This video will show the step-by-step procedures of making a new 5-gallon Bokashi Bucket. I have had three Bokashi buckets, but with this winter’s long cold and snow period it has not been possible to empty the finished buckets into the compost bin, and it has become necessary to make a fourth bucket.
I purchased a 5 gallon food grade bucket from Lowes, a Gamma screw-on lid from Tractor Supply Company, and a Grit Guard from Napa Auto Parts. I had a spare plastic spigot left over from when I made the original three buckets, so I had all the parts needed to make the bucket. The Gamma screw-on lid is necessary to provide an air tight seal on the bucket to provide an environment for the Bokashi to ferment the contents. As the contents ferment, water will drain out of the contents into the bottom of the bucket. The Grit Guard holds the contents off the bottom of the bucket to hold the liquid. The plastic spigot allows draining off the liquid every day or two.
This 5 gallon Bokashi Bucket is easy to make, and easy to use. Once a bucket is completely filled, it is important to keep the bucket sealed as the contents ferments for at least two weeks. Having multiple buckets provides enough room to allow full buckets to completely ferment before having to empty them.
I use Bokashi for winter composting, when it is too cold to make hot compost outdoors. Bokashi is a pre-compost, and rapidly breaks down after it is added to the compost bin. An extra benefit of Bokashi is that once it is fully fermented varmints have no interest in the contents, and it can be added to an open compost bin without worrying about animals digging into it.
