Hi Brad, I rarely comment but just wanted to say thank you for your uploads. I’m an amateur woodworker from the UK and I love watching your videos for inspiration. I like the fact that you keep your mistakes in and explain how you overcame them. Anyone who claims to have completed a project without errors is lying! Keep up the good work.

I've been doing Shou Sugi Ban on many of my projects. A very handy technique to clean up the char is to use steel wool. I use both 00 and 0000 steel wool and the finish is simply amazing.

Always great to find a fellow Eagle Scout. Keep up the great work. A quick inexpensive tip for work with "burnt" wood. Place a thin coat of mineral oil and let set overnight before top coating. This gives the wood a "deep moisturizing" helping the wood bond tighter to the char while greatly reducing warping tendencies. It also saves money by reducing the amount of expensive top coat needed.

I've used shou sugi ban on pine for signs. Burn it, CNC it and then coats of oil poly. Love the dark brown color and worn texture.

I made a bunch of crates a couple years ago that I finished by burning over a fire pit! Going for a deep burn I basically just threw them in the fire and let them go. Definitely, my favorite way to finish wood, if you do more try brushing it with a horsehair brush and finish with hand-rubbed wax, it makes it feel amazing!

Hello everyone, I’m a new wood crafter and I’m loving this so much. It’s my favorite thing to do now besides hangout with my lady and my daughter!! I’m going to build this tomorrow just for a quick nice 1 day build and I’m also thinking of switching my channel from gaming to a wood working channel 🤔 My wood working building is almost done and I’ve been buying HELLA tools and everything I need for the last few weeks.

Brad, This looks amazing and has definitely sparked a few ideas for me! 2 things: 1) What kind of table are you using to char the wood and where did you get it? 2) I’m an Eagle Scout as well and glad to know there is another one close. Although I didn’t see a fire ring roped off....that might be a corner off of your fireman ship card 😉 Great job all around! I really enjoy your all of tour content!

I just used that same torch to char a coffee table build I'm finishing up. A quick buzz with some 220 grit paper on a random orbital sander will bring it back to a walnut-like brown and smooth out any inconsistencies from torching. It's also comforting that you can touch things up, too.
@Fixthisbuildthat

Nice. I bet 220 is pretty close to the paper towel honestly.

Good thought for the use of the shou sugi ban finish. I do a deep burn using pine to make flags, if done right you can actually get three color gradients from one stain color by letting the stain sit for 30 to 60 seconds and then wiping the bulk off. That was a nice way to hide the pocket holes for all of your side bracing.

Love the videos. Would love to see a little detailed explanation in addition to your comments of things like “water-based polyurethane” - what finish? “After sanding applied the finish” - is that the same poly or did you use stain? We’re there multiple coats of that and was anything added to it? I personally run into a lot of issues with finishing, I can never get the “commercial” results for stain, paint or poly. My work is often being tacky and very short-lasting against wear/tear. 🙏🏼

Thanks! There isn't really a comparison since the overlap is very small. Only tool I've had Ridgid that is now JET is the planer. And the JET planer is much better in my opinion since it has the segmented head and more power.
