At one point the small local store I work at took in a Savannah Monitor who'd been abandoned at a hotel/resort in a dirty 40g with no heating and a dead uneaten rat, I definitely fell in love with his personality as he recovered and got more energy. To this day he's the one reptile I've met who would intentionally shove his head/neck into your hand and truly seemed to enjoy having the area behind his ear pet, he'd just sit there and close his eyes without a care in the world. I didn't have the space and resources to take him home myself but I think they may be a potential dream pet when I do get some space, and honestly I think target training for feeding would work extremely well with them! It works well with food motivated snakes and i've even heard of this method being used in zoos etc to move komodo dragons to different enclosures without having to restrain them or stress them out.

For my Savannah, as he was growing up I’d always let him smell my hands before i did anything in his cage. Therefore he associates his cage with feeding grounds but he has to smell my hands before i do anything. He scouts out before biting every time. He associates the smell with food rather than the appearance with food. He might think my hands are food, but he always smells it before biting or lunging.

Yes! When I feed i NEVER have line of sight contact with them. I also make it seem as though it magically appeared lol but I ALWAYS make direct physical contact when cleaning the enclosure or doing anything else in there and randomly every now and again. It makes for a much more polite critter.

I always used large feeding tongs, and rarely fed mine in its cage. That way he was aware when it was feeding time and not. Your Savvy is beautiful and seems very tame. Great Job!

When its not feeding time for my15 foot long Burmese, I open the cage and talk to him. It's not what I say, (it could be reading the phone book!), it's the calm voice and he knows it's time to come out and explore rather than dinner time, which can get a bit crazy! His favourite play area is up and down the stairs! '

You have such great relationships with all these creatures. I'm learning so much about them from you. I've always been fascinated by reptiles but would never own one. I won't feed a creature to another creature. That doesn't meant that I don't appreciate what you do though. I think it's wonderful that you do so much rescue and that you are able to give these guys the love and attention that they lacked in their previous homes. They obviously care about you too. Thank you for making their lives better.

This is an AWESOME video! Your chew ball and tug o war toy videos helped my s.i.l. so much with enrichment for his tegu! They sent me pics of him with the chew ball in his mouth and I stare he was smiling ! I wish I could send it to you. He looked sooooo happy! This is a great, great video ! I taught my blood python that a light tap on the head from a snake hook means it's not feeding time so that all other times she has a really strong feeding response which has made her into the most reliable eater

I definitely recommend building him at least a 8x4x4 honestly 6' high is even better. They love to climb!!!! def recommend 18-24" of substrate as well also i feed mine 2x's a week they are notorious for fatty liver disease their stomachs shouldn't ever be touching the ground while walking. Dean cheatem is on fb. He has bred savs and everything i know i've learn from and followed what he does. He is awesome def when it comes to savannahs!!! i rescued my sav from a 20 gallon tank extremely overweight and now he is slender and athletic is extremely active. He only bask for a short period of time then back to exploring, climbing, digging and foraging for anything he can find! i feed mine 2-3 times a week tops. if he is extra active i feel him 3 times its all based off how active he is! Awesome video on socializing!

This is exactly what I did to mine and check it my videos he's a butthole sometimes but all in all he's a good boy :) these guys are so smart I love it my yoshi gets excited when I enter the room makes me feel like I have a pretty dinosaur :)

Lel hehe my savannah monitor is like god sand mice or what else i have in my hand he is not intrested in it when i get it in the feeding tong he start to get food sensitive and start to eat like a crazy boy and only did clicker training

Anamal1 guy How you get him to be so cool mine's about half the size and hes afraid to death of everything I've had him since Christmas At 1st I tried playing with him he just stayed super afraid of everything then I tried leaving him alone for a couple months cuz Everything I Read said give him space and now it's worse any tips

The bond has to be started with food. If you tong feed him start that and slowly get it closer and closer to your body. That way he starts eating next to you and comes to you when its time to eat. always make sure you do something to let him know its food time, tongs, ball training etc. then slowly start having him come just to hang out.

hello i have a question if i own an adult monitorand i have him outside on a cage, when its cold do i leave the heat lamp on 24/7 on its cage or should i have him inside?

It depends on how cold, If you have a hide box with heat on a thermostat you can lock him in at nights to make sure he stays warm but not to hot.

Interesting. I always feed all my reptiles in their enclosure which some people are very opposed to, ive never gotten bit though and it is because I always use the same routine for everything I do and I read behavior. Some snakes or lizards only chill out after being touched. Other reptiles just need to get the smell or visual from me. With my snakes my que is an open palm facing them directly and then one palm to fist movement and then a tap on the substrate with that hand. I then let them watch me touch them and go on about my business. How I handle monitors is very similar but the point is that it is very important to have those ques and a routine you can follow with any reptile

this is the only color they come in, they have not been successful in breeding any morphs. The best place is a reptile show, but even pet stores have them now. If you see different colors, its a different type of monitor, like as black throat, or white throat monitor.

QUESTION, I have had savanah monitors before I just got another one around 1 and a half years and it took 1 month 1 MONTH to get him hand able I can hold him he's a rescue and already decent big and already tame after a month

Their face is so CUTE! Thank you for the advice, I got a lot of time till mine is big enough to have confidence to start real training. Personally I think I'm going to mix this technique and only using tongs for feeding. I'll probably also do the bath tub technique since it worked well in the past with my iguanas.

yes, spend time with it, pet it. talk to it. when you can finally take it out, take a bath with it. bath bonding is the best

This is probably a very dumb question and it would likely be years to possibly never for me to have the space/money for an additional member to the family, but would a monitor (or bearded dragon) be okay in a household with cats in it?

Hello, I would say it's possible but you need to train your cats to be use to your lizard and not see him as food or threat. I know people with iguana and a cat and it's doing well. I think big lizard is better, cats will less see them as food.

the more i look into Savhanna monitors and having them properly hosued and trained the more i realize just what a bad rap they get that they don't really deserve, that being said the lights and genral heating and monitor proofing all of it seems like a lot of work but it also seems really worth it

Monitor lizards will grow to about 80% size within the first year, and then get to roughly 100% by the time they turn 2. He turned 1 in June.

I fed mine a live scorpion last week. Was pretty interesting to see what he would in terms of killing it. Also, I’ve never done any sort of training to my monitor. In fact I’ve been feeding him from my palm and finger tips since he was a hatchling, from that there’s never been anything even close for him mistaking my hands for food and never any close calls. He’s a year old now. I just reach in his cage and pet his face and he just chills.

No he has never had stuck shed since he soaks in his tub every day. But he was still growing quickly then so he had lots of shed.

He needs a bigger enclosure for his size. They are active lizards and he could get obese. An adult Savannah monitor's should have a huge enclosure almost or as big as it's own room in a house.

That's a great tip, but I size my enclosures based on the animals personality and of course the size of the animal. For Simba this enclosure fits him perfectly. I film all my reptiles during the day with cameras to see how they behave. He is active, but he likes to dig he has over 1 foot of substrate to dig in and he has made his caves. Other than that he lays lol, but I interact with my reptiles everyday. He for instance gets let out everyday and exercised. We go for walks outside everyday, and also play fetch. I have larger size enclosures ready to go if he ever shows his activeness. This is a main reason why i do it based on the reptiles personality and not the species.
