Here is a step by step on building the finger joint jig I talked to you about in the recent "Woodworking Jointery Video" which can be seen here( • Joinery 101 with Steve... ) This jig is quick and simple to build and when set up properly it can produce outstanding results. I hope you enjoy this project

Laney hasn't posted in a few years but I gotta say I've built 4 or 5 box joint jigs and this one is absolutely the most reliable and repeatable of hem all.

Laney, first I want to say thank you for the fine work you put into your teaching videos. I'm only six months into woodworking and I appreciate the simple details you include. I'll be starting this jig project soon and a few months ago I would have been too intimidated to even attempt it. Thanks for your motivation and encouragement.

thanks Laney for making a thorough and very helpful video, great job. i just wanted to mention that i augmented mine by making it taller for more stability of longer drawers by displacing the doubled up plywood base by 5", made them narrower and set them toward the rear away from the fence. this prevented the dado blade from sawing into the structure and allowed more sled travel with repeated cuts (it always happens with repetition in my shop). also i used 1/2" board for the carriage instead of 1/4" to increase the angle of attack of the dado.keep on with the videos they are much appreciated! a guru, 40 yrs in the making, told me once: "If you get a red flag feeling-stop, take a step back, and re-evaluate...you'll retain more fingers that way"

Took a long time to get through it all, but that was a wonderful explanation, Laney! I have been struggling to find a good tutorial that would help me with building a jig with micro-adjustment. The one jig that I tried to build was not adjustable, and I only learned after building it that I was maybe 1/32" off, but that was enough to make it useless. Thanks for taking the time to put this video out.

I appreciate all of the talking and in depth explanation you give. I am kind of new at this and I have to watch some parts over and over as it is. If the guys who don't need all the explaining are so good at this then why do they need to watch your video on making a "simple" box joint jig. They should already know how. Your videos are very good...

Well now Sonny I watched both parts to the very end, oh You are so good and show it all with the smallest msmts and safety in mind. I will try to follow it but I am not so well organised as You and a bit much older at 80y but still enjoying a bit of woodworking. The fine stuff I have to relearn and get the confidence back. I lost it with being scared of Routers!

Just wanted you to know that after watching this video I had to build 1. Its not half as complicated as that crazy advanced finger joint jig and it does just as good of a job i'm sure. Also I rigged up two 1/4" strips on the opposite end of the micro adjust screw and drilled 4 holes and put in 4 springs so that my adjust screw is always up against the stop when im not adjusting it. Just thought I would share that with you and your fans (me being 1 of them). Good job bro...Keep them coming.

Hi Laney, long time fan of your channel - great content, easy to understand for a novice like myself, keep up the fantastic work mate (yes from Australia). Finally got around to making this jig and after doubting my abilities as a relative beginner with basic workshop equipment, what can I say - it worked out flawlessly!! That extra time in setup in making and setting the keys paid off for sure. I'm very proud of my jig, thanks again for the great advice and build video. Cheers

I built a very slightly different version of this without the micro adjuster, but it works great. I've been fiddling with several other types never getting one that remained consistent, but this one is fantastic. Thanks for the video. I need to fix the adjustment bolt holes, but that's easy stuff. I ran out of adjustment to one side.

I did not see a comment box so I am using the reply of this comment. This is a great Jig and I will make one for myself as well. I do have two suggestions on how to "improve and simplify" this jig. The replaceable base of the jig witht he various keys should use threaded inserts to assure long use of the jig and ease of use. Second suggestion is why not make the replaceable middle insert a little wider and accommodate the various keys making it much easier to switch sizes.

Awesome video Laney. I need to do this for an afternoon project. One safety suggestion is to use a handled push pad on all cuts. Having your hand between the fence and the blade should never be done and scares me just looking at that. I like the bigger push assembly that you do use in another portion of the video
@LaneyShaughnessy

Jimmy, if the joints aren't lining up and getting bigger it sounds like the pieces may be ever so slightly moving when being cut. a firm grip or even clamping for each cut may help. also make sure your fence bolts are tight and there is no movement of the front fence when cutting.
@lleevveell66

I think that the purpose of only screwing the sides into the top board of the sled is so that it will pull those sides to a very slight angle, which tightens the entire thing up in your slots, eliminating any wiggle.

Brilliant explanation of how to build the jig. And, I like your explanations. Gives me time to digest the info. Question: you said to trim the fence to the top of the supports. Is this for esthetic reasons or something else? I am planning on building this jig to construct some boxes that have longer side rails and I would think that a higher fence may give me more stability. Thanks!

Hi Laney. I don't have a Dado Blade but really like the video and want to build the jig. You mentioned that you were going to maybe make another jig so I can make the box joint. Are you going to do this jig soon ? I really don't want to spend 80.00 dollars on a Dado blade. I am retired and don't have the extra funds. Thanks, Marty

I have a lot of scrap wood laying around. Does the base (two side handles piece and the two bottom piece you screwed together need to be thick? The pieces I have are 1/2" thick plywood. I'm only planning on doing 1/4" and 3/8" inch dado cuts.

Nope not really.. Just pre drill the MDF because the sides like to split, and you want the back fence to be secure to the body of the base, also the micro adjustment screw on the side which you will see in part 2.. maybe a threaded insert for it.. or just predrill..

I found this useful, but had to get past the constantly rambling and repetitive commentary. The video tends to say the same thing over and over. It repeats itself. It kind of reiterates the point till you want to shoot yourself. The same thing is said a number of times in different ways. But nevertheless and even so as a beginner I find this is a useful explanation of making a box joint jig, so thanks. I am sure the videos will get better with time, and I will try to follow.

Way too much gibbering. In addition, there was no indication of how this jig functioned, how it was to be operated, whether with single blade or dado or whether it could accomodate different size pins. Absolutely no information or demonstration. This is essential to be shown FIRST - then a precise walk through.
