The main reason I avoid tracing my pencil sketches with total exactness is that my mind begins to wander at how rote that inking procedure is and the product will reflect that as I get sloppy and distracted. So I will omit details for the inking to keep myself creatively engaged. I don’t typically use reference for my work but I enjoyed your ideas and it really rings true.
@Kemnekluglenbrigstert49 минут бұрын
Also, to avoid inking being such a high stakes event with bigger pieces, I will allow myself to stick paper corrections on over top if necessary. I rarely actually end up doing this. But just by knowing that I have a plan B, this loosens up (and speeds up) my inking and gets me closer to the result I’m going for

Hi mate, I absolutely love your work and appreciate everything you do. Thank you so much for the tutorial videos you have put together. Congratulations on your 1000th video 😊, looking forward to the new videos 😊. Teaching is not easy, it is one of the hardest profession, both my parent's were school teachers for over 40 years. You are one of best teachers 😊, thanks again.

Day 30. A milestone for me. Spent far too long trying to darken the front trees. And if I use the blurry test - ie looking at both with glasses off - I prefer my 5 minutes pre sketch because now the trees look like fur in the main drawing 😅 Interesting exercise but not necessarily the one I would pick to draw in pen completely, one for the watercolour book maybe? For me anyway. 👍 Thanks Stephen 👍

Congratulations on the posting of the 1000th video on your channel. I start each morning drinking a cup of coffee and watching a few videos on your channel. You have inspired me to start drawing in my 70’s. Looking forward to your next thousand videos.

It would be so nice if you could provide more viszualized subtext and a summary table with most important information. Especially for the long videos. Congratulations for your 1000th video
@stephentraversart24 минут бұрын
The reason I don’t is because I want people to watch the video, since I think what is said in them is helpful for drawing improvement. A summary is not a substitute for content, but I suspect it would be often used as such. On the other hand, from a learning point of view, the student making a summary of the lesson after they’ve heard it is an extremely effective learning technique. Thanks for your thoughts and kind wishes. 😀

I have to admit that I've encountered your channel year or two ago when I've started my journey with drawing and honestly 'talking head' and black&white pictures weren't as much interesting to me as other more entertaining channels. But things have changed few months ago and amount of knowledge, experience and encouragement you are presenting is enormous. I've gained a lot and I see that my drawing skill is improving. Thank you! By the way, that's the first video where I saw train on tracks behind your garden :)

Congratulations Stephen on reaching this mega milestone! I saw the number clock up to 998 yesterday 😊. Your channel is one of the go to tutorial channels I look at daily. Whenever i get the chance I share and promote your channel on Instagram as my YT channel following is miniscule. How inconvenient are the trains going by 🤣. Thank you and looking forward to syncing up and joining you on one of your Lives! Here's to another 1000 😲 videos. 🎉

Day 29. Love drawing trees and have done quite a few stylised tree drawings recently. I added a bit of the street scene as I wanted to practise giving the impression of things far away. My tree is not as dense as yours, but i didnt want to scratch about too much as i thoight I'd already got yhe light and dark captured. Thanks Stephen 👍🏻

Very interesting, Stephen. Am curious, in your journey from oils to Copics did you ever try a dip pen? With all the the various nibs available they apparently can produce quite a variety of lines. Perhaps you'd find them particularly useful in capturing your "effects?" In any case thanks for the video. Provides much to think about.

From my point of view it would be extremely helpful if you visualize your main points in form of a short summary and divide your videos into chapters. At the end of your always long explanations I often try to resume what you said at the beginning. This would strengthen the effect of your content.

One trick we do when putting tape in paper is to stick it first to our pants or short to remove some of the adhesive... But the fabric material shouldn't have too much fibers that can stick to the tape and might stain the paper. Rarely happens though.

Thank you, Stephen, This is one of your best videos. I've learned so much from you. But this video gave me a deeper layer. I'd love to point out my favorite, or most helpful part, but I guess I can't. Unless it is one of the most common lessons... keep looking at your reference. You took that direction and turned it into a complete, fleshed-out thought.

Experential reality versus the spontaneous imagination. Finding peace with your drawing along that trajectory. Do we not allow ourselves that flexibility or is rigidity with expectations better?
@stephentraversartКүн бұрын
Not at all, but aimless wandering is not always very satisfying if we have a goal, albeit a temporary one. Going with the opportunities we discover mid drawing is always an adventure, and if for some reason we can’t, we can make it the target in our next session. But I do think at the start of our drawing journey, measured targets is a great way to learn. Once we know the helpful boundaries, we can happily jump over them to great effect. Appreciate your point Marylou, a helpful contribution to the discussion 😀

Great tips! I've been going back and forth with pen and ink drawing, and the distinct challenges it creates vs. traditional painting. I've done the doodling and warm-up exercises with the mark making, and those are fine, but what I've found is that I enjoy just doing what you describe - making marks of specific subjects - from imagination. So, practice drawing various trees from memory, or even while looking out my window, and drawing mesas and desert washes, rocks, etc. I've found that as soon as I start going from an actual photo, I suddenly switch into a tighter "copy mode", and it makes it more difficult. Doing some practice thumbnails and scrap mark-making as you demonstrate/describe, is really a great transition. I also love photographing and sketching birds - I have sketchbooks full of pencil sketches and some ink overlays. Drawing skills, and the ability to draft accurate proportions in general are highly under-rated in terms of their importance to any genre of art or medium used. One only has to look at Picasso's expertly-rendered realistic drawings to see they were crucial to him later being able to "break the rules" and develop his cubist style. Even spending 10 min a day sketching from life is invaluable. Cheers, and happy drawing!

Great use of examples to illustrate your points about "warming up," and an interesting mixture of your two primary presentation modes -- actual drawing and camera-facing verbalization/discussion.
