How To Perform A Master Reset And Reboot On Your Sync System

If you don't want to have to reinstall your phone but want to give your Sync 3 system a tweak watch this video on how to do a "soft reset" • Soft Reboot Hack For S...
...Lots of viewers on my "Why Your Car Won't Sync Your Phone" video have left comments on how to perform a master reset and reboot of the Sync system. In this video I show step by step instructions on how to do it.
I'm going to list all the various fixes people have utilized below. I can't vouch for them first hand except for the software upgrade at syncmyride.com
1. Take off both battery cables from the battery, touch the ends that attach to the battery together for 15 seconds, wait a minute and reattach to battery. This is an actual TSB from Ford to reset the Sync system.
2. Do a software update at syncmyride.com I had to do this when I bought my 2010 Fusion. The vehicle was 7 years old when I bought it and hadn't been updated. Free to do and relatively easy.
Once you are at the site register your vehicle by inputting the VIN number. You will then be able to download a software update to a thumb or flash drive. Take that same drive and upload it to your vehicle via the USB port. Then just follow prompts.
3. Take out the fuse that drives Sync and replace.

Thought I'd add to the thanking train. My Bluetooth was constantly disconnecting from my phone for no discernable reason. I read about pulling fuses out and disconnecting the battery and all of these other "fixes". Watched your video real quick, and lo and behold, my phone connects with no problem again. Thank you!

Thank you! After a new car battery, Sync would not connect to any of our 3 phones. The sync reboot did it! Dealer said we needed an expensive sync model in the dash replaced 👊😂

Jim: thanks for your help! I have a 2015 Taurus SEL AWD with the same radio system shown in this screen. All of a sudden I lost the Bluetooth symbol and phone sync. Did the reset on the radio (didn’t know about the Sync reset process) Was going to remove and replace fuse #9 for n the inside fuse box, however that is easier said than done since you can’t see fuse #9 The fix was simply to re-Sync my iPhone. Bluetooth symbol came back and all is well!! Thanks again from Connecticut. Mark G.

Going to give this a go for my 2015 Taurus - same type screen. One day the Bluetooth worked perfectly, next day it didn't. Ditto for the phone. Did the Master Reset, however did not know about the Sync Reboot. THANK YOU!!

Thank you for posting this. The SYNC Reboot fixed a problem with my phone being connected but not being able to select Bluetooth Audio. SYNC would just say "No Bluetooth device is available right now. I will try to connecte one" and then nothing would happen.

I have a 2017 fusion with 4 inch screen. I need to replace the screen unit and found the same one but from a 2013 (I believe that's the year) Ford focus. Would I beable to reprogram the focus radio to my fusion by doing this reset or putting I radio code found in manual? Thank you!!!

Not sure if the 2013 module works in a 2017 and don’t want to give you bad information. In theory it should work but we know how that goes. I do recommend going to sync my ride.com and getting a software update for it. Good luck!

I'm now on option 2. I went to the site and entered the VIN code and it shows there is an update available. go to Ford dealer and I don't see any button to download the update to the drive. Can you tell me where I can download it to the drive?

I have been trying to sync the ford 2015 explorer basic forever. I saw many videos that say I have to go into the sync settings but I can't find that on this ford. It gives me the option of sound settings or radio settings. Help please

I would make sure you have sync as it wasn’t always a standard option. If you do have it then try to reset it and reboot it. If that doesn’t work try updating at syncmyride.com and if that doesn’t do it you might need to spend some bucks

Ok how about when the wonderful sync system doesn’t even give you the option of a master reset etc. it’s stuck in a mode that just says sync. I have tried to disconnect the battery etc and for some reason certain menus not populating. Either the radio is bad or possibly a firmware would you think?

Probably need a new module which is costly. If you have tried all the hacks listed you might look at an aftermarket radio with Bluetooth capability vs new module cost and what if any limits that might have.

