Midnight shifts are the best. I've managed to scam my way into permanent nights. No admin breathing down your neck, a lot less fluff interactions (im not much for small talk), you get to get creative with problem solving cause no one is around to ask. Plus on days off the grocery store is empty, no lines!

When I worked corrections. I loved nights. No administration being around. Less movement. No traffic.

Another gym location that might be available is your local high school. I’m a State cop in a small town and the principal told me she would give me a key to the high school gym for my use whenever I want. They have full weight equipment.

nightshift for 22 years and counting. love all of this info. i suggest theater blackout curtains, and radians custom molded ear plugs. very comfortable, made of silicone and can be cleaned easy, not expensive, and very effective. unless my kids jump in bed with me, i hear nothing!

"if you're working midnight shift, there's a good likelihood you're pissing people off" lol can't argue with that!

5:00 Those advices apply to all people that work nights and evenings. I'm a civilian, but i also learned that having a fixed schedule on days/nights off make your night shifts easier. Also coffeine has a half life of about 8 hours according to a doctor on an Andrew Huberman's podcast.

I've been working midnights shift (12a-8a) for 28 years. It's not easy but I enjoy it. I usually work midnight to 8 then workman extra shift outside construction / traffic details. It works for me and I am there by choice. Went to day sift for 3 years after crashing a cruiser from being exhausted. Now I've been back for the past 10 years and I'm in a groove. I've never been a coffee drinker and have no interest in starting now. Water and hydration does it for me. 😁

Working mids since the summer...went kicking and screaming as I was forced due to manning....Im not going back lol. 4 on and 4 off steady. Switching into day hours on my off set is no issue either, and works really well with little kids. I guess it all depends on your dept schedule and home life but mids are great. Not to mention not dealing with all the "busy" work and nonsense calls that day shift typically deal with. Way less accidents too which is another plus

Swede here. I sit in a Very secure bunker pushing buttons, checking emails & take occasional calls. Monitor mostly smart cameras that alerts when necessary. Kind of security, with a little more licensing etc, mostly for government installations. Coffey is best to have before 2300. Never do energy drinks. No food after midnight. I like it. We do 4 on, 4 off, 5 on, 5 off etc. With 25-35% extra pay each of the 12s on. Keep schedule most of the days, whether working or not.

The best part of working Midnights; not working Day. After about a week on Day Shaft, I start to contemplate quitting and just being a tweaker for the rest of my life.

Graveyard shift can be good. It is what you make of it. Did all of this working nights for 2 years in a row twice. Hardest part is familial issues that come with 3rd shift. That's the tough part of guys like us having a thankless profession brotha. Fortunately I no longer have that problem anymore, still miss them though. Or unfortunately depending on which way you wanna look at it. The most important people go unnoticed. Especially in the Chicagoland area where we're from. First responders are greatly undervalued. Thank you for what you do BTW. You seem to be one of the more upstanding Blue liners, like a few I've met in my tenure. Thank you for taking on such a treacherous and great responsibility. You're right up there with the armed forces

I worked overnights in security for years, and still do at my current job. It's great, no admin or managers, and things are more lively at night so it keeps me busy. I also only work 3 nights a week 12 hours so it's a lot more bearable than my previous 5 nights 11p-7a. I tend to caffeinate 2-3 times in the span of 12 hours 1 energy drink at the start of my shift, one at midnight (or a coffee) and one at 4am. By the time I'm trying to get to sleep it's been 6-7 hours since my last caffeine intake and I can sleep easily and wear noise cancelling ear buds. I Also started taking 5000 IU of vitamin D, it's done wonders for my mental state and has kept my SAD at bay

I worked as a part-time security guard on Saturdays not too long ago. I had to get up at 04:30 AM and that was really tough. I had to go to bed early on Friday evening and the weekend was much less restful in general. Not the best way to sponsor my academic career.

every 6 months we have a “draft” where officers by seniority in the division get to pick their choice of days off and shift. I started on evening watch.. Then gave midnights a try. By far the most chillest shift I’ve ever worked. The supervisors were mostly laid back and it wasn’t hard to get to calls across the city since there is no traffic. Con side… Day-watch doesn’t show up in the summer and midnights get held over. lol

caffeine and smoking can also cause strokes one day if you dont drink alot of water with them. your organs dealing with all the caffeine can lead to heart disease, keto diet kinda works to stay awake becuase carbs and sugar can cuase a crash effect that is even worse at night. i eat the carbs and sugar when i get home with magnesium glycinate to have a sick insulin crash and deep sleep. keeping busy during days off is something i didnt consider because i worked labor in a food factory and just slept all day and night on days off. Thank fully I do day now.

Great video. My hardest part about getting used to midnight shift is a majority of the people in your life still operate in the day time which makes planning events a little more difficult
