Thanks Greg great idea, I'm using your ideas to build drawers for the canopy on my ute. Just something that might help others, the aluminium tube is really expensive at Bunnings. I bought some from an aluminium supply place, it was a quarter of the price. I'm also using poly boat trailer slides instead of runners, lighter, cheaper and you don't lose width off the drawers. Cheers!

Hi I found 1.6mm sheet fine, The reason I did not use 2.5mm sheet was because it will add more weight and it was a lot more expensive. But it would work fine and be very strong. It comes down to your own choice. I did use 2.5mm on my camp trailer kitchen on the ends only because I had some left over and it worked out great.

Awesome job Greg, you have inspired me to make a set for my Defender. One quick question, how did you do the joint in the draws in the corners and the middle where many joint come together (Part 1, time 6:13). i.e. in the draw middle you have the draw vertical and horizontals plus the additional horizontal section which the slider attaches to. Did you use a 4 and 3 way? Cheers Luke

The draws end up slightly bigger if you use the draw slides because they are smaller then the draw sides that run on bearings that they have on the expensive sets. Check out ironman and blackwidow draws.

he ply I brought was form ply from bunnings and it cost $60 a sheet of 1.2m X 1.8m x 18mm and I had a bit left. The front ply was marine ply 12mm thick and just enough for the front of the draws. The slides you can buy on EBAY and I would buy 900mm with locks and be able to take at leased 125kg. Hope this has been helpful.

Hi Greg. Looks good. Two questions: You appear to connect the bottom metal sheeting to the bottom of the frame. Is this done by pop riveting and if so in time wont the weight to the material in the drawer force the bottom sheet away from the frame. Secondly the runners and how to fit etc. I need a bit more info on that, please.
@gregtanner7766
@gregtanner7766 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Granland Hi Ian I have attached the bottom drawer with rivets and it is heaps strong enough. I often have heavy tools and 4wd recovery gear in the draws and they have not moved. I have traveled on hundreds of kms of dirt and rough roads and the draw system is as good as the day I built it. My other vids go into the runners and how I fitted them. The rivets in the runners have not moved and the runners are still working perfectly. Thanks for your questions and all the best with your planning and build if you go that way. Greg

Morning Greg. The draws look amazing. I am looking at doing a similar project and was hoping I could ask you a few questions. 1. the easy join joints you used, are the just friction fit or do you rivet them in place? 2. Do you by any chance remember where you got the actual sliders (hinges) from? 3. How have the drawers held up over time? 4. Now that you have lived with the system for a few years are there any changes you would make? Thanks for your advice and the amazing video. Looking forward to getting started on my own system.

Thanks. Much appreciated. I notice in the back 'square' of the 25x25mm frame as well well as in the centre supports (25x25mm box) there does not appear to be the black joining sections as you have in the top and in most part of the frame. How are these parts joined together?
@gregtanner7766
@gregtanner7766 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Granland Hi Ian on the draw system I added a middle support in the draw system to give it strength using 2 x 4 ways and 2 times T joiners. I have found that over about 1000mm this gives heaps of strength. If you watch vid 2 you can see I added another box length down the side about 10mm from the base because I felt I need to support the runners. I had originally made the draws to use ball bearings that I show in vid 1 and realized runners give you a bigger and stronger draw system. Iron man draws are are good youtube to watch to see the bearing system at work. I brought roller skate bearings on ebay that would have been a lot cheaper to use then the runners. I also found that the bearings would easily take a bolt through the middle, but it would have been a lot harder to know where to position them. It would have made the draws smaller because both sides of the draw would need a length of 25mmx25mm to run the draws on loosing just over 50mm width in the draws. The extra lengths I used for the runners are only held in by the side sheets riveted through to the runners which are made and shaped for strength. If you use runners and wanted them on the bottom like mine the easy join do not have enough room to be used and if you wanted you could just rivet into the sheet, but I wanted a bit more strength and so went with the extra lengths. Thanks again for you question and I hope my answer is not to confusing. Greg

Great work Greg. you gave me the possibility to do it myself as well. in the first video you said you used 25mm x 1.6 mm (minute 2:50) but on the comment below you wrote "the 25mm square is 1.2mm thick and easy to cut with a drop saw with the normal wood blade". Is it 1.6 or 1.2mm thickness?
@gregtanner7766
@gregtanner7766 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Oliver, yes you are right, the size is 1.2mm 25x25 box. These are the only ones that will fit the easyjoin connectors. The wood drop saw works fine all you need to do is go through slowly and it makes perfect cuts. I also use a bench saw to cut my sheeting. Make sure you go slow and wear eye protection as the little shaving fly out everywhere. Greg

I would not buy the 25mm box channel there as it is very expensive. I would look for a local aluminum distributor, they would most likely have the ezy join as well and it would also be cheaper than bunnings. I paid $19 for a 6m length and required 6 lengths. The 25mm square is 1.2mm thick and easy to cut with a drop saw with the normal wood blade. I paid about $150 for a sheet of aluminum 1.2m x 2.4m x 1.2mm thick, it did the whole job. T

Just in the process of using these aluminum connect it pieces (what bunnings calls them for players at home) for a drawer setup. So far so good, just wondering, did you plant this straight to the floor of the cruiser above the vinyl or use a piece of wood to sit it on? Also google drawerslide-int.com.au for some quality drawer sliders. Got em for $46 a pair online, 125kg rated and are located in Welshpool, Perth, Western Australia.

Yes pop riverts, they are very strong, I have not had a problem with the slides even after many hours of rough tracks and corrugations. They are used in plane construction and have a good track record. If you check out some of the brand draws they use screws on the end walls and I would say a rivert is stronger than a screw. thanks for your comments. Greg

$16 for 6.5m lengths of 25.4mm square tube - Thats 4 to 5 times cheaper than Bunnings...... Not sure if Capral do the 'Connect-it' joiners though. I'm ordering some tube tomorrow.
