Here are 3 fight tips for when throwing a kick, to help avoid getting your leg caught. People often catch body kicks (roundhouse, front teeps) so these 3 techniques will minimize the chances of getting swept on your butt!

As a kid, I wondered why Bruce Lee never advocated/taught the roundhouse kick or high kicks or any of those flashier kicks, even though he would do them in the movies. I later learned, in application, that getting the leg caught was why. He mainly emphasized non-telegraphed side kicks with direct (not circular) movement with a snap at the end which also winds up serving a similar purpose as your suggested kick withdrawal.

henryk077 high kicks should be avoided in "real" fighting thats true in general, however high kicks can be very lethal and suprising to the enemy taking that the one who throws high kicks knows absolutely what he is doing!!! unless you are 100% sure you are accurate and fast with high fancy kicks than you should not try it! its high risk high reward, if you are a black belt teakwando then yeah you are gonna very fast with high kicks and most people in street fights dont expect high kicks.
@capitandelnorte
@capitandelnorte 5 жыл бұрын
@@grailknight6794 it´s true, Muay thai fighters like Superlek has some amazing high kick knock outs, it´s a deadly kick, but you need to warm up for that stuff so trying to throw one on the street would be too much risk. Ohyes, and you might not want to you know, kill someone. Better to go for the balls or a good sidekick to the solar plexus if you ask me

Because they're not practical for street fighting, Bruce Lee used simple and fast moves, not complicated ones that take years of training to become proficient in.

Very good tips! I find that I get my leg caught a lot when sparring, but the annoying thing is that many people are really willing to sacrifice their defense by dropping hands and "chasing" your leg, to show off that they got it and then sweep you. They even allow high kicks to land on their head, while focusing on catching your foot. People need to understand that you are kicking them lightly and they have to protect themselves at all times....you can't allow kicks just to go through (especially on the head) just because it's light sparring. I always tell my teammates this and if they don't listen I do remind them with a slightly harder kick.

If you throw a kick to the mid section whilst they are throwing a lazy jab you can land a kick underneath the punch on the same side and they won't have time to catch it as they are already throwing out the punch. Great video Shane!

First thing I learned at the gym. Always set up with punches to start, switch it up when you see the guy get used to it. What I usually do is make it look like I'm just throwing my usual kick, and then turn it into a teep to throw them off. Advance into a different kick or a combo. Super effective.

great video. try to stand feets in line with shoulders without any wider stance or stance(Bruce lee usually no stance, mma is used to wide stances, boxing bladed unless attacking more square). and square up (your hip parallel to opponent's hip) You will be amazed how much faster you can do kicks with both legs. Also, the push kick is good. But idea is also we can bring the front with the knees down for faster back reaction. Similar for round horse kick, it is to throw the hips up before turning. Also when retract go for the shortest distance but the feet retract to hip level and retract, the bench might not be appropriate though since need the shortest distance to return.

Hey Shane I was wondering if you could do a video on passive stretching as a martial artist. It has been shown to decrease muscle performance but on the other side it's essential for kicking... I think it's a pretty big subject so it might be worth a video... Thanks and keep up the good work man :)

World Wolf well a quick and easy way would be to hold your opponent tight to you. This also has the added benefit of neutralizing most strikes, but if they're willing to bite or claw you might have to try something else! There's almost never a perfect solution for anything in fighting, but there may be a better way than the one I suggested.

Probably more a collaboration with the TKD guy but what kicks are harder to grab ? I remember TKD spinning crescent kicks (bring your foot up in an arc across your body, head high, knee bent, from inside to outside that then slams into the floor, or reverse with a spin leading it but going outside to inside) being difficult to catch cause the momentum would carry you down. But sidekicks can be caught pretty easily. ie what kicks are safest from a street fighting perspective ?

I have kicking defense in combat aikido where a kicker will deliver any kick at any part of the body in any moment he would like to kick the aikido student; and the kick no matter how fast it is, can be caught whenever the kick is above the abdominal area or higher. The surest way to kick without the leg being caught in a kicking defense is to kick low. Hit the foreleg fast and heavy to possibly limp the opponent. A kyukushin karateka did many times in a tournament kicking the foreleg of his opponent limping them to stumble.
