How To Make Band Saw Wheels from Plywood

The wheels are made from two layers of 1/2" Baltic birch plywood, plus hubs for the lower drive shaft and upper bearings. Plywood has durability and strength but the varying density makes it more difficult to balance. A better choice would be particle board, but I didn't have any on hand and I didn't want to buy a full sheet just for this.
I sized the wheels so that when the tires are put on the total diameter will be 12"

Love the bandsaw, no reason why it should not become a hit. ( In the woodworkers or diy communion). 👍 Specialy the tension is unique for a homemade one.

I know you stated on your other channel that you were still undecided about selling the plans for this on your website. I really hope you eventually do. As much as I like the Wandel bandsaw, the required equipment needed to build it is a bit more than many have. I like that yours can be built by someone who has a very basic setup. It is almost like a "step 2" project, after a table saw, that will launch you into building all of the other projects. P.S. I love the aesthetic you've created lately. The tools are as beautiful as they are functional.

Very good job Mr. Heisz. Today it is not profitable to build one of those saws, unless you have remnants from another project. Only, (to start with something), the price of wood is through the roof. In any case, his work method is highly professional and detailed. I like it a lot.

At meat lockers they use band saws to break down the beef carcasses into manageable pieces. It was my job to clean all the utensils, so I know how to take a band saw apart and put it back together. Never seen one made from scratch like this before though.

Did I see correctly? The edge of the wheels holding the blade is convex and not concave? Other than my confusion, it looks great.

Nice. I was wondering though, I noticed you balanced the wheels then did a bunch of stuff to them. Would all those changes that not affect the balance of the wheels or is it insignificant?

Hi John, great vid as always.. Really hope you put out plans for this once complete.. at the moment it's a toss up between yours and Matthais' designs to replace the 500 Dollar P.O.S. thing I mistakenly purchased a couple of years ago from my local hardware store. (for those in Australia, avoid, at all costs, the Full Boar brand bandsaw, it's utter shjite!)

BTW, I wonder if those industrial sewing machine DC motors with speed controller would work fine for this application. I've seen people using them on benchtop drill presses replacing the original weaker (1/3 to 1/2 HP) motors and those things seem to have plenty of torque, at least for drill press usage.

So after balancing the wheels by drilling holes and or adding screws, did you not then make more holes to attach that second idea to align the wheels?

Most of the material from that hole will have compressed into the wood. A tiny portion would have come out. You’re right, but I reckon the impact would’ve been within his margin of error for balancing it anyway.

Its gonna be sweet John. Unrelated question. You use a lot of PL, how do you keep the tube from drying out after you open it? I often wish they made it in smaller squeeze tubes because I end up with a lot of half tubes that dry out before I can use.it again. Thanks for the video.

I don't know how John does it, but I'll tell you how I do it. I get a big drywall screw, the coarsest I can find, and push it into the end of the tube. Then I take several layers of plastic bag and put that over the screw and the cut end of the tube, and wrap that all well with electrical tape, to make the most airtight seal possible. But undoubtably, when reopening it, there will have been some air leakage and there is a small plug of dried PL at the end, so I grab the drywall screw with a pair of vise-grips and just yank it out. Most of the time that will pull out the entire plug, but if not, I saw the head off another long coarse drywall screw, chuck it up in my drill, and use that as a sort of spinning reamer to pull the remaining chunks of dried glue out of the passageway. 99% of the time, that solves it.

@@jimthesoundman8641 thanks Jim. I've tried the screw method before with tape but don't know if I used plastic with it. Normally I just let it dry into a plug then just cut the tip lower. Its not ideal because you get a gigantic opening. It also sometimes dries the whole thing out depending on how much is left. I've also tried those store bought plugs... they don't work. We can put a man on the moon but can't make a resealable caulking tube : ) Thanks for the idea
