I hope you don't mind another tip but in my opinion when making textiles make one end rounded arched in other words because a nice round ark will display splitting from too much. That's obviously something you want to test for with a new clay body recipe and sometimes a square tile will come out perfect you will still be able to measure shrinkage but will not show the cracking as easily

Can I give you a tip on mixing clays. I do it by 5 gallon buckets but I understand you're doing a test batch. The best way I have found is make them into a slip a slurry that's very thin everything gets mixed a thousand times. This particular recipe with only three components is not that big of a deal. But I'm telling you if you let it sit in a little bucket with a fan blowing over the top it only takes a couple days to get into a workable consistency that you can fold out onto a plaster or to get to the right consistency. I do all my clay reclaiming the same way I have 20 buckets at least full of slip in various stages of thickness and there's always one ready to pour out onto a a slab and there's almost no work to it at all. I mean the only thing I do is when I'm walking by I grabbed my mixing drill and turn it up a little. It basically mixes itself

Thanks 😊, I want to start doing food safe pottery, no already made clay available locally for pottery here, my goal is stoneware clay, there's a clay mine close by, they are exporting dry clay, wanted to know how can I test this local clay to determine how much other material I should combine with it to reach a good level of stoneware clay, any instructions? I am afraid of damaging my kiln, that's why I don't try things to find out yet😅 Someone proposed to use glass glaze on the locally available clay for kitchenware (mugs, pots, bowls, plates,...), he said not necessary to use stoneware clay, what do you think, is that safe? Or will it work?, the one who proposed is making ceramic tiles for mosques, so I don't know if his opinion is good to consider on kitchenware!

Thank you for sharing this! Beautifully done. The clay looks pretty sticky before it "dries" for a while on the plaster. Is that accurate? I have some that I made and it was very sticky and I am trying to figure out how to fix that.
@UmiCeramics
@UmiCeramics Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you! it's completely normal, it's difficult to calculate the exact amount of water it needs. The plaster is porous and will absorb the excess moisture from the clay. But you can try adding less water, more slowly

Hi, for this same formula you can try using ball clay, it's highly plastic (although not as plastic as APM clay) and its final colour is white/slightly beige

Lindo video. Se puede hacer ollas o cazuelas de barro con esta fórmula? Gracias por su respuesta. Nueva suscríptora
@UmiCeramics
@UmiCeramics 2 жыл бұрын
Hola! Gracias♥!

Can you please tell me how to make a black colour stoneware clay body like this one is brown. Should we add black stains? Sorry I'm still using someone else's clay body and I find it difficult when it comes to glaze I have problems with shrinkage where the clay body doesn't match with my glaze shrinkage. Can you please help me out. Sorry if this is a useless question but I'm quite in trouble with my clay bodies and glaze recipes.

Hi! I have only made low temperature black clay (using manganese) but I don't know any formula to make black stoneware. Does your glaze crack? if so... you can try adding quartz to it!

However one ingredient I used was different from yours so the clay body colour is different. In place of pink clay I used china ball clay (a grey colour when in dry form ) which is used instead of pink clays in my country.

Hi sorry, me again, in regards to your apm "pink clay" is there another name for it , I have tried googling apm clay, but nothing comes up that resembles powder clay, just some kiln element. Again sorry , I'm still trying to learn lol thanks again
@UmiCeramics
@UmiCeramics Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your messages. Unfortunately APM clay is not available in all countries, In that case you can modify this formula and replace it with a local clay. For example... you could use ball clay instead, and add some pigments to get a nice brown colour (no more than 10% above the formula) and test the results! (porosity, shrinkage, flexibility) I hope my answer is helpful!
@g83channel95
@g83channel95 Жыл бұрын
@@UmiCeramics thank you very much for both of your replies, I live in the UK, so I will search for ball clay, when you talk about the , no more than 10% of the formula, do you mean regarding adding the pigment. And one last thing, does it matter what colour your clay is ? For example, if I have a brown clay, is it still possible to glaze it white ? Or would it be best to use a white clay. Excuse all the question lol
@UmiCeramics
@UmiCeramics Жыл бұрын
@@g83channel95 Let's say you add the pigments at the end...so... for example: if you made 1 kg of paste (without water), I recommend adding only up to 100 grams of pigment. (A white glaze over a brown clay will probably look a bit gray, that will depend on the effect you want to create)
