Short video on how to make a Color Wheel for a projector, like those found in old school psychedelic light shows. The color wheel spins on a motor, and is placed in between the lens and the screen, and creates all kinds of amazing optical modulation. This is an analog method. It can be placed in front of an overhead projector, slide projector, digital projector, or any other light source.
Video has three parts:
1. Constructing the color wheel itself using lighting gels and a center flange.
2. Adding a motor and attaching it to a stand.
3. Demo of the wheel we made using a still image of Mona Lisa.

Thank you, great diy project! I'm thinking of making smaller version for 35mm slide projector and fitting cheap led lamp to have light show for sleeples nights. It would draw much less power than lcd projector and there would be no pixel grid+succulent colors!! All best in 2023

I gather it would be super sweet to layer two of those on opposing sides, moving opposing directions, would almost make a tunnel effect, though you'd need 4 of em to get a real tunnel.

I've gotten them from random places on the internet. Just have to look around. However, I have been thinking about buying them in bulk and selling kits, if there would be interest.

Are you familiar with the lighting effects used on the TV series voyage to the bottom of the sea in both the reactor room,and on the flying submarine to simulate the energy output?

@@LiquidLightLab TV series...the reactor room has a large panel on the wall showing the energy output...it used a unique color wheel effect along with what I thing were two revolving disk with oval shaped holes cut in them rotating in two different directions. I loved the effect but have never quite been able to duplicate it

Looking for the flange you used to mount the wheel. Do you know the proper name and sizes for what you used here? Thanks! 🙏🏼
@LiquidLightLab

It's called a flange. I don't remember at the moment the size, though. It is about an inch or so in diameter.

What gauge/type of electric wiring did you use to connect the driver to the motor? Ive been trying to track down the right wire...

I forget, but maybe like 16. A thinner one, there's not too much electricity that is used. It's only 12v

Hey Steve, just wondering if the motor has to be 20rpm. I looked online and found quite a few motors just like it but I couldn't find one that's 20rpm. Does it matter? Can I use a higher rpm?

It can be anything you like, but slower is usualy better.

some ppl might also want to draw out the pattern on paper first, then they know all their pieces will fit how they want em, and can trace from the paper to the gels.

Thanks for sharing! But I still have a question - what is the thickness of the plexiglass?
@LiquidLightLab
@LiquidLightLab 3 жыл бұрын
I forget at the moment, but I think one type is 1/16" and another is 1/8". Thinner one is easier to bend, but the thicker plastic refracts light better.

Hi, Steve, I prefer to use fluidity to entrance people & enhance their trip. I believe liquids move so much better than just plain colours. A liquiscope creates a much more random, unpredictable, sublime, potent fluidity that flows smoothly with more beauty. I like the brightness of the colours, the way they hug every curve they touch. I love the fact that by changeing the angle it distorts & stretches the colour formations in a totally cosmically, absorbing way. A liquiscope joins all objects & people into one living canvas & transforms everything it touches. I prefer a living life form than basically a dead one. I also like to layer inanimate discs with bright, unpredictable, ever changing, unique , spontaneous, flowing liquid, inter-changable discs. Plus, apart from randomly or deliberately adding different coloured oils & floating celluloid cutouts, it takes relatively very little time to create. Criticising you is not my intention, but I so much prefer light & colour that is quintessentially alive. But I do really like your impulsive colours & intricately designed shapes. I also appreciate the love of creating aesthetically groovy aspects to enhance the beholder`s experience. Best wishes, Don. X

DON FARQUIMI The wheel is not meant to be an element in its own, but as one tool in a palette of effects. In a proper, analog light show, multiple projectors and images are used, in addition to liquids, to create a hallucinatory, psychedelic experience.
