Many years ago (about 30) I made a tea from what we in Texas call 'bull nettle', a stinging nettle. I gathered enough to fill a 50 gallon barrel. I decided that it is ready when it smells so bad flies won't land on it. Oh man! It was rank!! I diluted it 10:1 and applied to tomatoes in my market garden. Those plants were amazingly healthy and productive!

Also great way to get the kids in to shower for bedtime... just fill up one bucket with the tea, approach wild preoccupied unsuspecting children... pivot your pitching foot forward and thrust the bucket forward at said children. The trick is to keep your back straight and your eyes on the target.

I wanted to tell you how you have inspired me. I raise ducks and geese on my tiny permaculture homestead in the far northwest corner of the continental USA. When they were tiny ducklings and goslings, I referred to them as 'lings and continue to do so now that they are 18 months old. There are 7 geese and 17 ducks. The 'lings love comfrey (and most greens). They also love chopped veggies floating in their pools and tubs of water. Today, for the first time, I gathered a couple of armfuls of fresh comfrey and threw it in several pools and tubs of fresh water. There must be many bathing containers because of the strict but dynamic pecking order. Each newly filled tub is christened by the highest ranking birds, and then open for the general public. One would have thought they were in paradise or perhaps at a Roman orgy. Plenty of dining and bathing, ecstatic flapping and cavorting, and bird coupling all across the yard. Crazy birds jumping out of the water to run around like mad dogs, then jumping back into another leafy pool. There was so much comfrey that much of it floated in the water all day. Late in the afternoon, I removed the stalks from the water and left the leaf filets. By the time I went out to put them up for the night, there were very few comfrey ribs on the ground or leaves left in the dark chocolate-colored water. They apparently love comfrey soup, vastly preferring it to the fresh water I poured for them at bedtime. The majority of this took place over the thick layer of "hog fuel" wood chips in the aviary dooryard; I hope the worms are enjoying the comfrey soup as much as the 'lings did.

I only just discovered your channel and I love it. I am planning a big move soon, from the Arizona desert to Oklahoma. I am trying to plan a head and learn the best way to start a sustainable garden when I get there. This will be new to me as I've only grown a small container garden here. I am told the soil where I'm moving is very clay filled, so I'm thinking raised beds might be the best option. Plus, the winters are very cold there. I'll be arriving late February. Any advise you might have for me would be greatly appreciated. I want to start composting for the first time. I'm doing research at this time, studying different methods. I'd like to thank you for such an informative blog & video series.

Local advice from passionate gardeners is gold!

Thank you Morag for this inspiring video. I followed these simple instructions and my tea is now almost 7 weeks old. I have started to use it in my gardens as you mentioned with the 10-1 dilution and the plants are happier as a result. I am wondering how often I can water in this way with a watering can? Once a week? More or less? Also, I do have some flies and larva in my container of comfrey tea even though I have mostly kept the lid on. Is this something to be concerned about? A friend asked if I should have a bubbler in it to prevent it from going bad? How would I know if it was not viable anymore? How long can I use it? Is it better with age or should I use it all by a certain number of weeks? It is very hot this summer in North America where I live in Ohio. Thanks for sharing, I would love a follow up video as I see I’m not the only one with similar questions.

Good morning. This is not a house for mosquitos? I have a little planst here and there that I call garden. But the truth is I don't know nothing about it. I like your videos. I recently found you looking for a video that help me "convert" an area covering by grass in my front yard to a little flower garden. I was looking the way to kill the grass easy and fast. I am living in Wisconsin USA. I want to give time to the plants to recovering before the cild water come. I dig the area and flip the grass, put some "round up" to kill it. I don't know if this is working yet. But today I want to try the newspaper. I wet the soil that is flip and later I want to turn the grass face it up; put the newspaper. I don't really know what I am doing. My question. I am doing something right? Am I in the right direction? Or I messed everything up. I will try to do what you do in your garden. For now I don't have any of the materials or plants that you have. I know takes time to build what you have. I will start maybe in two years I will see results not like yours but some.

