A few examples of how I raise and live with my dogs. Obedience is great but not necessary and very overrated in dog training

It's interesting how when your dog's come up and ask for affection, you send them away. I do that too and then invite them back. I've been exploring behavior based training for a while but I still always thought I was weird for doing certain things. Glad to hear you talk about it

I'm getting ready for my puppy since January this year. I went to a dog show to see the dog in person and found an amazing breeder in Poland. I've watched almost all the videos on KZfaq regarding puppy development, training, RAW feeding, grooming, dog parks :/, etc. I'm getting my long awaited puppy in October. I've listened to many dog trainers and Larry, you are the best!!! Clear with your thoughts, successful in training, and straight to the point. Thanks for taking your time to share your experiences and educate us all !!

I saw many working dog training videos on youtube. Most of the trainers will just say "good boy". No treats, no petting, no hugging,... Working dogs were bred to love working. They only need to know when their mission has been accomplished. A little compliment will be a good reward for them. Same for humans. It is good enough to get a good grade from a class. You don't want to celebrate each time your kid gets an A in a class. Yet many kids are motivated cause they know they have "achieved" something. Of course your verbal compliment will reinforce your kids even more. "Good boy" or "Good job" or "I am proud of you". LOL

Thanks for sharing this valuable perspective. It helps to hear about successfully living with high energy, high drive dogs- not just training them. I think there may be something to the idea that we've gotten to the point of too much micro managing of our dogs around the clock (not management like crating). At the end of the day, I want a dog who is pleasant to live with when he's just being a dog. Not just under strictly controlled behavioral and environmental conditions.

Thanks, Larry. So much love your content? What’s behind the thought that “working dogs must have a job”? Quite a few people have said my dog needs protection or tracking training. I’m pretty comfortable with her just being a great pet dog. At 10 months, and she’s a GSD, she’s very good with obedience and loves training with toys, and she’s fantastic in the house. So, do I absolutely have to give her a job or will she be content forever just being a great pet? Oh, and we do exercise a lot.

There are also quite a few dogs out there that compete in obedience, sports , etc that don’t behave well in the home and the real world. Great video.

Larry, love your videos thank you. you say you dont let them out the crate ("not let loose if no one is home") if no one is home. does that apply even if you could leave them in the back yard just free and roaming? thank you for your time

How do you create the calmness in the dog with company around? Rushing to doors, demanding to be pet by throwing body or head on laps as soon as your guest sit down, constantly asking to be pet and so on?

C. Sparrow III put a leash on the dog. Use spatial pressure and a negative verbal marker to show the dog where their boundaries should be. 95% of dogs learn these things in minutes or even seconds

Hi Larry! Have you worked with small breed dogs at all? What I wouldn't give to send my Chi-Terrier mix to ya for a couple of weeks. The biggest challenge is that no matter how hard I try to enforce the need to treat him as we would a bigger dog, my kids let him get away with everything because he's little and cute. Sheesh.

Quick question for Larry. I have 2 GSD s they are 2.5 yr old in tact males. I live with mine similarly to your philosophy. Here is my question. I the morning one of them is very happy and excited he is the first to come to my bed when I get up. Then he rushes out the door then comes back maybe with a ball. The other walks with me. We have a morning routine so regardless of how much excitement the one dog has and all his rushing nothing ever changes. So is his first out the door thing indicative of a future problem? Thanks

There's a lady on KZfaq who talks about food and feeding your dog. It's the best video I seen. The title is pack leader eats first and shows the women standing in her kitchen feeding her Doberman. Worth checking out.

I totally agree to the way you keep your dogs at home. It is tidy and safe for all family members including the dog. I really need to know the best way to tell my rottweiler puppy I want him to stop doing something like don't enter that door or stop sniffing or liking the couch. She understands I'm sure she does but she is so stubborn, she stops on my command but then she keeps trying over and over. I followed many of your instructions luring her to do stuff and rewarding her good behavior. What I really need to know is how to stop her from doing stuff. And thanks Larry you're doing some great videos here giving tons of good advice. Keep it up man.

Blu3Puma put her in a crate when you can't supervise her. if she has too much energy, take her out for play first. Tired puppies are good puppies lol

The food aggression thing, man i could not agree more with you. I remember what my great grandfather always told me. Don´t mess with a sleeping dog and leave the dog the hell alone while he is eating. Absolutely true, people annoy the living shit out of their dogs while they are eating and then they wonder why the dog becomes aggressive/food possessive
@kingwillie206

Food aggression needs to be corrected during puppyhood. If not, a chicken leg can fall on the floor, a family member goes to pick it up, and the dog rips their head clean off. I try to agitate the shit out of my dogs while they are eating for the first year just to make sure no aggression exists and I have never had an issue. I pet them constantly.

I currently have a gsd 8.5 week bitch, she's a kc reg, during the day she sleeps and plays in the yard , at night she has her own room down stairs . She loves to bites , whenever she does I hold her mouth shut and blow in her nose and tell her no and then stop playing or petting her then 30secs later come back but with a toy (so she can bite in that) it sometimes works. She knows how to sit but only does it for food , and whenever there is people around she gets too excited and ignores me completley she is recently she is getting to naught . Please help me , I have invested a lot of time and money into her and want the best for her and my family , thank you

Do you feed a 8wk old puppy three times a day. And remove food till the next meal? So their bowels work approximately the same time per day. I understand you leave the food for mature dogs. But what about the potty training time? ☺💝

All of my dogs when eating I can put my hand or I can put my face down there. Cause when I 1st get them I am always around them while eating.. I just want my dogs to rust me. Except on walks all my dogs are very protective. Why I don't know . But I do tell them to leave it.

"Place Command" for hours at a time? People really do that? Wow. I am WAY TOO PERMISSIVE of a dog parent. I'm trying to change that, I recognize I've significantly created issues. Trying to change. But the opposite end of the spectrum sounds terrible.
