History and evolution of Liquid Light Show technology, from my talk at Vidicon 2020. Originally broadcast on Nov. 15, 2020. Features a lecture and slide show, beginning with overhead projectors and the pioneering artists of the 1950s and 1960s, moving on to analog video in the 1990s, and then talking about contemporary high resolution digital technology and current artists. The talk finishes with thoughts on where the medium of Liquid Light Shows may go next, including some ideas about AI and it's implications.
This was part one of my talk. Part 2 features a demonstration from my studio, of all three technologies: high resolution live video and the digital environment, analog video and synthesis, and classic old school pure analog overhead projectors and effects wheels. Part 2 is up now on my channel, along with Part 3, which was a live Q&A
Many thanks to the good people at Vidicon for inviting me, and having the opportunity to talk about this stuff! They were great and wonderful to work with.
For more information about my work and liquid light shows, check out more of my videos or head over to www.LiquidLightLab.com
Cheers,
Lil Steezy.

My older brother had a Light Show called "Spectral Euphoria" based out of the San Francisco Bay Area in the 60's and 70's. I got to help a couple of times. It was truly amazing!

What an awesome explanation of light show history! I’m going backwards right now…Picked up a vintage aluminum portable light show device 8’ open with a control box, 16 pin connecter cable, who ever made this was way out, as they have colored pan lights w rope controller, 2 motors with 5 panel mirrors that revolve horizontally, disco ball with built in motor reverse, Super strobe, 13 flash colored single shot strobe bulbs. Very old school. Not as cool as this.. but a great vintage unit that’s portable.

Thank you for making this history. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and this is very much the background of my childhood.

Just stumbled across your channel researching these techniques to do as a hobby in my spare time. Thank you for helping keep this awesome art form alive! Looks like it's time to start finding some toys to play with.

Thank you for mentioning the Pablo light show, I worked with Patrick Firpo around 1976 1977, he had a space on broom St. In Soho New York City when I knew him, he was trying to bring back the psychedelic style light show at a time when punk rock people were turning their backs on psychedelia, had he waited until the mid 80s when MTV was playing the old monkeys TV show and other psychedelic bands were being played on MTV, obviously I don't have to say it psychedelia became popular again. His partner during this Was Rudy' stern who also had a neon light gallery named "let there be neon" on West Broadway in Soho, Rudy' stern is actually one of the earliest innovators in the field , he started doing light shows without live bands just in rented spaces in the middle village around 1964 , a lot of people don't know that about him . Ultimately, he did do some live concerts with bands like the doors and The Who . the two of them teamed up, but Rudy stern soon lost interest and concentrated on his neon business. Patrick Firpo the originator of the Pablo light show with his sister Jasmine Firpo and a fellow named Kenny Conklin? who fell over one day and knocked his head on something and died in the basement of the broom St. Regardless of the fact that psychedelia wasn't popular at the time they persevered and did show for the maharishi yoga gentleman., I was going to queensboro Community College getting my associates degree in electrical technology and I repaired their circuit boards the dimmers in particular for the slide projectors and I built new Lumia discs and cylinders out of cardboard tubes and mirror plastic sheets. I don't think that Patrick Firpo and his company ever really got the credit that they deserved I think that they were just as talented as Joshua light show. I don't know if Patrick Firpo would be alive today, i sought him out on facebook, he has a there, but I did not get friended by him, Rudy stern passed away around 2005 I believe, he was a heavy smoker, wherever you two guys are Rudy and Patrick, I hope you're happy and doing light shows wherever you are

Wow, amazing! Thank you for sharing all that! Really appreciate it... Question, you said middle village, do you mean the village in Manhattan, or the actual middle village in Queens? One of the neighborhoods I grew up in was Middle Village. And now I live in the East Village.

Wow…awesome story, thanks for sharing that! Real innovators commented I picked up a portable light show unit someone made, been going through it and let me tell you they were quite mad! Lol, I put about $200. Into it to date and quite a few hours to trace wires, ect, It’s working really bright and gives quite an old school light show. We’re lucky when we experience stuff like this! Tanks friend, very cool. John,

Good amount of information, cool historical photos of shows and especially the rigs behind the shows. I saw a very interesting show at Ars Technica in Linz, Austria, circa 2007 that had operators shining a laser through soap bubbles which created really nice refracted and reflected shapes across the wall of the building, and I believe a video camera feed of that visual then somehow drove a generative (or responsive) audio system. They had to keep telling the audience to stop using camera flashes as it spoiled the lighting mood and also the sound!

A camcorder is good for a budget. After that, a prosumer video camera like the Sony A series is good too. I like the latter.
