I used my 18 gauge narrow crown staple gun 1.5" staples takes me about a minute or two to drive about 100 staples, also used dried cactus trunks don't need to hollow them out, but I'm still experimenting on placement and number of staples for sound and length of rain and different grains, one of my favorite sounds is chicken scratch!

That's pretty interesting use of a staple gun. And I think the dried cactus were the original rain sticks. I'm told the Indians would drive the thorns back into the cactus to trickle the corn or beans.

What grains did you find worked the best? Would corn work? Maybe bean seeds? Does it have to be smaller? I am thinking about using pea gravel.

This is the second video I watched about making a rain stick. The other youtuber used nails instead of skewers. She used birdshot instead of seeds. I like your rainstick better. Keep reading if you want to know my idea. I am thinking of splitting a long straight stick long ways, hallowing out the inside, then gluing it back together. I am thinking of using pea stones(tiny peebles) inside. Am I crazy for wanting to use wood instead of bamboo? It's going to be way more work, but I already have plenty of long sticks the right diameter. If I ruin one, it can be used for firewood. I think I could hallow it out with my router.

Shoot yeah, go for it. It won't sound the same but it will be a fun rain stick. I would guess the trick would be to make the stick walls thin enough so you can hear the 'rain'. Bamboo is really dense and transmits the sound kind of like glass or tiny would. And you're right, it does sound like a lot of work! Good luck.

@jerrykyle Bamboo is of musical. There is a tree farm that uses long bamboos to make their trees grow straight, and when the wind blows, it makes an eerie sound.

Did you put the skewers all the way to the other side?
@jerrykyle

Yes - sticking out the other side, and with a drop of Elmer's wood glue. Then just cut then off flush and after you're all done sand them down flush

Thanks for the tutorial, exactly what I was looking for. One question: is there a reason you used the little wooden skewers instead of nails? Would nails change the sound? Thanks in advance!

Hi Forrest, Yes, I used wooden skewer sticks because they were easy to snip off, glue in with a drop of wood glue and then sand down flush with the bamboo tube. Nails would indeed make a different sound - might be kind of cool. If you try it, let me know how it turns out.
