In choosing videos to watch to help us learn to draw, we don't always realise that even just knowing which videos will help us is another skill in itself we need to learn. We can watch videos for a lot of different reasons, but if we are watching them to help us get our drawing to a certain place, the points in this video will be an invaluable help in equipping us to choose the very best for our purposes.

Your videos have been the single-most important resource as I dive back into drawing after being "too busy" for the past 30 years. Your approach and content have been invaluable to me.

My goal has never been to reach the level of precision and excellence of your detailed sketches, however I do enjoy watching you work on them. Same for a few other artists I love (Ian Fennelly's work). What works better for me is to emulate towards a personal goal (loose sketches with loose watercolour-- to ultimately urban sketching) are your shorter sketches (to get the essence of a scene quickly, and learning to omit excessive detail), as well as the basics-- understanding trees from your trees playlist, for example. Like you point out, I'd watch all kinds of art teaching videos-- and feel guilty at the end of it for not actually doing any artwork myself. However, following the suggestions from one of your videos a little more than a month ago, I now have a block of time set apart each weekday when my alarm goes off and I work for at least 15-20 min on some stuff that I've decided on beforehand, however, if I'm enjoying it, i have sufficient buffer time to continue with it. This has been working wonderfully for slightly more than a month now. Often i spend weeks repeating from the same reference, and so I can see what doesn't work, why, what I might do to change it, and of course the incremental improvements that I see are motivating too. And I can watch the impressive art videos (that I'll never emulate) guilt-free.

Awesome video! Its been on my mind recently that a lot of the videos I watch are only half helpful due to a lot of the things you outlined. Either they're completely digital when I use traditional, or they're super advanced and talking about things I just don't get but I i get advice that this is THE video to watch! Thanks so much for verbalizing what I've been feeling!

Thanks. There's so much out there this becomes more of a challenge every day I suspect. All the best with it.

Ah yes Stephen, I am definitely a tutorial junkie 😅! I just want to try everything! I'll be back in an urban setting next year so I want to gen up on buildings and working out either how to draw windows without losing the will to live, or represent them gesturally 🤣. Your videos are perfect for this and before I leave the UK I should take advantage of the ancient architecture that's been around me in the 40 years I've been here. I've finally found a decent portable seat to sit on so no excuse! I also want to develop a style where I focus on one aspect and then the rest is gestural and loose. I won't ever catch up with architects who are drawing huge building scenes "loosely". It's like a busman's holiday for them 🤣. When you can't beat them, do something different 🤣 - at my age anyway. Nor can I draw like the savant Stephen Wiltshire, have you seen his work?

What a great checklist. Thank you! On a side note: do you still do reviews of art 'for hire'? I wouldn't mind some feedback at some point if you do (and I can afford it :)) Since you haven't mentioned it in a while I won't be surprised if you're too busy doing drawing lesssons (or just don't want to do it). :)

Of course, we can watch whatever we want. I suppose I'm talking about understanding the issues and being able to therefore make choices more deliberately, whatever we watch. Greetings from Australia.
