How to make Bokashi without bran | Bokashi Composting Starter | Low Waste Living | Sydney Tay

This is a short tutorial on how I made my bokashi starter (EMA), without bran. It is very easy and convenient to make in just a few minutes!
EMA recipe (by Dig Up London)
Makes 2L EMA
1 non airtight Glass container
100ml EM-1 solution
100ml Molasses
1.8L Tap water

I like how it creates less packaging waste than conventional ready made bokashi bran. Also it saves up a lot of space, and shipping cost, as each bottle of 1L EM-1 and Molasses is able to last up to 10 months! Most importatntly, I got same result of successful bokashi bin using EMA :)

I've bought a load of bran already but would it be okay to use the spray as well? Thank you for the great videos. Can I ask - is EM 1 basically Lactic Acid Bacteria? Sorry to ask questions I am very new at this composting/gardening work❤

For weather and temperature in Malaysia(humid and hot, 28-33°C), the EM is active around 3 weeks. If you have colder or drier climate, you might want to experiment around to see how long will the EM survive. Hope this helps!

Ah yes this 😂😂 I will clean the spray bottle once in a while to unclog the residue, all good to go again :)

Hello, both are ok. For plastic, I'll recommend a thicker type for an extra sturdiness. Just rmb to open the cap from time to time, and let the gas flow to avoid trapping the gas in the containers, as it could be dangerous

Finally I found your video use EM for bokashi bin, just would to check to can I use plastic bottles instead of glass ? I saw your video fill full of water? Will get general 'gas' ? It's need leave some space? Will it need to open everyday (like doing enzyme). Thanks in advance .

Of course! You can use any container you want, just make sure it is not air-tight (just leave it loosely screw) as the EM needs air flow to grow, and to prevent bursting when air is generated. You don't necessarily need to open it everyday, just check them out a few days at first, once you're familiar with how it works, you can leave it :)

Can 100ml of Bokashi Tea be used as a substitute for the EM?

Hi! I don't recommend using Bokashi tea as a direct substitute to EM1, as the microbes are probably different/less than EM1, so there might be a risk to failed on activating the EM. However, I've found a way for you if you really want to use the tea as a spray to your bin. Start each bucket with “real” bokashi bran/spray in order to retain a good balance of bokashi microbes in the process. (Source: bokashiworld.blog/learn/faq/)

Hi! Yes, you can use this to spray on your food waste for fermentation (bokashi) You can also spray it to your compost pile to speed up the process!

Dear Sydney, I am very interested in your Bokashi spay solution? The ingredients is EM-1 100ml and Molasses 100ml and what? (What is in Jar or bottle? Its is a tea from Bokashi tank? If its tea, how much ml?

I think it's just some residue from molasses, she did use the same measuring jug, right?..then just add 1.8L of water as shown in the video

@@yoriichi3347 it worked for me ☺️☺️ if you had doubt you can always leave the tap water for a few days for the chlorine to evaporate before using it Or you can just use rain water! The microbes will love it

You can boil the water to remove chlorine, or just let it sit for a day or two
