I love lunges, but feel less mind/muscle with the lateral ones. All the other ones are my besties, really get the greatest mind/muscle feels with them. So happy you are revisiting this "How to" series, love the old and new ones ❤

Thank you for noting about front lunges being difficult. I stopped doing them because they hurt on my knees too much, and if doing an online workout where they do front lunges, I would just do reverse ones instead. Walking lunges can be good, but I can only do them for a short time before my knees feel the strain.

If you want to help improve the knee strain, try a Knee Flexion PAILS RAILS drill against a wall! I have crappy service so I can’t find a link but if you search it on KZfaq it may help!

Oof, I have a love/hate relationship with lunges! This video is very handy, though, and also explains why backward lunges feel a bit better on my knees (I have a very crunchy right knee, and it doesn't like lunges that much, lol)

Reverse and especially lateral are the only lunges I really like. :3 I tried the curtsy and the front foot elevated ones for quite some time, but lateral and reverse just feel right for me! Walking lunges are fun too, however! Perfect for when you want to get toasted for absolutely no reason. 🎉

I hate lunges because my short fat legs struggle to do them and then two days later I spend half a week unable to walk downstairs without taking them sideways, and am in pain every time I move. I don't want to keep putting myself through that.

I love lunges! Its one of those movements that you quickly see improvement the more you do them. I like the offset lunge the best!

I hate lunges! I have dodgy knees, zero balance and now have a painful foot which makes reverse lunging difficult BUT doing lunges has definitely improved the muscles around my knees and has improved my knee stability so I keep doing them! Same with split squats

I like reverse lunges best. Lunges aren’t a favorite, but if I don’t do them my knees start hurting. I had pneumonia recently (I work at an elementary school and caught it there), and didn’t do strength for six weeks. My knees became really sore and stiff. They are much better now that I’m working out again, and doing mobility moves. Love the outtakes at the end!

I generally have a much easier time with side lunges compared to any other variation, but not totally sure why (maybe the glute bias you mentioned in the video?), so by default that's my favorite!

LOVED and needed this video so much Justina! I sprained my left knee a couple of years ago and since then have always felt that my right lunges (with the left knee back) have always been a problem for me. Your cue of making sure the front knee doesn't go too much over the toes has made a huge help, but I feel like I'm constantly struggling with getting the back knee to touch the floor/ that range of motion! Any advice there?

It actually sounds like a hip flexion restriction rather than a knee flexion issue from your description. Shoot me an email and I’ll send you a few things to try!

Reverse lunges! I actually anatomically can't forward lunges due to rickets/leg bowing. If I take a big step forward my foot turns in so much because of the twist in my tibias, and it has to be terrible form. So I stick with reverse, and I actually like them a lot! (hope you are having a great vacay!)

I love lunges as long as it's not HOLD. Paying attention to mind-muscle connection helps me maintain my posture doing lunges!

I’ve been doing walking lunges, but I have trouble getting the right distance on the walk portion. I frequently step too far, and then my back quad isn’t parallel with my front shin. Any tips would be appreciated! On a positive note, I’m not wobbling as much anymore 😁

Interesting, but also never again. After lunges my knees hurt for weeks afterwards. Last time I was trying to do them I think I injured something. I might be doing them wrong who knows.

Hey! It may simply be because it's an unstable exercise. I would try holding onto a dowel or chair for support to gain confidence and strength. Just keep at it!
