In retrospect, there are a few things I would do differently to make this move easier. But I was thinking on the fly. After filming, I put a piece of conduit pipe under the sled. That allowed me to easily roll and pivot the tub into the bathroom.
@ajfreeze21511 ай бұрын
I was totally just thinking that! I use that to move my milling machine all the time.
@k.d.892411 ай бұрын
I use that trick a lot. I would think with rollers one could pull it up the ramp with just a rope and pully.
@nicklocicero397411 ай бұрын
Another thought... going up the stairs on the boards, some talcum powder between the sled and the boards. I was going to make a comment about your OSHA approved Crocs till I saw you took them off. 🤣🤣 We should show this to the people who insist the pyramids were built by aliens. Good job.

Moving heavy things with simple tools has always fascinated me. Levers and inclined planes are amazing. Control friction (add it where you need something to stay in place, reduce it where you need something to move) and you've got some real power. At the end of the day though, this was only successful due to the proper use of cargo shorts and Crocs. 😉

My brother in law and I moved that same tub to the second floor of my father in laws house. We carried it. It was insane....but it was 20 years ago and we were both in our early thirties. Today it would put me in the hospital! Great job!

Wow! Well Done You! You certainly don’t give up. I’m just figuring out how to move my cast Iron Tub so I can paint it. No good asking hubby he’d rather go to the pub so I’ve waited 4 weeks now and I’ve purchased small pads to glide it across a tiled floor. I’ll have a go soon and I’m a woman and 71!

I was going to comment that you should use a piece of closet rod or a broom handle. Saw where you commented you used a piece of conduit. I've used wood closet rod and pvc pipe to move a safe before. Nearly 30 years ago worked at Lowe's Hardware in the warehouse and lumber yard and we had a manager with the bright idea to put all the cast iron tubs up in the top racks of the warehouse. It was always fun trying to get one of those out 16 ft up in the air by yourself.😂

I used to do similar things working alone to install boilers. It is always a challenge, but it is amazing what 1 man can do with some material and some common sense and knowhow. A plumber who worked with me taught me the sled trick about 25 years ago. It works well I only have two things to suggest. Yes, some rollers under the planks on top of the stair landing and to roll it through the house. Also, a cleat screwed to the underneath of the planks against the walkway would have kept the planks from being pulled up the stairs Good job
@jerebigler752011 ай бұрын
Interesting. Looked like a lot of hard work. I expected the rollers to come out but saw where you did that later. Good idea! hindsight is always 20-20 they say. Might have helped to use a snatch block and some sort of pulley in your rigging but you did accomplished what you set out to do. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

This video deserves some sort of award, Oscar, Emmy, etc I don't know.. I was exhausted watching you. Couldn't breathe until you got it into the house. Where was your wife? I know, she was busy preparing you a big meal of recovery. I hope those 2 delivery men watched this. I will never be able to use the info in this video, but I learned that with some ingenuity, creativity, with past experience, etc.. anything can be done. If you did not do this, all the ingenuity, creativity, etc..stored within you would have been wasted. I am humbled. Thank you, Herrick.

I enjoyed reading your comment, Dorothy. It was a hot muggy day and friends invited my wife to hang out at their pond. She didn’t think she should leave me alone. I told her to go. She scolded me (“You better not hurt yourself!”). She was away enjoying herself, and I was enjoying my little challenge. 😊

I kept waiting for the ramps to fail, but then they started sliding! Lol. Totally agree, a couple of rollers would have made that much easier. Maybe a little wax or grease on sled runners would have been useful, as well. Either way, great job!

You did it! Great watching you get it done, amazing. Sometimes I have to get a piece of furniture in then out of my car on my own, then into the house, without damaging anything, which is why I like to do it myself. Its all stressful at times if I havent done it before but so far so good. Wont be trying anything of cast iron weight though. Its good to see what other people do and learn by watching their cleverness, thanks a bunch for your video.

Impressive! This reminds me of when my husband figured out how to lift two old clothesline poles (with 200lbs of concrete on the bottom of each and 2 1/2’ deep) out of their holes with a few boards and some rope. Great engineering minds think alike!

WOW! That brought back bad memories... A few years back I moved 2 cast iron tubs just like that one out of my house. My wife hated them so I built tile showers and moved the tubs to the back yard. Don't have a clue what I am going to do with them. Probably get sold for scrap metal some day.....

Very impressive. 1 man vs 400 lbs. I was noticing the wide boards,( maybe 2x10s?) rubbing against the bull nose of the top step. I hope that friction didnt leave a mark. I agree with your modification to use pvc pipes to reduce friction. I use those kind of pipes to move my mobile chicken coop in the pasture weekly. Its close to 400 lbs as well and with 4 pipes slipped under the base, 1 man can push it likes its on rails. Id love to have thar cold drink with you and chat for a bit. Im sure id learn a lot from you just during that time.
@herrickkimball10 ай бұрын
The 2x planks are my scaffold planks. They left a rub mark on the stair nosing but no damage. I just need to coat them with the deck stain I use.
@RoyatAvalonFarms11 ай бұрын
Also in retrospect, once you got the tub across the threshold, you could have used an inexpensive moving dolly like is found at Harbor Freight. 1 dolly would easily hold that weight, but 2 dollies used together might have made it easily manueverable once on the level floor. I keep about 4 dollies around my garage for such occassions as this. They were probably about $8 to $12 each and the pivoting wheels alone were worth that.
@herrickkimball10 ай бұрын
Yes, one of those dollies would have been good to have. I should own at least one of those. When I worked at my prison industry job we used them to move heavy office furniture long distances into state office buildings. They made the job a whole lot easier! 👍

A+ for each, with determination at the forefront followed by ingenuity & self reliance. At 74 I was and still am awed at man's capability to get things done [much to my wife's constant fretting] My comments here are not to correct or dismiss your successful efforts, rather just my own path. Hey, it's how civilizations are built. I'm 1st assuming you, at least I, thought the sled would ride over the rails not to be drawn with it. Next of course before you brought it out, I too use a 'come-a-long' (winch) for a lot of my own DIY efforts. Also a great tool aiding felling trees in tight spaces. As for the digging bar, perfect, I keep several of them, each slightly different lengths. I would have added 1x's with towels to rest the bar against the door for added face protection. As for using pipes, I also have done that but now I use sections of round wood closet poles. Great video for a subject I wasn't even looking up. Thanks for sharing.

Notice from about @4:41 to @4:48 the use of leverage: the thigh under the tub, the ball of the foot on the wood and ankle and knee power. Also at circa @9:11, if that upward pull had been too hard, a perfect length of 2x4 between pallet and rope would work too. Not everyone is as strong. This was a great video, continuous problem solving along the way. Wondering: was the backing out of screw/adding shims a planned step to get a super tight grip, or only because it was too tight due to the tarp thickness? Thanks.
@herrickkimball11 ай бұрын
The shims were not planned. I should have made the sled a tad wider. Thanks for the comment.

@herrickkimball11 ай бұрын
All that pulling at the very end was unnecessary. A length of 3/4” conduit under the sled would have made it easy. That’s how I moved it the rest of the way and turned right through a doorway. Earlier in the process the come along would have worked better for me if I had my anchor bar up higher in the doorway. 👍
