In this video I show you how I mix shellac for my encaustic artwork. I have found that a 3 pound cut works really well for my shellac burns, so that is the concentration I'm using in my solution.
Making your own shellac works really well if you do shellac burns. You can play with the amount of shellac in the solution so that the cells you get in your burns are big and awesome and you have more control over the final result. I definitely recommend mixing your own shellac if you are an encaustic artist.

Hello!!!! it's very interesting!!!I don't understand well the proportions/measures you are using.I speak spanish and it's very difficult for me understand when you speak.Please, can you tell me if your measures are in pounds,liter or what.The alcohol you use, is that which buy in farmacy?and this preparation ,can be used in a long time or is better make it and use inmediatly? Once you make it, it lasts about a month. I do use cups and ounces to measure...

If you make shellac from dewaxed white shellac flakes you get a very light coloured shellac that you can make white with alcohol ink or dry pigment

Hi, thanks for your video. What would be the mixture if I purchase clear shellac from the can? If I use pigments and if I use alcohol ink? Please explain. Any other ways to make colored shellac from a clear canned shellac?

I don't know what the cut is in a purchased can- I tried to find it on the label, but couldn't. I think it's probably a 1, maybe a 2 pound cut. When you add pigments, try adding as little as possible and see how it burns.
