Nice to see a classic card game being covered. Feels like a nice break from expensive board games.

The Beth Sobel cards are gorgeous, and this was a wonderful choice for how to promote them. But as a long time Cribbage lover (it and Euchre were always the games of choice at Mather family reunions), I have to say this is a really great tutorial. You've covered the game brilliantly, and I'm going to bookmark this video for any time I want to teach the game. Well done!

Yup, that is what I did. Was looking for videos to teach the game as efficiently as possible. There has been times some friends and I were hanging out just chatting. I was in the mood to play cribbage but they didn’t know how to play. *bummer* They agreed to learn. I was trying to explain but I think I was confusing the heck out of them. LOL! Teaching is a gift. Ha ha ha! Apparently I need to brush up on those skills.

Flush rule clarification: all of YOUR hands must be the same suit (for 4 points) with a chance for a 5th point if the cut card matches. Crib flushes must be all 5 cards.

My grandfather arranged contract bridge tournaments in Orlando, FL in the 70's. He taught me how to play cribbage when I was 6. The best card game ever. You can play w/pen & paper, so bring a deck on your next plane trip.

Yes! Cribbage is one of the all-time greats! My wife and I have played together since we met over twenty years ago and continued the tradition of her grandparents of keeping track of wins and losses on the back of the board. Love this one and hope your great explanation will introduce it to many new players. Also wonderful to learn about Beth Sobel’s KS deck. We certainly appreciate her art on Wingspan. Thanks!

There are a variety of fiddly different ways to play cribbage. Some differences with the way I was taught: * If you offer the cut, you're offering the deal. And since the non-dealer counts first, this can be a sneaky way to count (and with any luck win) before the new dealer can count hand and cat. The only cut is immediately before turning the cut card. * When using the board, it's always up the outside and down the inside. If you count in the wrong direction, that's on you. * Once you pick up a peg, you count from the peg remaining in the board. * If you miss counting some of your hand (or pegging points), your opponent can claim the uncounted points. And if you overcount, you are penalized and your opponent gets to peg your overcount. * When counting a hand, you do the full count for the hand, then peg the hand. You don't count individual scoring combinations (too easy to make an error and count. So, for instance, the first counted hand here would have been "15-2, 15-4, pair for 6, and a pair for 8". (There are variations in how you would describe that hand.) I learned the game from US military members, and to my knowledge, this is the standard way the game is played in that community. Not surprisingly, the game is generally played for money, though often for very small stakes (penny a point, nickel a game, and double for a skunk is pretty common).

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Cribbage! I'd love to say that I had a great origin story, like grandparents teaching me or it being a family staple...but I fell for it because I found "Cribbage with Grandpas" app and found it relaxing and interesting at the same time. I love that you guys love Cribbage too!

BTW, if you ever wanted to do a Mahjong tutorial, I would be all over it. I thought it was just a tile matching game (like all the digital app versions) but then the game play scene in Crazy Rich Asians made it clear the actual game is something else.

In short: it's four-handed gin rummy, with multiple suits and you can only go out on a gin. Also the scoring is...complex, as it's made for ongoing (or neverending!) tallies of games.

I had serious doubts that you could pull this off properly in under 10 minutes, but you did! 😁 Even though I love the game, I play just seldom enough to largely forget most of the rules between games and always need to review. Not only is this a good succinct refresher, but I especially like how you broke down tackling adding up the cards by 15s then pairs etc. People I know who are more proficient at the game than I am, often rattle them all off really fast back-to-back.. I just realized keeping track of the sums is what has thrown me off as much as anything, much easier to mark off each one as you go. Thanks for this video! Also thanks for introducing me to these cards, I'm going to go look into them right now!

I grew up playing cribbage, learned at a pretty young age. I was looking up how to vids to get pointers on how to teach the game. I have taught some people how to play but think I was getting too technical too quickly. Luckily one person learning seemed to be a natural and caught on quickly. Unless he was lying and knew how to play already. LOL!

I'm sure it has already been pointed to by now, but your flush rules are incorrect. You first check your four card hand for a four point flush (i.e. all cards in your hand MUST be the same suit)... if the cut card is also of the same suit, you bump your flush up to a five point flush.

Very happy to have found this video. My dad played cribbage a lot and I’ve never learned but want to try and play with him now. Do the pairs during round only score if they are played consecutive or could we play 2, 8, 2 and score a pair? Do they only count if they are in the same hand of that round?

Also, how do you tell what are good cards to “throw away” at the beginning? It seems like if you knew the starting card ahead of time you’d have a better idea. I guess don’t throw away a pair or something that adds up to 15?
@blanetalk
@blanetalk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Don't toss a 7 & 8, 9 & 6 or jack & 5. Don't throw consecutive cards that might lead to a run, like 3 & 4. I try throw something like a 7 & 2. Or you can toss a 10 & King, but that can backfire if your opponent does the unexpected and buries a 5. It's a guessing game, but you get better at it with experience and by learning your opponent's patterns of behavior.

Cribbage is an amazing game, glad to see it getting promoted. The video says this is a "paid promotion". In the interests of full disclosure, how much do you get paid for doing a video like this?
@BeforeYouPlay
@BeforeYouPlay 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, it was fun getting to learn Cribbage! What a classic game. To answer your question - actually, "full disclosure" only requires that people specify whether or not content is paid for. We don't release this information publicly because it is an agreed upon fee directly with the publisher/designer dependent on a few factors including weight of the game, type of video, complexity of rules, etc. Thanks!

Yeah we felt the same way about the scoring too! It actually took us a minute to fully grasp how to play (we did not know how to play prior to this project lol). We practiced by playing on Board Game Arena.

Lovely art but man it is very difficult to see what suite type it is. The green looks like the grey and I am not sure why diamonds and hearts have different colors but spades and clubs are simply black? Especially for cribbage I think these cards wouldn’t work well for me
