How to Mix Sky Blue Color

In this video, I demonstrate how to mix the color of a blue sky with acrylics. The colors I use are Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, Hansa Yellow Medium, and Titanium White.
I spend a lot of time trying to achieve an accurate color match, but you can mix a generic sky blue color rather quickly. You can mix sky blue by mixing Ultramarine Blue with Titanium White.
Ultramarine Blue is actually more saturated (more vivid) than the sky, so you can neutralize it with very small amounts of Magenta and Yellow.

I'm just starting these color mixing and matching routines for creating colors and I've been flabbergasted and still am on how artists can see colors inside of colors so accurately. It's cool. Nice mixing.

Thanks! I had to do a color matching assignment in a design class at a community college....everyone in the class was able to complete it. So keep practicing and it will start to make sense and it becomes more intuitive.

Great video. I thought I was nuts trying to get the exact shade of blue for the sky. So glad you made this. Your video on making purple should be helpful. Undertones in red and blue can give ugly purples (brown). Thank you, and keep working outdoors if the color needs to match something, like greens for grasses, trees, etc.

Excellent instruction. I love color matching, esp. of the sky. You might try using oils that don't change much when dry (which is why I prefer them). Also you may notice that the camera will show an annoying exaggerated gradation of the blue, which is not half that strong to the naked eye. In fact sometimes there isn't much at all.

Thanks! I've been using water mixable oils and it's nice not to have to deal with the color shift. The funny thing though is if you thin them with water they have the same color shift problem...but I only use water for the first layer of a painting so it's not much of an issue. Yep, I agree about your observations about cameras. People have this assumption that photos accurately capture colors but they don't. I find myself turning down the saturation and contrast in the settings.

Thanks, at about 0:43 I spritz the paint with water to keep it wet. Acrylics dry even faster outdoors!

I use the same pigments for watercolors. It’s basically they same except that you have to use the white of the paper to lighten the colors which makes it tricky. It’s more difficult to get a close match because of the transparency of the paint and the texture of the paper. However, I think the advantage of watercolors is you can use them to create spontaneous and expressive texture/effects. Plus the colors are vivid and you can exaggerate them to your liking. 🙂

I have a gray color paint is there any way to mix another color in there so it turns blue?

Phthalo Blue is rather potent so that would turn it more blue. But if you’re starting with gray, the blue will be somewhat desaturated and darker than if you were to start over and leave out the gray.

Why was watching this so fucking frustrating 😭😵😣 I'm doing this huge painting and it has tons of different shades of blue and I'm so so done with blue I thought my eyes are gonna bleed if they see any more blue mixing for a month😖😖 Great vid and tips btw you rock

Chris - I tried this and my colors don't match yours. What brand of Ultramarine Blue and Quinacridone Magenta did you use for this? I think the problem is the slight difference in brand colors (mine vs. yours). Thx

Hi Mick, I used Golden heavy body acrylics. I've noticed that some of the student grade Magentas don't have the intensity of the professional Quinacridone Magenta. Another issue I've encountered is Liquitex Basics has Medium Magenta, which contains white. The pure Quinacridone Magenta is more versatile. I hope this helps!
