Colours: Titanium white, Phthalo blue, Ultramarine blue and small amounts of any warm colours (red, yellow, raw sienna and browns).
Brushes: Wide 75mm synthetic brush. 50mm decorating brush and an optional fan brush.
Cover the canvas with white paint working upwards from a line below where you expect the horizon to be. Apply phthalo blue near the top of the canvas and ultramarine above it. Use the wide synthetic brush to blend the colours together working down toward the horizon. Add more white if needed. The blues should fade as they mix with the white near the bottom of the sky.
Add a small amount of your chosen warm colours (reds, yellows, browns) at the bottom of the sky. Use the wide synthetic brush or a fan brush to gradually blend them upwards.
Use the fan brush to remove any unwanted brush strokes or excess colour.
If you are painting a seascape use similar blues as used in the sky to create a horizon line and water.

Hi. There are a few ways to prevent this. Firstly make sure you blend with plenty of white paint near the horizon and use very small amounts of colour. For sunsets I try to use a warm blues such as phthalo blue (red shade not green shade) and ultramarine blue. Also, avoid using any plain yellows. Orange will be less likely to become green when it is mixed with blue.

Great idea. I sometimes do that too. It is the best way to get a perfect horizon, and if the paint bleeds underneath the tape you can fix it easily using a flat brush.

This one is painted on a mdf board primed with acrylic gesso. I recommend using a canvas if possible but primed board is great for practice. If your canvas is too rough add a few more layers of primer, sanding between each layer.

For me as well. Adding retarder to the paint to slow down the drying time simply makes it mix weird and looks weird. Best thing is is to go over the canvas with a wet brush - get it entirely wet, which helps prevent it from drying to quick on the surface.

Thanks. I have been using more Atelier Interactive paints lately. They have a retarder in them which makes them great for blending, especially for a sky where you can use water to give you a bit more time to work. I have had a few problems when working over dry paint but I think that was due to my own impatience. Cheers. Shaun.

Great question. Since the ultramarine blue and phthalo blue are quite warm types of blue they are neutralized by the yellow/orange colours. They are complimentary or quite close to it. Look up colour wheels and complimentary colours for more information. Thanks. Shaun.

There are a few things you can try to help with this problem. Ensure the canvas is properly primed. Wet the canvas and brushes before painting. Add acrylic retarder to your paint. Spray a mist of water over the paint as you are working and try to work quickly. And yes, using more paint may help as well. Thanks for watching.

Hi again, The main challenge (at least to me) in painting a realistic winter sunset is in blending from blue to yellow-orange colors without the mix turning green as a result. Can you advise if you ever did that kind of blending? Thanks
@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+OLEG LITVAK If you use a warm blue such as ultramarine, and add a little red to it you will create an almost indigo colour which will not turn green when it blends with the orange-yellow colours. It will however become greyish and look a bit "muddy" if you overwork it. I would start with the dark blue area at the top or the sky and blend that with plenty of white near the horizon to show light coming from below. Then slowly add your oranges and yellows working up from the horizon.

Awesome tutorial, thank you! Any tips on avoiding the green tinge I keep getting when I blend the blue and yellow into the sky?
@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 3 жыл бұрын
There has been a bit of discussion about this in the comments. Using a warm blue and mixing the yellow with red to make it slightly orange will move you further away from green on the colour wheel and should help to avoid the green tinge. Also make sure there is plenty of titanium white in the intermediate zone before you start to blend them, together.

@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. This one is painted on MDF board primed twice with gesso. You can get canvases that are almost as smooth. Or add a couple of layers of gesso before painting. A little bit of texture in the canvas is good though, unless you are painting very fine details.

Shaun Ryan Thanks for the info :) I've painted one painting on mdf, in oils - few years ago now. Only thing is because it's big it's a little heavy. I've thought about gessoing and sanding my canvases but I figure they're already primed so it seems extra work to me. Smooth ones are more expensive.

I add plenty of water to the brushes before starting and maybe up to 10% water to the paint if required. That can make it easier to work with. If your paint still isn't thin enough you can add some liquifying medium to the paint. I usually don't add any during this stage.

Hi again, I would like to see you painting a sunset sky - do you plan such a video in the future? I am struggling to get color transitions from grey-ish blue at the top to orange to pink to violet at the horizon (I am trying in painting a winter sunset) Thanks
@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+OLEG LITVAK I don't get much time to make videos these days but a sunset is definitely on the list. Sunsets are fascinating and understanding what causes the various colours is important. If you can get the type of blue right (warm or cool) that is a great starting point and often the key to a successful sunset. If possible, get a colour wheel and compare it to some sunset photos to see how the colour gradients usually work.

how do you stop the blue and yellow from turning green?
@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 7 жыл бұрын
There are a few ways that I do it. I apply the blue at the top and orange at the bottom with plenty of white space between which can be carefully blended without over-blending which would give it a dull muddy colour. Secondly, have a look at some photos of clear sunset skies. You will notice that the blue at the top of the sky is usually a warm blue shifted toward purple. When that colour is mixed with a warm yellow/orange it will become grey and you won't get a green area between the top and bottom of your sky.

In acrylic while doing sky the paint dry quickly before merging. Then how to merge colour if it dries,from very dark to light and more light before making river. That also in canvas. 2 because wheat her in India is quite hot with result if I add water and paint in canvas in stand it drip water along with colour can u teach me basic how to paint clouds that also smaller clouds and merge in sky. To a raw person who has never painted sky & clouds with lesson
@ShaunRyan
@ShaunRyan 8 жыл бұрын
+Rimu Malhotra If you find that the paint is drying too quickly you can add a small amount of retarder which will slow the drying time. Make sure your brushes are wet before starting and keep them wet by washing your brushes in water. Keep a water bottle nearby so you can lightly spray water over the canvas and try to blend quickly. You can also add a liquifying medium or some types of acrylic varnish medium to your paint so that you don't end up with too much water in the paint. I hope that helps.

That can be because of too much overlap of yellow and blue. Make sure the blue is warm enough (ie closer to purple) and that the yellow has some red in it. That will give you more of a neutral or grey middle area where they blend together.