Any help?? I don't get a system reboot option as my display screen will just say Bluetooth off. After I turn it on it on the vehicle it goes back to sync line in and these options repeat themselves with the same issues. Any help?

will that reset fix "no key decteted" ? sometimes it takes multiple trys before starting the engine. only have 2 keys but remember seeing a screen that said 3 were programmed. the other day it lost Nav but it came back after restaring the car. It's a 2015 Taurus SHO. Thank you

Truthfully don’t know but can’t hurt to try it. Usually you see that with push button starts and you put a new battery in the remote and your good to go. Sorry can’t give you more.

First I would look for badging that says Sync by Microsoft, it is usually by the gearshift area and that assures you that your vehicle has the Sync feature. It wasn’t always standard equipment. If you have it read the comments above that provide some hacks that have worked for some people

Try taking off both battery cables off and touch the ends together for 15 seconds. This will sometimes cause the system to reset itself. Once it frees up register it at syncmyride.com and check for a software update. If one is available download it to a thumb or flash drive and then put that drive in your vehicles USB port to upload the software upgrade to the system

It is pretty expensive to replace it so try a couple of things first. Go to syncmyride.com which is Fords site dedicated to Sync. It will give you a free software update if one is available and you can download the update to a thumb drive and upload to your vehicle through the USB port. If the update doesn’t want to take then you have to try to manually unfreeze your Sync system. A couple of hacks seem to work. Take both battery cables off and hold the battery cable ends together for a minute and reinstall after 5 minutes. Another one is to take the fuse out that runs Sync, wait around 5 minutes and reinstall. Hope you get it going!

I am retired from the business but never heard of a battery appearing when you press media. I would advise checking out some of the hacks I listed to manually unfreeze the system or just save a lot of time and buy an aftermarket audio system that has Bluetooth connectivity.

My Ford fusion says after I click on the advance and then I go to the reset but the second thing I have to do to reboot when I go to go to the reboot it says install applications instead of reboot. I don't understand. It's totally different than yours on that last one

They have done several software upgrades since I filmed that and the reboot option seems to have gone away. Unfortunately I retired so don’t know for sure.

The master reset should fix most issues and not sure why but on some sync systems the reboot is called something like system default. Check for it in the submenu

You might need a new module which is quite expensive. Try to reset it manually using some of the hacks in the description or comments but it might be cheaper to just upgrade to an aftermarket stereo with Bluetooth capability

W moim mk5 2015 rok sync dwa ustawiłem sobie hd radio przez forscan. Było lepiej i super. Ale zmieniłem jescze ustawienia acm żeby było jeacze lepiej. A nie bylo. Wróciłem do moich ustawień. I z hd radio włączonym czy bez gra jak wcześniej. A grało lepiej. Zauważyłem też lekkie trzaski jak ktoś dziwni. Jak jest rozmowa w miarę ok. Mam tez kilka modów z forscana. Pytanie czy sam reset radia pomoże. Czy reset sync 2. Czy nede musiał znowu kodować mody? Sync 2 rest robi sie chyba z poziomu radia. A rest chyba samego radia przez kombinacje klawiszy.

You might be screwed and the module that runs it died or it is frozen up. There are some hacks you can try to manually reset it. I listed them above.

Have a 2016 Fusion and my PHONE button does nothing when I press it. Appears all other radio functions are working but lost Bluetooth phone connection last week and cannot figure out how to reconnect it since I get NO menu when PHONE button pressed. HELP

You might be screwed and need a new module but try a couple of things first. Disconnect the red positive battery cable and wait a couple of minutes and reattach. You might try taking out the fuse that runs it as well. Hopefully it wii reboot the system for you. Not sure which fuse you pull but do a search and see if anyone has a video on it.

Does it show up as the vehicle you're pairing the phone to? If not try updating your phone and if that doesn't work try doing a reboot or master reset, easily done watch the video I shot on how to do it in the description above.

What if phone and media buttons don’t work ? Would ripping it out of the dash and running over it help ?

Lol Aside from some initial stress relief not recommended. Try manually resetting your system by taking out the fuse that runs sync and reinstall it. The other fix is to take off both battery cables and hold the ends together for minute, wait 5 minutes and reattach. If that doesn’t unfreeze it the module could be bad which means big buck repair.

