Dear Prince last 3 months I lost a few big Astrophytums with almost similar problem. Very sad yet don't know what was the reason. Hope to hear your input. Condition: turn brown, soft from bottom. 2 of them cracked at the spine. One didn't. I stay in KL and in condominium. These astrophytum were expose to sun just behind the window. Hope to hear from u. Vermiculite holds water and does not improve drainage.

I just go with sand from the forest and add some rock from construction site to make concrete and some dirt from the garden. works perfectly. There is no chance to get all your ingredients :/
