This video is about How to mix color, Value, Harmony, paint with a limited palette by National Park Painter Stefan Baumann Host of the PBS painting show The Grand View. In theory, everything can be painted with the three primary colors of Red, Blue and Yellow. This sounds crazy but it is true. Look into your computer printer and you will find three colors of ink that are used together to create the amazing photos that your printer can print. To learn color theory, it’s important to begin with three primary colors, Alizarin Crimson, Thalo Blue and Cadmium Yellow Light. (Because Thalo Blue is so saturated and messy, I recommend that you substitute Cobalt Blue.) Then, with time and patience, you can mix these three colors together and create a beautiful black. The initial goal of a Plein Air painter is to use only these three colors, black, and Titanium white and complete a painting from start to finish. After doing this a couple of times, you will begin making your own choices about what to add to your palette. For example, you may need a bright red for a truck in your painting. After you have exhausted all attempts at mixing Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Yellow to make this red and have come to the conclusion that this combination will not make the red you want, then, and only then, you can search through the box of colors you have been collecting and choose a red that will punch up the color. If you believe that red trucks are going to be a part of what you paint frequently, then include this color as part of your own palette. If not, toss it back into the box. You will start seeing that only few colors will need to be added to create the subjects you select and style that you enjoy painting. You may eventually substitute the first three primary colors in your quest to find the perfect three colors for your paintings; so experiment and find out what works for you. Save some backup colors to keep in the trunk of your car but go on site with as little as you can carry in one trip.
Remember that White is not a color and is only used to create values of a color. The quality of white paint does matter. I recommended that you use a good to best quality of white like Old Holland Titanium White that contains both Titanium and Zinc. The Zinc makes it cooler and balances the warmness of Titanium white making it a true white. Stay away from Permalba White because it contains less pigment and produces a muddy color quickly. If you want your white to have a soft appearance, mix some linseed oil into the paint on the palette.
As for the cost of the paint you choose, except for the white, it does not make any difference if you use a cheap name brand paint that you find at Michael’s or the high-end paint like Vasari or Old Holland. They all produce the same effects when mixed. So, save your money to spend on something that really makes a difference, like buying oil primed linen canvases to paint on.

Love, love, love the teaching, as usual! I wish whoever is talking in the background had the same respect for this Master Artist as I do...if I were a student in this class I would gently but firmly ask her to please be quiet. It really interfers on the video too...a lot of unnecessary work to filter her out!

You're a wonderful teacher Stefan! Just a few points...as a wildlife artist, cadmium red is often found in birds and flowers. It will mix with cerulean blue to create the loveliest muted violets often found in a landscape. I can't do without it! A lemon yellow is essential to create bright greens. You'll never get a bright green if you mix cadmium yellow with cobalt blue, as neither colour "carries" green. I'm a firm believer in the split primary system. Alizarin is a wonderful blue-based red, but it's a fugitive colour (in watercolour, maybe not oils?). Cheers. 😊😊😊

I see lots of comments of people disturbed by the woman talking in the background; she bothered me too. But I found that if I moved back from my monitor a bit, and with my hand closed one ear, I could still hear Stefan but the background noise faded from my hearing. I was then able to comfortably watch the entire video and focus on the lecture without getting really angry. To Stefan, I would recommend that, when filming a lecture like this, that someone monitor the camera to make sure you are centered in the frame. There was one point in this video when you shifted left and nearly disappeared from view altogether.

@francesmcmahon
@francesmcmahon Жыл бұрын
The primaries create black because the pigments are all absorbing the light from each other on a microscopic level. With so much absorption happening, not much is left to bounce back to your eyes, hence the appearance of black.

Reading through the comments, it seems to me that there are lots of objections to the 'background' voice noise. Yep, initially, it was distracting, BUT, do as you aught to be doing when painting, give it a 110% concentration, FOCUS in on the TUTOR and listen to what he has to say ! Could also be an element in there, from the complainants, that they are maybe a little frightened, that they may be 'missing something' in the 'gossip mode'! A Great Informative Lecture. Thank you. Peace

Never too old to learn....This lecture should be a pre-requisite for any beginning oil painting class in any school or university. There is so much basic information regarding materials offered here (brushes, paints, canvasses, solvents, etc.) that people are normally forced to learn by trial and error. Knowing this information and having it available from the outset, would do a lot to bypass all the wasted time, energy (and most of all) money that aspiring artists are forced to sacrifice at the start. There are much more important things to consider in doing art without struggling with poor quality or unnecessary or ill-manageable materials. Subject-matter, composition, color mixing, values...the creative process is undermined by not knowing the basics. Thanks for a great video.

Love this! Use to have a box with all kinds of colored paint tubes. Tried just using the primary colors. Unbelievable experience! I am free! They are the only colors I use now. French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red Medium, Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow. Well I do slip in 1 or 2 others like Indian Yellow for glazing purposes. It was like opening a treasure chest! The fear of, how in the world did I make that color in the first place? No longer comes into question. I took a painting I had start years ago and made the exact colors I had started with at that time. Couldn't believe it! All those colored tubes are now stored in a box and I just don't think about them. I am filled with joy, released from color fear and what in the world will I create in the future seem limitless. Thank you for a wonderful video!

I have purchased all of Richard Schmid's videos and you are right up there with the generosity and knowledge and sharing - the main difference is when someone is talking when Mr. Schmid is talking, he says "Excuse me.... I am talking now" so it gives respect to everyone else trying to learn. I so wish you had stopped in this lecture and said "Excuse me... I am talking now" it is so disrespectful to you, to your students and to us trying to learn when someone is talking non-stop without care of everyone else. For the life of me, I don't know why you put up with this video after video after video.

Wow such an extraordinary artist who shares his knowledge with the world on this site. You are magnificent. I was struggling with color mixing and temperature for a while now I’ve only been painting now for a year and half and my most problem was color mixing temperature and value. You have given me a whole new perspective of this matter with this episode. I am going to continue to watch all of your on line classes and practice what you preach. I know I will never become a master artist at my late age however I do want to become a decent painter. I will consider taking your one on one personal classes on phone. Thank you so very very much for all that you do and give to us out here. I was almost at the point of frustration and told myself I will never get this That I almost threw all my painting stuff away. By listening to this episode you gave me hope. By the way that lady taking in the back ground was very distracting and rude.

Love Stefan's teachings so much, I could listen to him all day. Shame about the $60 brushes though that in this day and age, animals have to be killed for Art. Technology is advancing so much these days that synthetic brushes can imitate the real thing if more people demand it.

I won't buy animal hair brushes. If you have ever seen an animal skinned alive for it's fur, I doubt that many people would

Thanks a lot. I've been struggling to understand colours and your lesson is a big help. Though I love watercolours more, your other lessons are great too, and I find that some things you were saying can be applied not only to art but to life in general. Very close to my thinking. Keep it up please! From Russia with love :-)

the background conversation is so disrespectful! Mr Baumann is very patient. I would be completely silent until I had the noise-makers attention.

Watched your video earlier today & got so much out of it. I don't work much with color anymore since I primarily stick with using charcoal, but this video was super informative & makes me want to get back into painting!