I would wait at least several months, if not a year before I start propagating. This gives the plant time to get a substantial root system developed and you will be able to get many plants. You can store the roots for a little while - longer if you store them in a bucket of sand.

It would be good to add lots of comfrey leaves in to the soil as you are making the garden. I also add lots into the compost heap - it helps to activate it. Comfrey is a pretty robust plant that will improve the soil around itself. I'm not sure where you live, but possibly it could be that the plant is in it's more dormant phase. In winter here it doesn't grow much and a frost will know it right back. As soon as it warms up though, it comes right back as strong as ever. I find mine grow well in both sun and partial shade.

Do you need a 'bubbler' aerator to keep the tea from rotting?
@ChristopherJones16
@ChristopherJones16 4 жыл бұрын
Do bubblers keep stuff from rotting? I would think adding in air would help with it since it brings in more air to help break down the plant, and feed organisms/bacteria. After all air is what causes everything including us to rot... (air tight in a vacuum container(no air) is what prevents rot)
@JWHealing
@JWHealing Жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherJones16 What people say who make videos on aerated worm compost tea is that adding all the air with a bubbler during the brewing means that you are increasing the aerobic bacteria which is more beneficial for your soil. They say the anaerobic bacteria is what stinks so bad and that is what grows in teas that have no bubbler and are made just by closing the lid and waiting. They say that some anaerobic bacteria are not beneficial for your plants and could be harmful. They say that increasing aerobic bacteria is ideal. I am trying to find people who discuss aerated comfrey tea but not having much luck yet.

Hi, I am an athlete who trains 3- 5 hours per day, 6 days/week. I would like to use comfrey to help me heal/recovery faster after workouts. How much dried sifted/cut comfrey leaf and/or root can I ingest per day to recover/heal faster after extremely hard workouts(i train for the decathlon) and also to prevent injuries? Also, how much can a non athlete person take to aid in healing? I read a story of a woman with cancer who went on a indian reservation and an indian elders told her to eat 3- 4 fresh leaves of comfrey per day and she was healed of cancer in a few weeks.. I guess if it heals cancer it should be safe for the liver as well .. also read stories of how it heals the liver... its kind of weird this liver damaging propaganda..

Hi, Thanks for writing. I don't feel qualified to answer your question. I think perhaps a naturopath/herbalist would be better suited to answer. I think it's a marvellous plant and I do eat a leaf a day, but I am not saying this as a formal recommendation. Regards, Morag Have you read the information from Isabel Shippard herbsarespecial.com.au/plant-information/herb-information/comfrey/

do u eat a leaf every day, without taking brakes? i guess 1 fresh leaf would equal about 1 teaspoon of dried leaf..i have no access to fresh :(...since when do u eat one per day? why did u start eating it? did it heal anything for you? what did u notice since eating it daily?

@@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife I thank you soooooo much for this article link! I, too, have been hoodwinked by all the bad press about comfrey. And this article really opened my eyes! I'm in NY state, USA, and have comfrey growing on side of the road, by an old farm. Years ago l dug some roots and brought and planted in my yard. I do not know its variety. .. Does that matter? It grows tall 3-4+ feet, with wide leaves and purple flowers. I then acquired another purple flowered one - grows thinner leaves and not as tall or dark green. Can both be used the same?

I use comfrey leaves to make a salve and it has fixed many an ailment for my mates. HOWEVER - these days, the consistent advice is that you should NEVER take it internally - unless you want some liver damage on the side. The alkaloids within the plant are simply no good for your insides. But I do find it to be the best pain reliever I have ever used and I remember my gym, many years ago, calling it knitbone because it assisted fractures. Please DO NOT ingest it - all comfrey plants actually have that stated on their labels these days.

I am trying to locate comfrey plants, no luck so far. Holy smokes, hands of steel...I have never seen anyone, men included who handle comfrey without gloves because of the stickery hairs that irritate the skin!!
