In this video I show you how I made my spoiler board for my Ooznest Original Workbee CNC.
I walk you through the process of creating the board and attaching it to the CNC. I will also show you in depth how I used Vectric Vcarve software to create work holding points and then surfacing it to make it absolutely flat.

Hey John. I'm thinking about buying a workbee for guitar making. Have you put yours to use for this yet and how did it go? I'm wondering if 750x750 enough or if 1000x750 would be better. A video of your experiences would be fantastic.

Great job so far John. If that is as much as damage that you will to you spoil board then you are going to be golden. The first time I set my CNC up and turned it on for a test to flatten the spoil board, the CNC became possessed. Slammed down and ate through the spoil board and then and just started to moved laterally. It did no damage to the unit other than chew marks on the bed and the spoil board. It did trash the $200 bit quite nicely though. I have had my machine for six years now and have not had a repeat performance. The odd part is that I still have no idea what went wrong. I have used the same file many times since to resurface with no issues. Do you have all the files you need for a guitar yet? There is a project for quite a nice guitar neck on the Vectric website.

Thanks! I think they can be a little temperamental but that certainly sounds like you had a worse problem than me. At least I know it was my fault lol. Yes I am going to be making my own files. I will mainly be using the cnc for making templates as I still want to do a lot of it by hand.

I have another question John - My workbee is the 1000mm x 750mm version. Advised spoiler board size is 610mm x 1000mm, which I have cut and am ready to fix. The work area is 520mm x 770mm. So after surfacing the spoil board there will be a small step around the border of the spoil board. This just doesn’t sit right with me as I might have a job that requires the work piece to be clamped just outside the work area. Then again I could change the orientation of the work piece. Have you found this to be an issue?
@JohnClothier
@JohnClothier 2 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same issue. My solution is to raise the workpiece on some scraps. Far from ideal though.

Hi John, you said M6 x 13mm in the video. I read a comment on this thread and you said they are 8mm in length? I’m hoping to do similar and have found a pack of 50 in screwfix (M6x13mm) If you’d be able to confirm that would be great - I’m going to use 18mm MDF as the spoiler board...

When inserting the Threaded insert underneath the spoiler board, is there a chance they could be loosened when securing (screwing) a clamp on the top of the spoiler board? Are there a particular threaded insert that would avoid this from happening?

It is technically possible but it’s not happened to me yet. I think the grip against the mdf is very secure

@@JohnClothier thanks John. By the way, what software you're using? I got the 1500x1500 and only then realized that their recommendations of software are quite expensive. And fusion removed cam features from the personal version this year. I saw that easel and freecad seem to be able to do the job but I was wondering if there are other tools that are worth considering. Or even if the paid software are really worth it even for a hobbyist. Cheers mate
