This homemade Dutch Apple Pie is a showstopping holiday-worthy dessert. It is everything you love about Classic Apple Pie with a buttery crumb topping.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE APPLE PIE:
►1 disk of pie dough (1/2 of our pie dough recipe).
►2 1/4 lbs granny smith apples (6 medium apples)
►1 tsp cinnamon
►8 Tbsp unsalted butter
►3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
►1/4 cup water
►1 cup granulated sugar
INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUMB TOPPING:
►1 cup all-purpose flour
►1/4 cup packed brown sugar
►2 Tbsp granulated sugar
►1/4 tsp cinnamon
►1/4 tsp Salt
►8 Tbsp (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature

Update: I made this last night in a Dutch oven on a camping trip with my church group. I left off the bottom crust and basically made it like a cobbler. I doubled the topping recipe. It was amazing and it was actually pretty resilient to burning because of the water content in the apples. Thanks, Natasha! (Maybe you could do a little series of recipes adapted to outdoor cooking?)

That was my husband’s favorite pie for me to bake. Sometimes I would add a few canned peaches with the fresh apples 🍎 and it was so good. I’d rather have Dutch than a flour crust and it’s easier to make.

The Apple Machine is one of my favorite kitchen tools! Works great for all kinds of recipes that use pears, potatoes, sweet potatoes, zucchini, etc! I also pre-prepare apples we get at the orchard earlier in the fall, and freeze them for the holidays. They work well for my dutch apple pie every time!

It looks really tasty, but living in the Netherlands, I can tell that it's not the usual kind of apple pie that you would expect over here. Dutch apple pies in the NL are made with ½-inch chunks of apples instead of slices, more cinnamon and a bit of nutmeg are required, no nuts but maybe a few raisins if you want to go nuts, and you serve it with whipped cream. Edit: Look up "appeltaart" on KZfaq to see how we do it.

The appeltaart (apple pie) that appears in the first Dutch cookbook, _Een notabel boecxken van cokeryen_ was printed in Brussels in 1514. That recipe was contributed to the _Rijksmuseum Cookbook_ by Dutch pastry master and TV chef Rudolph van Veen and notes slices of apples. I don't see where nutmeg was used, but 100 grams of raisins, yes. I'm sure it can be made various ways.

Hi Natasha, I lived in the Netherlands for almost 20 yrs now, so I can say that this is not the typical Dutch apple pie. Their apple pie always covered with dough. You're combining apple pie with apple crumble.

Yea, that wasn’t a really nice comment. It’s not really funny either, just kinda of mean. She makes awesome recipes and is demonstrating time, work, and effort. Don’t make assumptions about a persons life. What if she shares all of here desserts with her family? What if it is frozen and eaten at a later date? What if she gives away her desserts. You don’t really know.

This really is the best pie!!!! I add cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg, and vanilla extract to the sauce too!!!! Thank you for this recipe!!! I love taking my laptop in the kitchen and watch your videos as I'm cooking!!! I love your pleasant demeanor too! I'm making this for my family for Christmas, and I can tell it's going to be PERFECT! Apple pie a’la mode is always a treat, BUT... if you’re in a more savory kinda mood, try a warm slice of this pie with several slices of cold sharp cheddar cheese... these two flavors take this over the top! Thank you Natasha, for always making our favorite recipes that much better!
