@ Louis Rossmann So basically you can convert a regular 19V power supply (let's say a Meanwell or something). Replace the standard cord and connector by a Apple connector and you just got yourself a very cheap adapter for your Mac? For the pros/more advanced people here, you could probably add some extra circuitry to make sure it never overloads (although, in my experience this is normally already implemented) and drop de voltage a 0.5-1V (mostly a diode would do just fine lol)

You can see all that data (and more) from iStat Menus. I've had few macbooks in heavy use and I haven't blown a single charger. The lead gets broken after few years, yes. That's because of mechanical wear but I think that's totally normal thinking how much bending those takes in years.

The old MacBook car chargers are hard to find and the ones you can find seem to have bad reviews. I just want to be able to run my laptop off of straight 12v and I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about doing it. Some of the 12v adapters that switch a MagSafe to usbc people reported they were over heating, as that’s what I was going to do before I read that. Thanks for any help!

Can I make a 12 volt car charger with a cigarette lighter adaptor and a MagSafe 1 85 watt cord to charge my 17” MBP in my truck. The brick is basically a transformer that coverts 120 v AC to 12 v DC Thanks
@johncoops68974 жыл бұрын
You can make an adaptor however you need to step up the voltage from 12V to 18.5V. This needs to be a reasonable quality "Step Up Converter" or "Boost Converter" that has decent filtering so there's not tons of high frequency noise on the DC output. There are many types of Macbooks, so your may have Magsafe or it may have USB Type-C. If it's USB Tupe-C, you can probably buy something off the shelf to use in the car. Your first step is to work out the connection, the voltage and the current required. God knows what you mean by "bricks" and "120V AC" and "12V DC" - didn't you say you wanted to use it in the truck at 12V?
@rafextreme28794 жыл бұрын
@@johncoops6897 hes probably talking about a converter/inverter type of brick. Switching 12v dc to 120v ac
@johncoops68974 жыл бұрын
@@rafextreme2879 - perhaps, but that's not what they said. Anyway, it's silly to use an inverter to convert 12V DC from the truck to 120V AC, then use a power supply to convert 120V AC to 18.5V DC for the Macbook. It's far easier (and infinitely more reliable) to convert the 12V DC into 18.5V DC.
@rafextreme28794 жыл бұрын
@@johncoops6897 but aside from an inverter what else is there to convert those. 12v to 18v without having to make anything that a person not 100% skilled in that field can do. I mean the inverter sounds like the easier approach.
@johncoops68974 жыл бұрын
@@rafextreme2879 - The product required is called a "Boost Converter". The OP wants to end up with an 85W charging capacity, so let's add some "headroom" and double that to 170W, to decide the minimum power needed. OK, here's an Ebay search link for hundreds of typical products. If you pay more than US$8 to $10 you are doing it wrong.... www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=%28boost%2C%22step+up%22%29+converter+%2810A%2C200W%29

Hi great vid can you tell me if i can make a lead like this to power and charge a macbook air at 12v from a car ??
@harryhall40014 жыл бұрын
Macbook airs run on 14.85V (or atleast mine does) so you would need something like a boost coverter to increase the voltage. Another issue is that car power is often fluctuates and is noisy due to the electrical components in a car such as the altenator, this is especially bad when starting the car. You would need something to filter the power coming from the car.
