I’ve planted hundreds of allium bulbs in my gardens. Different colors,different sizes.

Hi new to your channel and first time planting bulbs. It’s end of January & I’m late from all I’ve reas but recently found another gardener that said it’s not too late. My bulbs are growing in the bags they came in so planting them today. I see you plant them in smaller pots, is this how you start them and then plant them on the grown once older?

Hello and welcome to my channel! It’s not too late for you to plant these now, it just means they will flower a little later. The fact that they are growing in the bag is a good sign of healthy bulbs and desperate to grow on. Use good compost and give thoroughly water them. They will grow in no time. Yes I start my bulbs in pots first and once they germinate I plant them out in the borders.

I live in the States, in Virginia, zone 7b, and I think I can leave these outside because we have relatively mild winters, very late freezing, and winter days that are not below freezing. But, can we do this in other, colder zones, leaving the bulbs outside all winter?

Hi Maureen, yes you can. Allium bulbs can tolerate the frost and cold temperatures and will do just fine

@@easy.gardening Thanks for the quick answer. Just put in allium serendipity this year but it was awfully expensive. Bulb planting seems like an answer. I, too, am a fan of the foliage left after blooming. Will definitely try this.

I think it's important to note that in Zone 4 and lower in North America, the bulbs wouldn't survive the freeze/thaw cycle in pots and you'd get a handful of goop next spring instead of flowers. British Fall/Winter Gardening tips aren't effective for North American Gardeners. The freeze/thaw cycle doesn't apply to bulbs dug into the soil at the recommended depth cos the ground doesn't completely freeze like the soil in a pot.

Why do your bulbs so small?

These are the Allium Ping Pong variety and the bulbs are smaller for this type. Other varieties such Allium Gladiator and Globemaster have larger bulbs as they have much bigger flowers

Thank you. I see. I bought bigger allium but some broke into small pieces not sure they work or not … This year my first time planted this, hope can see the blooming in spring 😆
