35 years ago I learned from a veteran carpenter of 45 years to cope inside corners whether they be crown or baseboard paint or stain. That is still my preferred method however they do have more complicated tools out to more accurately cut out of square inside and outside corners. I usually cut the 45 deg. Cope and then cut back around 15 degrees or use a belt sander where I can. I had to practice for 2 months as a beginner until I learned it. Once you do it enough it really isn't that difficult or overly time consuming to get that professional looking joint. Cut the long wall square on the ends and cope the short wall and if you have a 1 inch belt sander try that for excess cope material removal up to the cope line. I know some guys use them for the whole coping stock removal and they are very good and fast at it.

FYI. I pulled my baseboard to replace our tile floor. I noticed small pieces of 1/2 mdf in the space between the concrete floor and the drywall. They were at the spots where it was nailed to prevent the baseboard from pulling under into the gap. Nice video. It should help a lot when I put back the new baseboard. Thanks.

Thanks for the video! Since you mentioned caulking trim, I wanted to pass along a tip someone gave me. Anytime you caulk small seams or gaps where your fingers are too big to exert pressure, consider using a damp sponge instead of a damp rag. The sponge is springy enough that it will push itself into little gaps and seams, and its simpler to clean if you have much caulking to do. Constantly bunching up a rag and trying to find clean spots on it gets old fast.

Hi Jose! What I do is add a little adhesive like "no nails" to the back of the trim then I use a standard air brad nailer and 1-1/2" 18 gauge nails. The trick is holding the trim tight to the wall and firing the nails at a slight angle (maybe about 30 degrees). Be sure that you are nailing above the metal track and away from any studs. Good question!

12:43 - to avoid your mitre joint from opening its best to cope the baseboard using a coping saw. That way you have a nice tight joint and don’t have to use caulk, which imho looks like crap. Otherwise I’ve always enjoyed watching your videos and learning new tips and tricks. Great work 👍

Good stuff, man. Love your channel. I started at the top, painted the walls and the ceilings in my house, did crown moulding in most of it, redid the window trim and now I'm down to the floors where I tore up carpet and tearing up linoleum in the kitchen and dining and hallway. Moved on to door trim and baseboards. It's rewarding doing it yourself. Takes a bit of patience but the fine detail is what makes the job.

I'm not a 'finisher carpenter' as it's known in the U.S or Canada, but in Australia I like to use a a piece of of fence picket or something smooth and flexi and use it on the top of the skirting (baseboard ) to push it hard down onto the flooring..then fix it off. It can help to create a nice and smooth skirting. But nice vid mate.

I see all the "professionals" out there are putting this vid down for not coping inside corners but no one has commented on how long coping takes compared to a mitered cut. Having done many years of work for the Big Box stores teaches you time is money and it's not always possible to give up so much extra time for a perfect job, especially now that the Big Box stores subs out all their jobs to Prime Contractors and most of time they in turn sub it out cheaply to other contractors or employees who get paid hourly and with a bonus if they can get the work done quickly. What i do on paint grade baseboards, is miter the inside corners at 44 degrees and outside corners at 46 degrees. Since most corners are not perfectly square this method compensates for this by allowing the most visible edges to come together first and look better. Then before i put the inside corners together i used a water clean up white caulking on one of the corners so when it's pressed together and nailed the caulking squirts out a little and is simply wiped clean with a clean, damp rag. Most corners don't even need touch up paint Outside corners are usually tight with the 46 degree method. If you are working for an engineer be careful...they can be very anal so take this into consideration if you are bidding a job. Ask the customer if they want the inside corners all mitered and bid according for the extra time it's going to take you to satisfied their anal demands. Stain grade baseboards should be coped for best results. This is based on 43 years of experience.

Jack Ellenberger coping only takes an extra 20 seconds per piece. You can cut and cope that whole room in 10 min. You could nail the whole room in about the same amount of time and not have to use any caulk. I've seen big box store work and I would never hire them to do any trim in my house. I've been trimming for 18 years and learned the first day you dont miter inside corners. Time is money but theres no money if theres no quality.
@RangerCaptain11A6 жыл бұрын
stfsgtweb99 do you glue all your joints? i know carpenters that use biscuits to improve the miters. do you use a scribe and trim the bottom edge to fit the floor contours? do you shim the bottom of the wall to make up for the drywall being thinner at the edges? do you caulk the bottom in wet locations? there's no money if there's no quality.
@captain7577475 жыл бұрын
Exactly. This is what the home improvement stores contract out to. Coping does not take that long but coming back to repair sloppy corners takes a lot longer. Also I use a digital out side corner angle finder and never assume the corner is going to be 90 degrees. And this bozo putting a stud finder on a 18 inch wall? Duh there is always a stud beside an electrical outlet. and next to door casing. I have never found a stud in the middle of an 18 or 24 inch wall. Instead of making videos he needs to be watching some!!!

