose that plugged into a hole on the stock skid plate?

Whatever you want really. Most just poke it out one of the holes but the most important part is keeping it off of the exhaust and that it can drain away from it.

So will the 890 AXP pan fit my 901 with minor bolt changes? I see you have the 901 pan coming the end of March.

The bolt pattern is the same, but it will NOT fit. The Norden fuel tanks are coming so it would probably be best to just wait. You can check our live chat during working hours for an ETA on them. Currently it’s the weekend so I’m not sure when but the customer service guys should know.

Would heavy bashes impact the engine or is the majority of the force being absorbed by the foot peg mount?

These dissipate energy pretty well. Are they as gnarly or subsequently heavy as aluminum, no, but they fill a large niche for most owners we find.

What would be the benefit of a axp hdpe vs like the ktm oem full aluminum or the Beaumont full metal skid

We like these for medium to medium/heavy bash protection. They do a great job at deflection without getting bent up like aluminum and glide across things rather than grind into them like aluminum can. For heavy duty we would suggest thicker aluminum pans but many of them rely on the wimpy side covers where the AXP shines with HDPE covering the fuel tank as well with minimal weight added on (2lbs). Stock is super soft aluminum and worthless for much more than sticks and brush.

Almost. The drain bolts are accessible but one of the braces kind of blocks the flow of oil draining. That being said, you really just need to remove the 4 front bolts (super easy) and then hinge the skid pan down pivoting on the rear mounts. It might be good to also use a 45 Torx and just loosen the rear mounts at the foot peg assembly. That’s about it.

For all intents and purposes we should get them around the same time and offer free shipping within the contiguous US states, but we wouldn’t want to take a sale from AXP either if you have already placed it. We are probably their biggest US distributor so once they start arriving I’m sure we will be shipping a lot of them around.

The V2 comes in two options: Touring and Hard. Touring has the possibility for the center stand, the "hard" one isn't.

That’s a great question that we unfortunately can’t answer decisively since we do not sell that brand of crash bars. Combining two aftermarket items that were not designed with the other in mind can always be risky, but in this case we would suggest reaching out to Adventure Spec to see if they know or have had experience with other skid pans. In our experience if anyone has feedback on it, the manufacturer is usually the best place to start. Otherwise we would have really liked to answer this for you if we knew. When you find out, would you mind posting back here for others?

About the time it takes to remove 4 bolts from the front. It pivots down and allows plenty of space to do what you need to do. Not that different from stock really in terms of time.

How close does the upper side of the skid plate come to the tank? I am worried about rubbing. I have seen other Blue tanks having the paint rubbed off and seeing a white tank underneath. It shows it on Chris Birches bike. This from the original protections. Do you think this will be a problem with the AXP? And if so then would little rubber stoppers with sticky adhesive work around the perimeter of the tank where the AXP area that would touch and vibrate against the tanks?

You sure could do that. Depends on how into the dirt you get really but there is no doubt that it could be protected. They don't touch the tanks that we have seen though. Only if you take a dirt nap.

You're worried about rubbing the finish off the tank of a rally? If you're using that bike for what it's meant for that should be the least of your worries.

It's actually only about 2 lbs heavier than stock. It's low and centered so you'll never feel that.

Is the plastic skid durable enough or would a metal one be better

They are pretty tough. Aluminum is better for hard core rocks and landing on boulders and things like that, but they are heavy and are 'sticky' when trying to slide over rocks. The AXP will keep it's shape, not bend like aluminum and take a good hit being HDPE plastic and 8mm thick (1/4). They take a pretty good beating and handle low sides really well protecting the fuel tank.

Some have yes, but all current parts have the brace which has completely eliminated any possible issue there. If you have been using it with no issues, you are probably fine.

Center stand doesn't work with most aftermarket skid pans. It's something you'll just have to decide for yourself if you really need or not vs protection. Oil changes are just taking out the front 4 bolts and just hinging the skid pan down. Not that big of a deal.

@@Jaws-3 Look up 'Form a Funnel'. That's what we use. Just take it off! Considering you only change the oil every 9000 miles 5 to 10 extra minutes is not worth not putting the skid plate on!

Most people just zip tie it to the right side of the skid pan or engine.
