I had a few left over lengths of 2 x 4 Wood from a project and so decided to make a quick and simple Stand for my Mountain Bike. This works great at keeping the Bike still so that you can easily work on it for general maintenance. You can make this stand to suit any size of Wheel and any Tire thickness.

Notice your comments earlier regarding the possibility of damage to the wheel if any force is applied to the bike while in the stand. I'm looking at making something similar with slightly deeper rails to support the wheel to store my MTB in our conservatory at home. Bike shops seem to use similar stands from what I've seen.
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 10 ай бұрын
Yea I don't think it would damage the wheel unless you have very thin tyres like road tyres and happen to fall into the bike while it's on the stand. Making it deeper should make it even more sturdy I would imagine.

Well done, do you think this stand could act as a space saver? Could you stand the bike or have it lean against a wall while the front or back tire sits in your well made stand? Could you try and report if the stand stays still and not slide anywhere?
@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
The stand does stay still. However, I would not recommend storing your bike in one because if you bike is bumped into while in the stand, this could damage the wheel due to the amount of leverage that could be put through the frame into the wheel. It is better as a temporary stand while working.

@PhillWyattProjects
@PhillWyattProjects 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point Lester. I would say that for a mountain bike probably not. But I would not recommend this for a road bike. As long as you don't knock the bike while it is in the stand, then there is no movement as it is balanced.

This is a very good idea and .i made this ,but found that my bike hung to the side quite alot.probably because my wheel size is 29 inches.so increased the sides , but still hung over to the side,I was worried about twisting the alloy wheel.So.what I did was inserted an aluminium pipe, I came across. Its about 2 feet in length.glued and screwed in at an angle ,so when th bike sits in the frame,it almost touches the quick release bar....found a small plastic.pipe cut a peice off about 3 inches to length. Inserted it on the aluminium pipe.so when the bike sits in the frame, pull up the plastic pipe and connect it to the quick release bar......hope that helps ,if you have the same problems........

I was thinking of buying a cheap one on Amazon for $25. I have spare 2X4 wood. After watching this video, I’m pretty sure I’m just going to buy the $25 one on Amazon 😅

thank you. i had some pvc pipe and small square of plywood available so i made a small footrprint stand for my mtb. The slot in the pipe is for the non drive side spindle to slide down and the pipe holds a crank. Looks like my pedal has to be vertical because the small pipe i used has very thick walls. Pretty slick though. I think it sits on the outer cup of the left bb so i'm not sure i like this but i might carve out a notch for it. Very easy to move the stand and it's small. I don't like how the pipe attaches to the plywood so i added some wooden braces but it's still not perfect. As long as the bike is mostly vertical shouldn't need much though. I built a round stand from a useless rounded desk i cut up. For my 3rd and last bike i will prob build your stand. One I liked had a slightly longer lengthwise wood and shorter cross wood. 22" and 16". I think i'd like to use some threaded rod and bolts to move one side so that i can use it for different widths of tires? And a longer lengthwise piece will probably work better for bigger wheels?

@@PhillWyattProjects I have been using this pvc version for a few weeks, works well. When the bikes are close together it is a bit of a pain, so not the best for sliding a bike between bikes, best to have one side open so you can stand beside you bike when you slot it in. And as expected the demo was static, when things are moving around my base (which was bigger than the demo) can make the bike tip over since an mtb is heavy. If i just pick everything up and position it slightly it works fine. End result is it's is a low profile highly efficient way to go. And i did tape some thin left over packing foam over the contact areas at the top of the pvc. Too bad we can't post pics because that would have made the explanation shorter ;-)

@@alutious Yea I was going to say the same thing it's a shame we can't show pics would be interesting to see. I am planning on making another bike stand but this time one that is free standing which the bike frame hangs on. I think people will hopefully find it useful.

Glue not needed! Screws are more than strong enuff...I am architekt Each crew can handle 200lbs each and 2 is plenty! Spray paint is 10X faster...

Yes the glue is not essential. I glue and screw practically everything it's a habit. I didn't have any spray paint at the time. Doesn't need to be painted anyway.

Cheap great idea for a movable stand.like it. Engineering wise, pilot holes are for the screw threads, transition or clearance holes are for the shank of the bolt or screw, many projects fail on split wood due to no pilot hole drilled for the screw thread, hardwoods are more forgiving but most softwoods will simply split if the thread is too big for the hole...