I learned one new trick from this video. Shoot the nail in an angle to keep the top part of the trim from jumping out when there is no stud there. I liked that. Everything else I already knew.. I'm not gonna pretend I'm a professional, but this method seems the most fool proof way to install baseboards. I looked up a couple vids on coping and that seems more technical. I'm sure there are endless amount of people that can properly do coping in a few minutes, but that's not everybody. It takes finesse and skill (which is why it looks better) but personally, I could do this (since the saw does the cut), I don't know if I could do coping proper. This job (with caulking) looks fine to me. Once you get furniture and things in the room, it would look even better.
@HouseImprovements9 жыл бұрын

A simple fix for the inside corner/miter is to put some shim material behind the lower part near the miter so that it pushes it out and closes the miter. And there's nothing wrong with mitering an inside corner. It actually locks in both pieces so wood glue isn't necessary.

I hear what you are saying about using adhesive to hold baseboards on. But remember that baseboards sometimes need to come off, to refinish flooring, change carpet, run extra wiring, etc. If the baseboard is glued to the paper of the drywall, it's tricky to remove without time-consuming damage to the wall. Pin nails aren't perfect but they do permit you to remove and replace wooden baseboards.
@rla10004 жыл бұрын
7:10 Not sure about that cross-armed hold, I'm a rightie too but would either reverse my hands on that cut or easily extend the left fence on that Bosch and hold on the left side of blade. But I see you still have both hands and arms so whatever works.
@ritchiemclean11 жыл бұрын
You will get alot of gaps on internal mitres, thats why its beat to butt one length of board to the wall then do the 45 on the other part and use a coping saw and follow along mitre and slot the board into the straight cut, perfect fit everytime.
@HouseImprovements11 жыл бұрын
Adhesive on the back and a few brad nails shot in at an angle through the drywall. The angled nails will generally hold things in place until the adhesive sets up.
@HouseImprovements11 жыл бұрын
I would tend to use a small 1/4 round trim . you install your normal baseboard then install the 1/4 round by pushing it tight to the flooring and nailing it into the baseboard. When you silicone it makes it tough to remove when you change the flooring and silicone also attracts dust and dirt over time so it appears dirty all the time.

Thanks for the vid man, to cope or not to cope? That is the question, to each his own and as usual perspective gets thrown right out the window. In other words, if you're a business owner and want to do the best job possible and are known for it then absolutely take the time and cope the corners, especially in high end homes. Or if you're a DIY'er who wants the best look without having to caulk the same reasoning applies, if you're a homeowner who wants to do the job but can't quite get a hold of coping then fine, whatever, break the caulk out, doesn't make it the wrong way just not the same quality job if it was coped. If you work for a company that wants it done a certain way then it is what it is. With that I will say that the gap in this particular vid was substantial and while caulk will work in the moment it won't take long before the caulk starts to crack and look gnarly to which someone will have to eventually re-caulk it. Coping is the better way for sure but as a lot of these comments have eluded to it's not for everyone and that's okay, very, very few of the homeowners guests are going to judge whether or not you've coped you're inside corners!

Great video, very helpful. You discuss safety very early in the video however, there is really never a reason to perform work without the proper protection. If you can see the blade, which you can, your eyes are in danger. In addition, on your second cut, you turn your head away from the saw while you stick your hand under the blade to remove the piece. Those blade guards have been known to stick in place, leaving your arm exposed to a rotating blade. I'm also quite sure your nailer has explicit direction to wear safety equipment. I have practiced and preached industrial safety for over 40 years. If you are providing instruction to beginners, it would serve them, AND you, to learn and practice safe habits.

The two long sides of a 4x8 sheet of drywall are thinner at the edge so the baseboard always has issues on an inside corner when the bottom of the trim is pushed up against the bottom of the wall. Doing this makes the trim tilt outward at the top. To prevent this a shim has to be used near the inside corner at the bottom of the wall to space the bottom of the trim away from the wall while allowing the top to lay against the wall. A shim of 1/16 to 3/32 will usually do the trick. Cheers
