I'm so happy that I used golf pegs around the spaces where I planted my tulip bulbs. The bed is overgrown with weeds and without the pegs the risk is high I'd accidentally dig them up when tidying it. I've already been quite this year. I have put in a few tomatoe seeds and will do more as the weeks progress. Soon I'll be planting some early potatoes in their potatoe grow bags. I plant most of my fruit and veggies in containers, especially my fruit bushes. for, should I decide to move, I can take them with me. I placed them all close to the house on a concrete path that leads to nowhere and I'm quite successful. The wall is West-facing, so they all get a lot of light and I think the bricks and the surface reflect the warmth. Growing my own fruits and veggies have saved me a small fortune last year. The only downside to that is, that they are all seasonal. However, I remember times when you could only buy seasonal in the shops, so I re-learned the art of making preserves, which is fun for the grandchildren. It's also interesting to pair crops. Not all of them like each other, but if you grow the perfect partners together, they benefit from each other and can deal with pests much better, if they get any at all. Thanks to your channel and your way of explaining things, I really got into gardening. Thank you, Lee 🙂

My husband planted our alliums, and he must have done it right because they're standing tall. We've put in a big selection of them since the squirrels leave them alone. I got tired of feeding the squirrels tulips, then we got tulip 🔥 :( I love alliums. Thanks for the info.

Lol, I just ordered some late last fall. Now I had to listen to see if I did it right. The bulbs arrived a bit late and the ground was freezing. Luckily I found areas that I could still dig-barely. I still had a couple and they will just have to keep the glad bulbs company until then. I usually like to put bonemeal down, but not enough time so I’ll give them a pinch this spring. Can’t wait to see them. They might not be in all the right places because of frozen ground, but they are in. Thanks for instructions, I think they’ll be ok.

Great tips Lee as ever a wicked guide! Have you tried the red mohican allium? Gives a lush blast of colour abit like the drumstick variety,my faves are schubertii&christophii,they're like fireworks exploding mid border,got to admit though,any allium is a favourite of mine,your bees are certainly gonna get spoilt for choice.

Thanks Lee. How far apart should they be if planting beside each other please?
@Gardenninja

Hi Samantha. Aim to plant them around 2inches apart. This makes them look naturally clumped rather than in a row or dotted around. You can read more here! www.gardenninja.co.uk/how-when-to-plant-allium-bulbs/ 🥷🌿🤘

Hey Joan. I’d add them by the side rather than in the hotel. Just so they don’t cause the hotel structure to rot quickly. Here’s my detailed guide for some more tips! www.gardenninja.co.uk/how-to-make-a-bug-hotel-the-right-way/ 🥷🌿🤘

Hi Lee, another great video. Quick question, I have lots of problems with growing any bulbs, not just Alliums, the pesky squirrels dig them up all the time, sometime they eat them, sometimes they just dig them up for fun! I have thought about putting chicken wire over the bulbs but that's a big task if I'm planting 100's of bulbs across the borders. Have you got any other tips to keep the squirrels away? Thanks Jini

Squirrels are a real pain in my garden, too . But they leave the alliums alone. I wonder if planting alliums among the tulips might help.
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Janette. Very good question indeed! The squirrels tend to leave my alliums alone but love tulips and daffs for some reason. One trick I’ve used is to save your rose prunings or thorny bush clippings. It’s a bit of a pain but lay them over where the bulbs are. Then come April lift and recycle them. It usually keeps the squirrels off during the winter and spring. Hope that helps! 🌿🥷🤘

I've heard pro gardeners on bbc podcasts say they add cayenne pepper to the planting hole, and top dress with a sprinkle too. Apparently the smell really deters critters. I have no problems with this, as I have a large male cat, and female around the garden. The smell of the cats keeps them out also, but they are prone to tearing my young trees and shrubs to bits. 😆

@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Cara. Sorry to hear that. You know sometimes bulbs just need a year off. Especially if they’re low on energy reserves. Give them a liquid tomato feed and leave the leaves to shrivel up and die back fully. That should sort them out! 🥷🌿🤘

Do aliums take longer to grow from seed, also something is eating my young aubritia plants I have put in thr the gaps in the stone wall, no sign of any insects. Can you help.
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 11 ай бұрын
Yes they do take a lot longer from seed. When you think the seed has to germinate and then create a bulb from scratch it's quite laborious. Hmm the best way to find out is to try and catch one of the insects mid nibble then use my forum to upload a pic and we can troubleshoot for you! www.gardenninja.co.uk/forum/ 🥷🌿

Can you grow alliums in partial sun?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Strata. You can but the flowering potential reduces significantly. They are a full sun plant after all. Always try and choose the best plant for the conditions you have. Alliums grow well in pots which you can move into the sunniest position so that may be an idea? 🥷🌿👌

A good way to tell is if the leaves on your trees have started to fall. If so. Then you can plant bulbs as long as the grounds still soft to work with! Happy planting. Lee 🥷🌿🤘
