Easily make a 20-second long playing rain stick from bamboo.
This rain stick cost about $13 in materials to make. It is made from a 40" piece of bamboo, about 2" in diameter and plays a long, eleven seconds turned straight upside down or about twenty seconds turned at an angle and rolled while playing. There's a photo of what the inside of the tube looks like during construction, and there is a follow-up video with a materials list, hole drilling diagrams and more tips on making long playing sticks called "How To Make a Rain Stick - Part II". The trick in a long playing rain stick, whatever size you choose, is in the HOLE DRILLING PATTERNS. A spiral pattern is NOT best because it allows only half the number of holes you can make and it creates an impenetrably dense core. See the second video ("How to make a long playing rain stick (Part II))" for the secret to a really long playing rain stick.

Thanks for sharing this. I've had some bamboo for about a year, and just scored a dozen or so more pieces to experiment with (my wife woin't let me have hers!). I make other instruments, but no rainsticks yet... you probably just improved my learning curve.

Nice video! Thanks for the lesson.you can also mount skins on either end instead of plugs and get a thunder effect at the beginning of each rain.

Hi Anthony - You don't need me to make you a rain stick. You can make one yourself. Just drill lots of holes - the more you drill the longer it will play. And, very important trick I found was to wrap the bamboo in duct tape before drilling holes! It keeps the drill bit from splintering the bamboo when it pokes out the far side. After you've finished drilling the holes and glueing in and clipping the wooden shish kabob sticks, you can remove the tape to paint and decorate the bamboo. Good luck!! :)

BTW, I would be very interested to know if any of you all have made one and how they turned out. A couple things not in the video - 1) don't use green bamboo, it will develop splits and cracks as it dries out. Find a tube already dry and crack free. And 2) bigger is not necessarily better. I would stick to diameters of tubes from around one and a half inches to two and a half. Larger diameters require too many holes and skewers to impede the flow of the rice or beans. Also, if you're interested in hole patterns and a few more technical details, I have a "How to make a long playing rain stick Part 2" that gives that information. Thank all of you for your nice comments!

nice tutorial! One question i have though. I have made these in the past, but always drilled the holes in a uniform spiral pattern around the tube. It seems you are doing yours at random. Does this randomness of the skewers have anything to do with the long rain time, and the sound? Thanks! keep up the great work.

Sorry to bother you “this late”. Do your bamboos come hollowed out or do you have to hollow out yourself? I’m having issues finding something long to hollow out bamboo culms. Do you have tips on doing just that?
@jerrykyle
@jerrykyle 5 жыл бұрын
YukiSoba All bamboo has connective discs inside every foot or so. You need to break these out or drill them out to make the bamboo tube hollow. They are not real thick and you can either hammer them out with a long rod or buy a long drill bit extender at the hardware store. The longer your bamboo stick is, the harder it is to get to the discs furthest in. That's why a three foot rain stick was kind of my limit. good luck!

Hi Adam, Larger diameter like marbles? Very cool idea, I think you should make one and put it on KZfaq to share with us. It would be a first. The rain stick, after all, is more of a musical instrument than a rainmaker and can be whatever you want it to be. I was actually thinking about doing a smaller one with nails instead of wooden skewers and BB's instead of beans. What do YOU think?

Hey awesome video well done. I saw your one comment about not using larger diameter holes, reason being you'd need to drill into it too much just to slow the flow of the rice/beans. I was thinking what if you used a larger diameter item to put inside. It wouldn't really sound like rain, but I think it could sound really cool. What are your thoughts on that? Also, what do you think of the idea of instead of a solid plug on the end, putting some kind of screen mesh where the holes are just small enough prevent the rice/beans from falling out, and then on the end you also put a cone on it, similar in shape to a lamp shade. My thinking is this might act as a speaker so it would be louder. It might make a mess if dust starts spilling out though.

adam maxon Hey Adam, the field on rain stick making is wide open! There is no right or wrong, just whatever floats your boat. Try it. And film it. And if it works, upload to KZfaq - that's what everyone else does! :)

Hi Teresa, I'm not sure I understand your question. The bamboo originally has membranes inside that need to be broken and removed so the bamboo is completely hollow. I do this with any long stick or rod and a hammer to knock them out. To keep the beans inside from falling out, I cut a round plug out of any board and tap it in tightly so it will not fall out. Does this answer your question?

Third video I've watched for rainsticks,third one ruined by terrible music instead of just showcasing the sound of the rainstick it's self. I've got to wonder why everyone thinks adding a distraction from what they're making a video for is good idea..
