Always kind of fun to legally do something “the system” tells you you can’t! Your work around seems a bit silly at first, but the more I think about it, the more useful it becomes. The “Sad Hams” are going to have a meltdown if they hear about it!

Frigg'n brilliant... So simple and the answer was right there. I bought a GMRS license because my family isn't interested in studying for their HAM license, but see the value in radio (odd I know). This gets me what I've beeen wanting (well mostly). Thanks again...

Keeping in mind that federal law allows anyone to transmit on any frequency during an emergency. That includes law enforcement EMS fire amateur radio marine GMRS and more.

That’s a great idea and workaround. Completely legal too as far as I can tell. Unfortunately many of the newer GMRS radios don’t receive outside GMRS frequencies. I have a Wouxun KG-905G that won’t. Bummer. Thanks for making great videos!

Do you have to have a handheld like in this video to accomplish this or can you do this with the vehicle mounted ones. Also do I need a 50W GMRS radio or will the 15W work just fine for being on the trails and communicating with a group? Appreciate any advice you can give.

So technically I can have a repeaters input vhf, and output GMRS and not be breaking any laws. I would never be transmitting on vhf, just listening.

Probably not an issue for the GMRS Operator, but.....Part 97(3)(a)(10) Broadcasting. Transmissions intended for reception by the general public, either direct or relayed. Maybe for an Amateur that wants to keep his license, not so much ? I think from the stories circulating on KZfaq, about the FCC moving against Hams transmitting with non type accepted radios on the GMRS Frequencies , and infractions made by licensed GMRS users It seems the Feds have learned a hard lesson, and may be trying to keep GMRS, legit ? Basically not wanting it to turn into the mess 11 meter C.B. became. Too, I think since GMRS is more family oriented, where Children are much more likely to come into contact with adults they may be more concerned ? I have heard some new Hams argue about the traditions that set the foundation for they themselves to get a Ham ticket ! A couple being, not discussing Religion, or Politics while using Amateur Radio ! Which very likely comes from not having to work at their license, as perhaps some earlier in what was called a Service did ? Some I believe, may be just Societies attitude nowadays ! But typically people don't respect something they really never worked at. Sitting for hours in front of a Computer for hours on end, may not count !IMO ! And I think that philosophy can be applied to many things in life ! Perhaps that is just where the Human Animal has found itself ? It would be easy to go on and on, but I will stop with this, particularly pertaining to Amateur Radio ! It's one thing to experiment, then move on, but there are those too lazy to study for a Ham ticket, and giving an idea as how to somewhat circumvent the rules, may prove troublesome ? Be careful of what you ask for ! 🤔...?

crazy this video popped up on my computer today, I'm new to gmrs, not a ham neither, and was thinking about this same thing.

So simple, but never crossed my mind! As far as the law, the way I have read it, it is perfectly legal. Both are transmitting on their respective freqs, and both are just monitoring the other freqs. But, on the other hand, the conversation will be heard as one way on the freq. So, it "may" be considered a beacon transmission. Like mentioned in the video, it is a grey area until proven illegal.

This would fall under "broadcasting" heh. You're using a ham frequency for one-way communication (since the return comm is not on a ham frequency). The rules from that test you took should have mentioned beacons, remote control (RC) frequencies, and other times you're allowed to do one-way communication. This isn't one of them.

Oh jeez. Just Mars/CAP mod your radios and talk in them. Such a petty thing. Anybody who is still crying about using GMRS on amateur and vice versa needs to get a life already. So many other things in life to worry about than some absurd rule that isn't even upheld by the ones that made it.