Came here for this comment. Suddenly my media and phone buttons do not work! Grr I’ve done all the open/close door etc.. turn on/off Bluetooth on phone. My first thought after I couldn’t press the phone or media buttons when they mysteriously stopped working was fuses.. then I was thinking what if I disconnected the battery. Will take it up to my to BIL to take a looksee. You answered my questions and confirmed what I was thinking!

Sounds like your module that runs Sync is bad or perhaps just frozen up. I listed some hacks you can try to do to unfreeze it in the description

If you don’t see the Sync by Microsoft badging by the gearshift you may not have Sync as it was an option early on. Not sure what trim level your Explorer is but must be base.

What do you do when you reboot the sync and you go to the media screen and it’s just blank? I try to press the phone button and nothing happens. This has happened to me a couple of times and it’s really frustrating and annoying. Please help give me a solution

I don’t have the option for sync reboot. When I reset, it says sync line in. And when I go back to the menu, it says “install application” after master reset.

Not sure if a software update deleted the reboot option but for whatever reason sync doesn’t offer a reboot option anymore or they use a different term. Sorry I can’t be more specific but retired a while back.

I think early rear cameras may have used the smaller screen but not really sure. They had it come on the rear view mirror on certain models as well but typically you have the larger screen.

You may need a new screen but I would try to update your system before spending dollars. Go to sync my ride.com and it wii allow you to register your Explorer and can also provide you with any software updates. And it’s free.

Jim Parisi by the way, i have base trim so i have the 4” screen that doesn’t have sync or bluetooth or anything of that sort it’s so basic it plays music it plays the radio and it has EQ settings that’s about it. it’s been working well recently and the only times it shuts off is like after the cars been on already then turned off and no matter how soon or late you restart it the screen is off for awhile or till your next drive. you can’t start it then stop then repeat either it just takes it’s own time to turn on but like i said it’s been working better and it’s not a hassle anymore

Sorry but I made the video to show folks how to reset sync and don’t know how to fix radio issues. I do know that aftermarket radios that offer Bluetooth are available and that might be your cheapest fix. You can try to use some of the hacks I listed to manually unfreeze a sync system but you might have a bad module that controls your radio and sync system.

Assuming you did the reset you might need an upgrade to the software that runs Sync. You can get it for free at syncmyride.com but you will need to upload it from a flash drive to the USB port

I would try a couple of things. Go to syncmyride.com and register your vehicle. That will allow you to download a software update to a flash or thumb drive. Put that in your vehicles USB port and follow the prompts to upload the update to the Sync system. If your system is not wanting to update take off both battery cables and hold the ends together for 15 seconds. Wait a couple of minutes and reattach your cables to the battery. Warning! Don’t do this if you need your vehicle to pass an emissions test any time soon because it will throw a code up. Hope it works for you.

I click phone and get nothing and the input and USB in the center console does nothing. I think the part that allows you to sync the phone is bad, but I have no clue what the part is called or if it can be replaced.

Unfortunately it sounds like the module is the problem and it is an expensive fix. I would try a couple of things first. Take off both battery cables off and hold the ends together for 15 seconds and reattach to the battery. This may reset the system. Taking out the fuse and then putting it back in sometimes works as well and if you can get the USB port to work try getting a software update at syncmyride.com and installing it to your vehicle via the USB port. Hope this helps.

@@BluesGuitarPlayer Thanks we have not had very good luck with this car. At 18k miles it had a cracked head in 3 places left us stranded and then after they fixed that under power train the radio quit at 38k. Ford does not stand behind their products I have found out. Hope that works or I may have to go after market for a new radio. Another year and we will trade it for a Toyota Camry we gave Ford a try and the car looked great. Back to the trusty Toyotas from now on for us:P Ill update this if the battery cable test works Thanks!

@@JasPlun Ford radios are not the best for sure but as an overall vehicle I have seen a lot of them traded in with over 300,000 miles. It really comes down to your comfort level when purchasing. Toyota is a brand that has worked for you in the past so I understand your comfort level with them.

A couple of things to check out before paying for a new module. Try manually rebooting the system and then do a software update at syncmyride.com To manually reset your system take off both battery cables and hold the ends together for 15 seconds and then after 5 minutes reattach. Taking out the fuse that powers Sync and putting it back it is also something that folks do. Hope it works.
