How to Make Herbal Comfrey Salve or Balm using Fresh Comfrey Leaves

This video will show how I make healing Herbal Comfrey Salve using fresh Comfrey leaves from the garden. This salve requires only three ingredients: Fresh Comfrey Leaves, Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil, and pure Beeswax. Virgin Olive Oil can be used instead of Coconut Oil if desired. The Comfrey Salve is great for healing bruises, scratches, rashes, etc.
I use the quick infusion method of making the Comfrey Infused Oil, which is then mixed with beeswax to make the salve. One cup of infused oil with one ounce of beeswax makes a perfect blend. Once the salve is sealed into the glass jars it has a very long shelf life. But, since we use a lot of it, it does not set on the self very long.
This video is informational only, on the process I use to make Comfrey Salve for my personal use only. I am not a doctor, and do not offer any medical advice or recommendations. I use the Comfrey Salve for external skin irritations only, and never use on an open wound.

Very nice! I’ve been making herbal oils to get ready for this. I like that you mentioned the one cup to one ounce ratio. That will work for any combination. 👍👍👍

Meant to say I've made with my own grown comfrey I added 1 jar coconut wasn't enough topped up with pure cold pressed olive oil , I will be adding organic beeswax direct from bee farm Dingle Ireland and a few pure essential oils , I am an Aromatherapy holistic practitioner . Thank you for your easy to follow recipie.

In addition to being a great salve for rashes and burns, it is also very good for insect bites. I recently got a very painful bite from an Assassin Bug while gardening. I put some Comfrey Salve on the bite and the stinging quit almost instantly.

Bees wax melts on hot comfrey infusion no need to melt on another container. Just grate it so it's faster to melt in hot comfrey infusion. That's what am doing everytime I make a herbal ointment/cream.

The consistency depends on how much bees wax is used. The more bees wax, the firmer the salve, and less bees wax makes it very soft like Vaseline. I like it more solid.

I made this skipping the bees wax as I didn’t have any. After staining the infusion in a glass jar I left the jar on the countertop for maybe 2 weeks and being warm since it’s summer time, I think some mold grew on the top. It’s little white dots - not sure if it’s mold or what it is. Have you seen something like that in your jars? Thanks again for the informative video!

I have not experienced that, but when I was researching making Comfrey Salve a number of articles indicated that not getting all of the moisture out of the infusion will result in mold forming on top of the salve. Were the leaves completely dry before starting the infusion? Were the leaves kept completely submerged in oil during the infusion process? Both of these things are necessary for the moisture to evaporate during the infusion process.

@@ohio_gardener thank you so much for sharing what you found. I had washed the leaves before I started so the leaves were still wet. They were submerged in the coconut oil, the entire time, but maybe the 24 hours wasn’t enough for all the moisture to evaporate. It was easy enough that I can do it again :-) thanks again

When you put the jar in the crockpot to infuse the oil do you add water to the crockpot or do you just set the jar down in a dry crockpot?

Yes, the crockpot has water in it, and it has to be checked periodically to add water if it evaporates down. I put a small grid under the jar to keep it off the bottom of the crockpot, but not sure that is necessary.

How did you grow your comfrey, from seeds or young nursery plants?

I grow Bocking 14 comfrey, which does not set seed. I originally bought some root cuttings years ago to get them started, and I have since been able to dig plants and make more root cuttings to expand the number of plants I have. Coconut oil liquefies at 75ºF, and does not make a solid salve at room temperature. The beeswax keeps it as a solid salve since it has a melting point of over 120ºF.

yes it is not solid without the wax but still not liquid. You had to melt the coconut oil first, right ? So when it cools it will be as hard as it was before melting it... right ?@@ohio_gardener

I don't know, I never tried it. I have an abundant supply of beeswax, so haven't looked for alternatives.

No, sorry, I don't. A good site for purchasing them is Edible Acres (www.edibleacres.org), but they are often sold out. If you contact them, they may be able to let you know when they are in stock again.

The beeswax solidifies it so that it becomes a salve. Without the beeswax it would remain a liquid oil. Use more or less beeswax depending on how solid you want the salve.

Dod you leave the crockpot on all night?

Yes, I let the leaves seep in the warm oil for 24 hours. I had to keep checking and adding water to the crock pot, though, as it kept evaporating out. A crock pot with a "warm" option would probably prevent that.

@@jamithompson358 I have seen where others have made the ointment using just root pieces, so it would probably work. I have only used the leaves, though.
