Instead of the plaster/concrete mix, I use $4 can of spray foam, which hardens and then can be carved into any shape. Isn’t as smooth a surface as plaster, but it makes a lightweight mount.

Great video, I really enjoy your "How to videos"! I followed your first video on how to do this a few years ago, and the antler mount turned out great. I have a couple more deer antler sets I got from my grandfather and I will be using your videos to help me get those done right too! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Ryan, firstly want to say thank you first and foremost. Because of you, I’ve turned a hobby into a profitable business. Seeing you made your own app is SUPER awesome and I immediately downloaded. I have a couple questions for you: 1) do you always use havalon blades? It seems the prices for them have gone up a ton in the last year. I’ve seen some off brand ones on Amazon but wasn’t sure if they were worth the hype. 2) I notice you always wear KUIU brand gear. I have been debating on getting some for years now (literally) but I have some reservations. I live in the north and it gets super cold here during whitetail season and I wasn’t sure if you’d recommend KUIU over SITKA? 3) I’d love to hear some of your horror stories about taxidermy. I’ve been learning on the fly for the last 5 years and have made a ton of mistakes but that’s how we learn! Thanks for all you do in helping people like us. You seem like a great guy and I wish you nothing but success. I will and do watch every single video you post on YT and your app!
@WHITEBONE2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so so much brother. I’ve only ever used Havalon. I buy them in bulk by the thousands. I’m a huge KUIU fan worn that stuff all over the world. It is designed to be warm for the weight. If Climbing mountains isn’t a concern good old fashion Carhartt’s are hard to be. If you’re moving climbing hiking you cannot be either kuiu or Sitka other brands are exceptional. I will absolutely share some horror stories with you right in line for the app

I never get tired of watching you do your magic and thanks again for showing us how to do the simple antler mount. Question...what would you use to darken up the whitened older antler set to make it look more....not so bleached out? Mike in sunny Florida
@bobboyer94402 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed the process and learned a few things to help me make better antler mounts. I have only used felt and jute cord around the base of the antlers. I have been doing this for free for any members of our hunt camp. Can you give me a heads up as to what I should charge if a stranger asked me to do a mount for him or her. With felt and leather.
@michaelbrown26782 жыл бұрын
I've done those for several year with a few minor differences. I will use premade forms (mainly for convenience) and paper mache. I also prefer different shades of rope to go around the burr.

Great video. This has inspired me to try my hand on a rack I have in the garage. Just curious, I am looking on the leather guys website and trying to figure out which type of deer leather you used that had grain with a sheen on one side and a matte texture on the other side? This is the last piece of my puzzle before I start my project

I've watched a few of your videos and I am excited to use this to mount my first whitetail buck. Thank you for providing these great instructional videos and merry Christmas! I did have one question though. I got my first bull elk last year and when we were field dressing it we were in a rush to beat a snow storm and when it came time to take the antlers, we just sawed them off and I have had a hard time finding a good way to mount them. How would you recommend mounting antlers like that?
@ericmusgrove28282 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing this process. Afer my dad passed all his racks that were hanging outside getting bleached out were taken down for a remodel and I was able to get them all. I really would like to do this with them and put togther a "DADS DEER" wall as a tribute to him and the animals he took over the years. What is the best thing to do with the antlers that are bleached out? most of them are 10 to 30 yeras old.

First of all, Merry Christmas! I've been watching on and off for a while and quickly got into bone hoarding ontop of my scrap metal hoarding, so I use your cleaning processes alot. I collected some carcasses from out in the field about two years ago and finally got around to cleaning them up. I've already got the skull cleaned up nicely on the non smashed one, but I'm struggling to get the mummified tissue off the vertebrae. My sister and I have been soaking the bones in some dish soap and warm water for about three days now, scrubbing them between water changes. Alot of the tissue has come loose but the tendons are clinging, and I can't use a power washer because of how small the bones are. Do you have any suggestions on how to get the rest of the tissue off before I attempt a boil? I plan on turning them into a necklace so I want them to look really nice.

This off topic from this video but why do you boil them in oxiclean. We just boil them in non iodized salt. This keeps antlers from changing colors so you don't need to wrap them then we pressure wash. We also just spray peroxide on the skull and let it dry 4 or 5 times and it's perfect white. We don't ha e issues with yellowing later on. Does the oxiclean make pressure washing easier?

Not the right video to comment on but I wanted to ask a question, have you ever repaired a broken skull? I was driving one night saw a dead buck on the side of the road and decided to euro mount it. Picked it up and realized one antler broke part of the eye socket off with it. Is it possible to fix that and still have a half way decent looking mount?
@cannistershot22775 ай бұрын
Tried this today. My first try, the 50/50 mix hardened between the time I added the water and the time I walked over to the workbench and was no longer pliable. Mixed up another batch on the workbench and was only able to get the inside of the skull stuffed with the 50/50 mix and a big blob coming out the front before the mix no longer moldable. I used a knife to smooth out what I had before it go too hard. Will try a 3rd go for the top of the skull. Not sure why my mix is hardening so quickly. Both the plaster of paris and the concrete mix say they have a 20 minute set time, but it seems more like 5 minutes for me. Maybe I need to add more water to the mix...
